Find Friends Nearby is now available in iOS and Android's Facebook mobile apps
Facebook has released a new mobile feature for iOS and Android called "Find Friends Nearby," which aims to connect those meeting new people for the first time.
Find Friends Nearby, which was originally called "Friendshake," is a new feature that can be found in Facebook Mobile. It was created for a hackathon project, and now acts as a digital phonebook for Facebook users looking to make new friends.
The new tool works like this: a group of friends and acquaintances go out to a restaurant. Those that do not know one another, yet end up talking and becoming friends throughout the night, can go into their Facebook Mobile apps and use the "Find Friends Nearby" feature to see who is in their vicinity. A list of names will pop up, and they can find the person they're looking to become Facebook friends with in that list.
"I built Find Friends Nearby with another engineer for a hackathon project," said Ryan Patterson, a software engineer at Facebook and the creator of 'Find Friends Nearby.' "While it was originally called ‘Friendshake’, we settled on ‘Find Friends Nearby’ for launch (the URL was a little bit of a homage to the previous iteration).
"For me, the ideal use case for this product is the one where when you’re out with a group of people whom you’ve recently met and want to stay in contact with. Facebook search might be effective, or sharing your vanity addresses or business cards, but this tool provides a really easy way to exchange contact information with multiple people with minimal friction."
Find Friends Nearby came along after Facebook's acquisition of Glancee, which allowed users to find people nearby with similar interests.
Find Friends Nearby is now available in iOS and Android's Facebook mobile apps by selecting menu>find friends>other tools>Find Friends Nearby.
