Fujitsu LifeBook U2010  (Source: Fujitsu)
Tiny U2010 weighs 610g and uses 5.6-inch LCD

Fujitsu announced its latest ultra mobile PC (UMPC) called the LifeBook U2010. The U2010 is the follow-up to Fujitsu's LifeBook U1010, and features the 3-in-1 tablet/notebook/handheld PC form factor.

Fujitsu has added an interesting feature to the U2010 that allows the small notebook to wirelessly connect to any FM radio at home or in the car and playback the stored digital music library. The LifeBook U2010 utilizes a 5.6-inch WXGA 1280 x 800 screen with a brightness of 300 nits.

The screen utilizes what Fujitsu calls a Raku Raku zoom button for enlarged viewing on the small 5.6-inch screen. The U2010 comes in multiple colors including Ocean Black, Pink Gold, Cool Silver, Fuchsia Red, and Luminous Blue.

The tiny notebook weighs 610 grams and uses a portable, full-featured Windows Operating system according to Fujitsu. Fujitsu also includes Microsoft Origami Experience 2.0 or fast touch access to multimedia programs. Battery life for the tiny notebook is quoted at 8 hours. Storage for the U2010 is up to a 60GB hard drive or a 64GB SSD. The SSD is optional even though one Fujitsu executive doesn't believe in the SSD. Other features include Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth 2.1.

The base of the U2010 is covered in slip resistant material to help prevent the small computer from slipping out of a user’s hands. The CPU used is the Intel Centrino Atom Z530 running at 1.6GHz and the U2010 takes advantage of the Intel System Controller Hub for low power usage. Security features of the notebook include a 2-level BIOS lock, fingerprint scanner, and an anti-theft slot.

They seem to be targeting either the female crowd or those confident in their masculinity with their new coloring. :)

Pink/Fuschia laptops FTW!

The charcoal one on the right doesn't seem that bad.

No man is in touch with his masculinity THAT much. There is no comfort level involving that pink laptop.

I wouldn't mind using it. Of course I think the black looks much sleeker.

I'd just get the cheapest one possible and paint it to match my car... brilliant black!

The black and pink one looks ok but that dusty rose one... Aimed at old ladies?

I wouldn't mind any color as long as the goods inside are up to snuff.

You would have to be pretty confident to begin with to be seen in public with a 5.5" screen notebook.

More specifically the pre-teen market. My wife wouldn't be seen dead with a pink laptop.

My wife has a pink laptop. So don't jump to conclusions based on one sample point.

I'm just glad that they're offering "Flesh" as a color option.

WXGA Screen on a 5.6"!!!
By Phlargo on 8/11/2008 2:05:14 PM , Rating: 4
Wow.. I can't believe it 1280 x 800 on a 5.6" - now that's high res. I wonder if the pixels are even visible.

My work notebook is a 15" with 1680 x 1050 and it's got a pretty amazing pixel pitch. I have a 12" notebook at home with the same res as this guy and, while the pixels are a little sizey, I can't imagine them being like 1/4 the size!

That would be a wonderful platform for showing pictures of a trip to a large group - easy to pass around and super clear pixel resolution. Sign me up!

Though, really, a big screen and media center works easier for a big group... it can be nice to pass things around in the old paper photo style.

Actually, I'm thinking the "cell-phone sized projector" is going to be the ideal way to show pictures to a group, and I'm sure that in a few years, some netbooks/notebooks/etc will have them built in.

http://www.gizmag.com/3m-announce-micro-projector-... and many others if you just google around.

Problem is being able to read something on that screen unless you use large fonts.

High dpi is great, the bad thing about it is that no operating system seems to be "DPI aware" and resize text accordingly.

With my not so perfect vision, even your 1680x1050 in 15" would be enough for me to have my eyes almost glued to the screen :D

I would love 1920x1200 on a 13.3" LED display.

I must say I envy your eyes.

1920x1200 on my 24" LCD is small enough a dot pitch for me.

I wear glasses though, but I don't see it to be a problem for a laptop as its usually only about 6-12 inches away. I use to have to work excel sheet with size 5-9 font for a 1280x800 resolution 12" LCD. So I don't think 1920x1200 with Vista size fonts would be a problem.

Another 3D paper weight

Low power!!!! Fair processor!!!! Light weight!!!!

No 3D capability whatsoever.......

So when I'm waiting for a plane, train, or bus......

When will there be, at least something, some measure of 3D power on a light wieght machine......

Well if you'd like 17 minutes of battery life, I'm sure there is something out there for you.

But for us obviously not insane people, this is a good looking laptop.

It's using Paulsbo, which incorporates a 3D graphics engine based upon PowerVR SGX (which Intel call GMA500) and video decode acceleration. It won't play Crysis ... it won't play Quake4 probably, but it'll be fine for desktop 3D acceleration and effects.

Been there done that. Had the U1010 with Vista, and it took 3 minutes to boot up.....

The only good thing about it was that it had an inbuilt 3G module, and made a good docking station for Syncing, Jailbreaking & Unlocking iPhones on the go.

I preferred my Toshiba U105

Nice, but at what price?
By thornburg on 8/11/2008 1:48:56 PM , Rating: 2
Wow, this thing sounds amazing... but how much will it cost?

That is a pretty small screen, too, but if it can act as a tablet, I don't mind. Heck, if it has a keyboard, they should scrap this plan and make it like a DS, using the 2nd touchscreen as a keyboard when it is in "notebook" mode.

I read $1300, hahaha, they must be joking
