Official sales numbers are not in at this time

Hardcore gamers tend to buy video games no matter how the economy is. Video games have continued to be robust despite the economic downturn over the last year as people look for ways to spend on entertainment that offer more value.

Certainly one of the biggest games to be released this year will be Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 . The game is widely expected by analyst to be a huge money maker for Activision. Some analysts predict that the game will make up a significant portion of Activision's profits for Q4 2009.

The game officially went on sale at 12 am this morning and many locations reported small lines of hardcore gamers waiting at the doors of stores to get their hands on the game. About 10,000 GameStop and Best Buy locations around the world opened at midnight to sell the game.

One GameStop location at Union Square in New York City had a line of about 80 mostly young people lined up about two hours before the store opened.

One person waiting in the line said, "This is the only game I'm probably going to do this for." The young woman planned to play the game all night online against a friend.

An employee at the Union Square GameStop said, "Gamers are enthusiastic about picking this stuff up at midnight."

Sales of the game are expected to top 11 to 13 million units by the end of 2009. One San Francisco Best Buy store had about ten people lined up at 10pm Monday night to buy the game. One man waiting in the line said, "I'm going to be up all night playing it, until I crash."

Modern Warfare 2 has a long way to go to beat the top game from last year -- GTA IV. The game sold 3.6 million units on its first day and 6 million in its first week totaling more than $500 million in sales.

No dedicated server support is so pre-1996. QuakeWorld changed everything in that year. Who remembers gaming online before that? I do. It sucked, hard. Peer-to-peer was horrible and required you to lag shoot and imagine where people would be. Not only that, but if ONE person with a bad connection joined the p2p network, everyone suffered horribly.

QuakeWorld changed all of that. Sure, it took about 5 years for the majority of people to begin getting highspeed connections, that and Valve to release the much heralded Half-Life networking code patch that allowed lookbacks in server-time giving dialup users a tremendous boost in aiming ability--but, it was a heck of a lot better even to begin with than peer-to-peer.

It still IS a heck of a lot better. Dedicated servers run by the community (not a publishing house) are _the_ best way to have multiplayer gaming, period.

These tools at Infinity Ward need to suffer for their callous disregard for modern technology and their blind insistence in going back to the days of old. Boycotting COD:MW 2 is the only route us PC gamers can take.

Just the other day even John Carmack alluded to no dedicated servers in Rage. How hard is it to re-use dedicated code to plug into new games? It can't be _that_ hard. It is worth it if the experience is that much better.

picked up the 360 version at Best Buy, don't care about mods, just want to get online have a good time & play the single player. I like the other COD games on the consoles, & since I am not a PC gamer, don't like gaming with KB/mouse, the console version is fine, as my tastes go.

I gamefly'd the PS3 version just to see how it compares to the 360, but the game should be fabulous no matter which version you buy. This is my last game purchase of 2009, & if WOW or MW1 is any indication, I expect this one to be fantastic.

IMO, shooters are better on the consoles now that they are in HD. I really like the controller much better, its a bigger screen, no or limited cheating, someone else can use the computer, you are not upgrading hardware every year, etc. But that is just my opinion.

Probably because IW neutered the PC version.

"We thought the lack of dedicated servers was bad, but now we can add the lack of console commands, the inability to have a say in who hosts the game, a lengthy pause while the game migrates to a new host if the currently selected host quits, no leaning, no option to record matches, and no way to kick or block trouble players, hackers, or cheaters."

I hope most people buying the game realise what they're getting themselves into. I haven't ordered it, but I surely don't like to see such a crappy port rewarded with good sales just because of a franchise name. I somehow doubt many sales come with a money-back guarantee or anything like that.

At least the PC online FPS gamer. I am sure that Halo noobs will pick this game up in a heartbeat.

It's a shame as even with DX9 graphics the game looks good. But even Infinity Ward should realize that graphics don't make the game. The features of multiplayer do.

I actually picked it up just a bit ago while on lunch, I did read the reviews beforehand...but I'm not a hard core multiplayer FPS player anymore so what I read of the multiplayer in this game is fine to me....

I don't care about no modding
I don't care about DX9 only
I don't care about no dedicated servers (though of the 3 that would be my first 'wish' for the PC version to have)

I'll live....I'm going to toss the game off to my nephew when I'm done with it -- so I won't feel as bad dropping the coin on it (at least I know more than just me will be entertained by the purchase).

I really got the game because I'm a avid CoD fan -- have them all except World at War and I'll play multiplayer or Spec OP mode with my brother...that's all the value I need.

In the meantime I too will be using AC-130 gunships on COD4, seeing how it was something that IW stole from a mere COD4 mod called X4, in addition to Capture the Flag mode. Enjoy gunships and CTF on small 6vs6 matches. I will do it on COD4 on 25vs25 matches. Not to mention the mod also has nukes and napalm. Who will IW steal their ideas from for their next game now that they removed modding? bwahahahaha

Everything is so intense, pure gun porn, & I think the devs did a fantastic job with it. also got online last night & had a blast with that. I read it did 1.2mill in 24 hours which was double of what GTA IV did & maybe some record or something. I checked with some of my PC only gamer friends & they say they are boycotting cause of the dedicated server issue. Well, more power to you, cause the game has exceeded my expectations & easily my GOTY.

COD: MW2 Petition

The launch day has arived and the world wide petition is only at 197,150 people. Thats a nice chunk of change at $50-$60 a pop but I do not think it will be enough to sway IW. We as a community of gamers has failed due to the post above where the guy never heard why we are against MW2.

This is the day online PC gaming changed. After this all other releases, for any developer, can go this route because there is not a big enough financial reason not too. Only 200,000 less copies to not have the overhead of servers, utilities, maintence, IT staff, etc. Seems like a no brainer. FAIL

RE: COD: MW2 Petition
By Iaiken on 11/10/2009 1:19:57 PM , Rating: 2
Apparently you don't know who hosts the majority of dedicated servers...

Clans... individuals... NOT THE DEVELOPER.

The only thing that the developer needs to set up is a server tracker so that clients can find servers.

Last time I played MW1, there were 36,000 dedicated servers... of them 19,000 had a game going on in them (which means at least 2 people and at most 100).

Nice try, but there really isn't any overhead in the dedicated server realm as the developer just writes them.

So IW has essentially denied hosting companies the revenue they were receiving for the potential 40k+ dedicated severs they would have hosted at an average of $12-$200 a month (depending on the amount of throughput).

That's millions of dollars in lost revenue every year for several years that hardcore gamers will not be pumping into the economy as they support their habit.

Next time have a clue.

They are just disappointed. Modern Warfare was in the top 3 games I ever played. And what I think had the best online experience ever. So its a big let down when Infinity Ward neuters the PC version of the sequel out of what seems like pure laziness.

Sure it is just a video game, but it seems like a few simple things could have made the PC version a lot better than it will turn out to be.

And what I think had the best online experience ever.

I wouldn't exactly call it the best online experience. There's nothing wrong with the netcode but it has it's bugs. I seriously hate the bunny hop around the corner garbage that people do.

There also aren't very many default mode servers out there. Most of them (99%) are all HC. I have no problem playing that but it's painfully easy for me to slaughter people in that mode. I typically end up with a 3:1 KD ratio most of the time.

By j33pownr on 11/10/2009 2:09:36 PM , Rating: 2
It does show my n00bness from only thinking from the game sales side, but by your own admission the majority of the server revenue is going to hosting companies and not IW. I was just pointing out that there should have been more support from the gaming community (players and hosting companies) to actually get some compromise in features instead of what is happening.

Gamers will always continue to pump money into their computers so they can run the latest games. It just unfortunately will not be our beloved COD franchise.

Not be enough? If these 197,350 people do not buy the game (as they should not since they signed the petition) then that's a $11.8 million loss in sales. They might sell a lot for the consoles but they pay licensing fees to Sony and Microsoft for those. The PC version is nothing but net gain so that is a loss of $11.8 million cash.

I'm sure those that weren't in the loop and purchased the game for the PC will end up disappointed and start raging on the IW forums. So it's a loss of money and having to answer to pissed off customers. Bad idea on their parts.

RE: COD: MW2 Petition
By j33pownr on 11/10/2009 2:48:52 PM , Rating: 2
I say not enough because the 200000 is less than 2% of the total projected for 2009 only. If they added in all the things COD4 had, who knows, they might have missed the biggest sales season of the year. It just seems rushed to market with half the offerings of the previous version.

I do agree its a bad move pissing off customers no matter how big/small the percentage.

RE: COD: MW2 Petition
By jonmcc33 on 11/10/2009 3:46:42 PM , Rating: 2
These 200,000 are the ones that are the hardcore gamers that play the game from the start and years later. Not a good minority to lose a sale to.

I played the snot out of the original Call of Duty. I didn't go for Call of Duty 2 because I am done with WWII shooters. Just like I didn't go for Call of Duty: World at War.

But this is bad overall for Infinity Ward as the competition for modern warfare shooters is quite strong. Hopefully Ubisoft releases something good soon.

With the exception of console specific exclusives, I only play FPSes on my PC, period. There's no way I'm going to support the bastardization that the PC version of MW2 has become. Sometimes my friends fail to connect to host when joining a game. Which isnt a big deal becuase it literally takes 5seconds to join a new game with your friend.

If dedicated servers are such a big deal to all these people flaming nonstop for weeks then stick to mw1. All this whining is rather tiring now.

The big deal is more related to clans who play competitively against others, and not so much the casuals who just play for a few hours, which is sad to say, the majority. Most people who post here or online aren't the majority casuals, they are the small group of tech savvy people or competitive players. I still think its a bad move, but I believe someone will find a hack around it or they will eventually patch it in.

That was probably the last true innovation in multiplayer gaming that I have ever seen. Sure BF2 is big, but it's almost too big. COD:UO had the large maps, 25 v 25 servers, land vehicles (Jeeps and Tanks) and probably the best multiplayer game mode invented... Base Assault.

This expansion pack to Call of Duty was made by Gray Matter [Treyarch] while IW was making Call of Duty 2 for the consoles, and that's when COD started going downhill. I sure hope that Bad Conpany 2 brings elements of UO back and that Medal of Honor can regain momentum... Time will tell, but I am losing faith.

By they way, kids who prefer FPS's on the console have never played on the PC and do not have a clue as to the quick response a mouse has in regard to reaction time... Or the benefit of going to the same server, where you kind of get used to the way regulars play. (I am not a clan member, I just pick servers I enjoy playing on with regulars). Or running up to a doorway and leaning around to scope out the next room, which gives you a more tactical approach as opposed to run and gun style. And the most important feature, IMO, CUSTOM MAPS! (Which were essentially destroyed in COD 4 due to not being able to play them on ranked servers, (Thanks IW)... If you haven't a clue of what I am talking about, google "The Rock Custom Map COD 4." GOOD TIMES!

It's not the idea that there's abandonment or disregard. Now that's taking it to the extreme. Look at the actual consequence of this: people will choose not to buy this game (what do you think they were going to do? Of course many pc gamers aren't going to buy it. You even having to say it will make you sound idiotic). The over-reaching consequence is that this is another step on the slippery slope to the death of PC gaming.

People will not buy the PC version. I.W. will chalk it up to piracy or lack of interest in the PC market. They will excuse themselves from releasing a PC version of COD4. They will assist in creating a new mentality that moves all gaming to consoles, where profit margins are bigger because of more sales and less development cost. PC gaming will be dead.

You may not think it's a big deal, but that's because you lack peripheral vision. Make some room for love? Take some of your own medicine, please.

"They will excuse themselves from releasing a PC version of COD4." ???

- I thought there was already a PC version of COD4?

"They will assist in creating a new mentality that moves all gaming to consoles"

- If them not supporting dedicated servers is assistance, it was only the rope given to all of the people that signed that petition.

"slippery slope"

- I like that one :D

"PC gaming will be dead?" - A little extreme eh?

- You're really off your rocker - World of Warcraft is going to keep PC gaming around -

Now if you're talking about FPS - They are dying a little i'm sure -

"Make some room for love? Take some of your own medicine, please." ???

---- Why thank you very much for taking something rhetorical, and making it your very own just to snub someone. Original. Hats off to your with you exceptional fichus peripheral vision.

"It's not the idea that there's abandonment or disregard."

- You are very wrong. Did the developers not "disregard" the people that aren't happy about this? Why yes. Yes they did.

The truth is.

I agree with a lot of the things people are saying about this.

I guess I got away from my point. If I didn’t have the Xbox version - I would be upset about the PC issue too. But - I decided to not buy the PC version anyway. It would have been a lot cheaper for me. I bought a new 360 last week just to play MW2.
I had an Xbox 360 before - But got rid of it because I sell all of my stuff to pay for gas - HAHA - Feel free to rip on me about that if you want - I can explain later.

Oh yeah!
Again my point.

Get over it - Stop posting on articles that aren't covering the PC debate -

Can I call you Larry the Jamaican? It's Red stripe mon!!!

Yes, it's obvious that a company knows exactly what the CONSUMERS want. Heaven forbid that the consumers try to voice their opinion on what they want. They must obviously be wrong because well, the company knows best after all, right?

I think you should have made the second "consumers" uppercase too.

"Yes, it's obvious that a company knows exactly what the CONSUMERS want. Heaven forbid that the CONSUMERS try to voice their opinion on what they want. They must obviously be wrong because well, the company knows best after all, right? " Sooooo much better.

And no. Consumers have no idea what’s good for them. ever.

But really... The consumers aren't really wrong - I just wanted to rant a little with everyone else...

I guess I just wish that the PC gamers had the server support they wanted, and I was trying to move people to a different view point for fun.

Tactic two.

You guys are right. I really do mean this. the server support requested is reasonable. But I don’t see it changing. And it's a great game still. And I hope that some of you will at least still try it out -
