Facebook integration lacks ability to make status updates

Earlier this week, there were some photos making the rounds with a firmware update for the PS3 adding Facebook integration. It would be easy enough to expect with Facebook coming to the PS3 that you would be able to leave status updates and do the typical and common Facebook tasks via the PS3.

Engadget reports that new details on the update and its release date are available. The bad news is that the Facebook integration is far from the full monty you probably hoped for. The Facebook integration will apparently only allow you to share information about what games you have bought on the PSN and when certain game events happen.

The update will also allow the user to share information on the trophies they have won online. Perhaps real Facebook access and integration will come down the road, until then I bet this feature has lost a lot of its luster in many PS3 owners' eyes. A leak from Sony Poland has pegged the go date for the 3.10 update, which includes the not so great Facebook integration as this Thursday.

You can already access the whole facebook user interface through the web browser installed on every PS3.

I think its eventually going to get to the point where it shows what game your playing at that moment (if you are). For both the 360 and PS3. And your sentiment will again apply. Who cares?

"MMNTech is currently watching 'XXX Oriental Delights IV' on Bluray."

I dread the day.

That sort of happened already when blockbuster tied it's rental site to Facebook back in the day. I remember one of my friends renting some trashy movie and laughing. A few days later those types of applications disappeared :)

I think for some this will be pretty cool. Depends on your social circle outside of gaming. Back when I was a big online FPS player, everyone on IRC had the all seeing eye change your nick to reflect what game you were playing automatically. If most of your friends are gamers then something like this could be pretty fun.

I just downloaded and took the 6MB Xbox Live Facebook plugin for a spin this morning. I guess I was expecting a little more integration, but as it stands, it doesn't keep you logged in as you play games. I was hoping that it would update my status with things like "... just got the Zombie Genocidist Achievement!" or something. Sadly, no such luck. I really hope that they expand that level of integration. I'm aware that future games may optionally add support for a feature like this, but... meh.

On the plus side, it is cool to utilize the friend-finding feature. Assuming all your Facebook and Xbox Live friends syncronize their accounts, you can match up Facebook friends to Gamertags or match up Gamertags to Facebook friends. Already, a couple of my distant friends (on Facebook) have syncronized so now I have added them to my Xbox Live Friends list, so we can game together.

It does that on the MSN space. THere's a Xbox app that shows your latest achievements and such. And nothing stops microsoft from adding that functionality. If people ask for it, and it doesn't open you to hacks I'm pretty sure they will add you.

Does it even work yet?

I saw it there the other day while playing COD MW2 and enabled it for trophies and game events but I have yet to see anything show up on my facebook page.

I can see a playstation network application on my facebook now but so far I've seen no automatic postings from playing yet. Maybe this only works with some games?

Another layer added to the PS3 God

The PS3 does everything already so what more could it offer. Integration with other applications that is what. Soon I can have my Facebook account get updated with the fact that I am doing my favorite thing, playing video games. Not only that but other gamers can get updates when they are not playing. People who know nothing of video games will be exposed due to Facebook.

Seriously though lets be honest. Integration is no more ho-hum than Facebook itself is. What good is Facebook or Twitter really? They are time wasters plain and simple. Sure some people really use it to network and other really do enjoy keeping in touch but for the most part it is a very trivial website and idea. Why bash the PS3 for adding it to their tool set. It hurts nothing but adds dimension.
