Fujitsu's FMV-T8140 Tablet PC can be selected with Windows XP or Windows Vista

Fujitsu today announced a new 12.1" Tablet PC for the Japanese market. The Santa Rosa-based FMV-T8140 gives users the choice of Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 or Windows Vista Business.

The FMV-T8140 is powered by a 1.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo U7500 processor and comes standard with 1GB of DDR2 memory (512MB on the Windows XP model). The 12.1" screen features a screen resolution of 1200x800 and is powered by Intel's GMA X3100 integrated GPU.

A 30GB HDD is standard on the FMV-T8140, while an 80GB HDD is on the options sheet. Also optional are 16GB and 32GB solid state disks (SSDs).

The FMV-T8140 measures 11.69" x 8.62" x 1.3" and weighs 3.28 pounds. Fujitsu claims that the tablet can operate for 6.8 hours with the standard battery pack and 10.2 hours when using the extended battery (7.5 hours and 11.3 hours respectively with Windows XP).

The FMV-T8140 will be priced in Japan at 265,000 Yen ($2138 USD) for the Windows Vista model and 245,000 Yen ($1976 USD) for the Windows XP model.

Am i the only one who feels like i would be getting a gimped machine for that price?
dual core 1.06 ghz, 1 gb ddr2 memory, 12.1 inch screen. 1200x800 res and 30 gb hard drive, all for the low low price of what? 2 large. It does have the tablet thing going on, but i still don't think it commands a 2k price tag. i dunno, maybe i missed something.

i think the slim design is where the cost comes into play. probably a lot of R&D went into making something with decent performance, good battery life, and excellent portability. most likely the people buying these are business professionals who don't need all the power and have the money.

The 1.06GHz processor is a pricey component, and all 12.1" systems cost a bit more. A Lenovo X style tablet runs over $1,800, but it has a faster processor and shorter battery life.

I would love to have one of these with 1GB ram on the XP system. 11 hours of battery is sweet on 12.1", and an SSD would be icing on the cake.

A friend recently bought a Avertec 12.1" with an AMD dual core for around $800. It weighs 4 pounds, but that is a significant price difference.

In case you hadn't noticed, small light computers always cost a lot more than a mid-sized heavy Dell type computer, even though the specs appear to be inferior. Likewise, a small Canon digital camera costs around twice the comparable big heavy Kodak digital camera. You pay a premium for extra small.

The key word here is "light". Go to Newegg and look for a 3-3.9lb tablet. The cheapest is a $1650 Lenovo with 1024x768 resolution, while the cheapest with 1200x800 is a $2400 Toshiba. Even for a mere laptop the cheapest name brand 3-3.9lb laptop is a $1300 Gateway with only a 1Ghz Core Solo, 1GB RAM, 12.1" screen, 1200x800 resolution, 40GB drive.

They are targeted for different uses.

I'd love to get my hands on a 10" subnotebook, but can't afford them.
For example, you'd feel uncomfortable by using a 14" - 15" notebook in a bus or car trip, but a 10" one, you can use it almost everywhere and doesn't require you to use a special bag if you don't want to. Just your regular bag with all your regular stuff plus the notebook can be allright, which is not something attainable with a regular sized notebook.

Wish there were less powerful notebooks this size, so you could fully replace a PDA and do much more, but not paying so much money.
I'm just waiting for the ASUS EEE to appear and see what it's really worth.
