"iPhone Dev Team" releases iUnlock software

Only a day after the release of the iPhoneSimfree software to retailers, the enterprising "iPhone Dev Team" has managed to reproduce the functionality for a much more appealing price: free.

Twelve dedicated coders, known only as Daeken, Darkmen, guest184, gray, iZsh, Nightwatch, pytey, roxfan, Sam, uns, Zappaz, and Zf, have managed to decipher the unlocking codes for the iPhone and are making their software available to the world for download -- and at the miniscule size of 6,458 bytes.

While a direct link cannot be provided to the unlocking software, it has been tested and confirmed working. It remains to be seen if updating the iPhone will disrupt the functionality, but testing will continue and updates will be provided as events warrant.

Even with the small size of the unlock code, websites hosting the file or discussion of the procedure, such as, are being brought to a crawl by hordes of visitors. With the recent $200 price cut to the 8GB model and newfound freedom from AT&T, iPhone orders may rise sharply in the next few hours alone.

In related news, an area man was taken by ambulance from a local Starbucks and rushed to the emergency room after reportedly attempting suicide by caffeine overdose. Witnesses claim the frequent starbucks customer had been complaining on a nightly basis about how Steve Jobs had betrayed him and other early iPhone adopters for dropping the price so rapidly after release. Upon learning of the free unlocking software, the man started to scream about how he had spent an "arm and a leg" on similar software just the day before. Witnesses say he then began consuming "an exorbitant" amount of espresso shots, chasing each with an iced latte until he began to shake and convulse.

Early reports indicate that he will make a full recovery.

As an avid Apple fan, I resent your over-the-top satire of fellow Apple fans!

(Mostly, for making me seize into hysterical laughter.)

Sounds like another man I heard about...

This guy was parking his newly bought Porsche on road side, when a out-of-control dump truck almost crashed into it. Luckily it didn't crash fully into car, but ripped of most of the driver's side. A policeman near to sight rushed to the man in Porsche, and this guys starts screaming and complaining how it ruined his new car and no matter how hard garage guys work its never gonna be the same and blah blah.

The cop said, "holy god, you're so materialistic.. you can't see things more important to you than your damaged car. you're so worried about your car that you can't notice your own left arm is ripped in the accident?"

Realizing this he screams, "OH MY GOD.............. my rolex"!!

sorry, but your starbucks story just reminds me this.

In later news; evidently patrons assisting the paramedics help him into the ambulance noted the desperate irony in the Manager's public announcement that followed seconds after his departure...

"In celebration of the new Starbucks/Apple partnership I am thrilled to be able to offer FREE coffee for the entire rest of the day to all iPod or iPhone owners - just bring up your iPod/iPhone and the java is on us!

It's thought that none of the other regulars is ever likely to tell him...

I totally predicted this on the thread about iPhoneSimfree's overly expensive fix. In fact, I'll quote myself:
That's ridiculous. A little patience and it'll be available for free.

Exactly. My friend was gonna pay $100 for that crap yesterday when I convinced him not to. He should PAY ME for saving him $100.

Glad its been hacked for free. I think AT&T sucks in San Jose. Does anyone know if you can use an unlocked iPhone on Verizon? I don't know if it is a GSM network.

Verizon is not GSM, so no.

If I pick up a virgin iPhone from the Apple store is there a procedure to get it activated and then unlocked or do you simply hook the iPhone to iTunes and run the app?
Basically do I need to sign up with ATT before getting it on T-Mobile's network?

If you have enough money to buy an iPhone for the hell of it, then you have enough money for an AT&T contract.

I'd sooner remove my right nut then use Crapular EVER again.

My right nut can go anytime.

It's my left nut that I'm worried about.

You do not have to activate with AT&T. Just search google for "iPhone Dev Team" ... you can't miss it.

It takes more than "running an app." Intructions are clear, but knowledge / familiarity with SSH, linux command-lines and file structre are handy. I am sure someone is compiling it all in a single app though.

Oh, just so you know, no You Tube or Visual Voice mail ... AT&T is required for those!

All this being equal, I can fathom doing this if you cuurently are a TMobile subscriber locked into a contract.

If you are not, and don't travel overseas, just go with AT&T.

I am posting this message from my unlocked iPhone Using TMobile!

It was easy as pie. For now I am using my work SIM, and will probably switch to AT&Twhen I need to get a plan for myself. But it is great to be able to have this option.

Great. I am a Cingular customer and a happy one.

BTW, who in their right mind would buy a "smart" phone that doesn't even support MMS or half the other features found in today's 'free with contract' phones?

I have been a tmobile customer for 5 years until I got my DASH from work, which is also TMobile. Most of my friends are on TMobile as well, so, for now it is nice to still have the free mobile to mobile option.

I looked and AT&T's rates are very comparable, at this time. Maybe not many minutes, but they INLCUDE mobile to mobile while TMobile doesn't, and I like the Unity option as I still have a land line.

As far as MMS... yeah I know. There are a few items about this phone that may me go, Hmmmm. I can only hope they are fixed / added in updates. I am more miffed about Exchagne Active Sync and Cisco LEAP support.

Hey, but I got the phone for $250, so I can't really complain. (had a $150 apple card for opening up a checking acount)

No whining

No whining if you paid $100 for iPhoneSIMFree's solution like you people did when Apple dropped the price of the iPhone $200. We WARNED you this time!!

Do you think that ATT is waiting for many people to buy the iPhone knowing they can unlock and use on other wireless networks, then sue apple into making them lock the phone back up, causing some of those people to switch to ATT?
