Social network campaign forces clothier to ditch new look.

Social media has proven that there is strength in numbers, after a group of disgruntled social network users forced a retail giant to reverse its decision on a new logo.

The Gap recently decided to revamp their logo.  Last week, the popular clothing company switched out its traditional blue box with tall, white letters for a logo sporting a white box with black letters and a small, blue square positioned in the top, right-hand corner.

An overwhelming number of Facebook and Twitter fans were unhappy about the company's effort to reinvent itself and so; The Gap announced earlier this week, that it was succumbing to public pressure and changing the logo back.

“Since we rolled out an updated version of our logo last week on our website, we’ve seen an outpouring of comments from customers and the online community in support of the iconic blue box logo," said Marka Hansen President of Gap Brand North America in a statement on the website.

The new logo prompted a flurry of negative comments on the net and even a few joke websites.  One website, called Crap Yourself Logo mocked the new Gap logo by letting users create their icons in the style of the now defunct creation.

Hansen indicated that they were attempting to address the feedback they received last week and was trying to find a way to tap into the overwhelming emotional response that the company received.

"Ultimately, we’ve learned just how much energy there is around our brand. All roads were leading us back to the blue box, so we’ve made the decision not to use the new logo on gap.com any further," Hansen said.

Agreed. Why would anybody waste energy hating something as unimportant as a logo? Oh, right, folks on the internet. Where common sense and reason go out the window.

It goes to show you that the consumers really do hold the power over the companies they buy from.

If all consumers, or a vast majority rise up and protest the company will either fail, or comply with the wishes of the people.

Good for GAP (they also own one of my favourite brands) and good for the people voicing their opinion.

Too bad no amount of public attention over the decades can resolve the real problems with Gap.

Sad thing probably more losers care about this then the upcoming elections.

Who cares about your country's future? But oh my, that new Gap logo is terrible. Let's start an internet campain to change it back, all while we remain uninformed about the canidates and let our country go down the toilet.

Oh, and did you hear who the new judges are on American Idol? Can't wait. Lindsy's in trouble again too. Poor girl, but I don't like her new hair cut. What was she thinking. And I can't believe Courney is breaking up with.... <shotgun between the eyes>

Hey, why not increase the ads on TV and radio, since I don't know who to vote for! And they tell the truth don't they??

And lets increase the number of yard signs, because I'll vote for the persons name I see the most of!

Sadly no one cares who elected because they're all crupted -

Take money for votes - leagal or otherwise
Only concerned with keeping their jobs
DON'T vote the why the ones who elected them want to vote

I'd vote again if the lobbing stopped and the ads were only a week or two before the election and they didn't pick on the one they are running against.

In what world would you raise money - hundreds of MILLIONS - and spend it on annoying people with ads all over to get a job that pays less than $200,000?

Didn't Know They Changed It

I had no idea they even changed it.

Though, honestly the new logo looks like an investment firm logo or something.

That is what I was thinking. It looks like an industrial firm of some kind. Or maybe a symbol for a new brand of agriculture supply/seed company. I do agree the original one looks much better.

However, I really don’t care what GAP does, as long as my wife doesn’t make me go into that store I am fine with it.

Just think of the marketing firm...

.... that designed this logo. Talk about egg on your face. Then again I'm sure they got paid handsomly for it so... meh.

Yeah, that logo is incredibly generic. I don't think it looks bad...but geez, it's just a big font with a square behind it. The original is at least somewhat iconic.

Not a surprise
