AMD never intended for a Socket 939 Athlon 64 FX-62 and X2 5000+

Yesterday The Inquirer reported AMD was going to release Athlon 64 FX-62 and Athlon 64 X2 5000+ processors for socket 939. The source for the information was from the AMD processor price page where it listed the two models available for socket AM2 and Socket 939.

However, this is incorrect and it was only a misprint on the AMD website according to our AMD Public Relations representative, Damon Muzny. Muzny wrote to say, "While I was out on Thursday and Friday a number of you good folks noticed that there was a misprint on AMD's website. Specifically, our pricing page incorrectly stated that the X2 5000+ and FX-62 would be available in a 939-pin flavor. That typo has been corrected and the pricing page now should read correctly."

The pricing page has been fixed to reflect the misprint with all traces of a socket 939 Athlon 64 FX-62 and Athlon 64 X2 5000+ removed. AMD announced the AM2 FX-62 and 5000+ early last week as part of the AM2 platform launch. The Google cache of the old page is still available.

A similar incident occurred several weeks ago when the Athlon 64 5000+ for Socket 939 was accidentally released onto the AMD website.

Fudo couldn't buy a clue if he tried. He's always shilling for Nvidia and ATI even when they release problem products. He also loves to hype Asus for some reason despite the fact Asus' quality has taken a huge crap in recent years. I wouldn't put much faith in anything Fudo has to say.

It's also worth noting that AMD Zone reported the typo early today long before anyone else posted a correction.

I disagree...

A lot of you guys read the inq as if it was PC-world magazine that reports on old stuff allready in hand. Thats totaly wrong, The inq is to be compared to future forcast or Business Intelligence firms. What they do with the hints and their network is more or less incredible. Admitidly (sic?) they are wrong from time to time but mostly they are right. And compared to other "experts" that do Business Intelligence and forcasts such as stock exchange or industry analyticians they are extremly accurate. Especially Fudo manages to get moles to report on strange stuff from time to time and it makes for interesting reading if U know what U are looking for and don't accept it as gospel.

I dont have that much cash to burn, so I am building an AM2 system using Semprons and wait for 65nm AM2 parts to debute early next year.

AMD's official AM2 press release had the same errors then. I read the press release and took it as fact that AMD was going to offer the 5000+ and FX-62 in Socket 939. They also had 'Sempron available in Socket AM2 and Socket 939' in there when one had to figure it was a typo which should've read 'Socket AM2 and Socket 754'.

The Inq is a rumor mill, and as far as rumors and gosip go, its fairly accurate.

As far as the 939 story goes, the guy just pointed out what was on AMD website, and I have to agree with him on this, your offical parts page shows parts that don't even exist, kinda sloppy at the very least.

Well, adios 939, it was good knowing you, it will be some time before I welcome AM2 if ever.

Everyone is looking forward to Conroe. Me, too, but I'm not building or buying a complete new system till Vista launches.

I agree, it is what it is. If it wasnt for the Inquirer we would be left with dull stories from something called Daily tech :)

you have to admit that although this is more conservative and carefuly, inquirer is a fun read and gives you some different perspectives, as well as non-usa perspectives.

plus it has a cool click on left picture thing which is always interesting.

on what AMD has up their sleeves to counter (if we could call it that) Conroe. I think it's very, very mean for Anand to end his article with such a statement. He's surely aware that it'd cause a stir. Now we're wasting our time guessing (which often times develops to flaming) what in the heck it is.

I'm sure there is a way for you guys to give us an idea, without breaking the NDA. I thought Anand's comment was very naive and showed a typical (not necessarily good) journalism.

Not that I'm so much interested in what AMD has, but the forum is getting worked up by that comment and I don't see a great virtue in that.

Just my 2 cents.

NDA's are there for a reason, and, in the hardware game, they tend to be EXTREMELY restrictive. The fact that Anand was allowed to give that much of a hint was a bit of a surprise, to be honest.

The price chart still leaves one question to be answered. Will there be Socket 939 version of Eneregy Efficient X2s? I'm sory if this has been answered elsewhere, but I haven't heard about it yet, and according to the AMD's chart, it's not clear if the EE chips will be out for both (939 and AM2) platform or just for AM2.

I am fairly certian EE are only for AM2. 939 is oddly the most dead platform out there, with nothing planned AFAIK and 754 actually scheduled to be supported longer than it.

Kris noted earlier that Anand was more-than-likely hinting towards Brisbane, which is the 65nm die shrink of current 4200+-5000+ (and FX) AM2's iirc. Those 4400+ Brisbanes will def be something to watch. Just might be able to compete with the E6600's...Maybe.

I personally don't think i'm updating my cpu/mobo until Cadiz...The quad-core 65nm K8L AM3...Which will most likely be the AM3 desktop Opteron. :P Although Conroe is surely a acceptable upgrade from my the now-classic 939 optys...I'm lazy, and that seems to be the next big thing to watch. Well, that or Bloomfields, equavilent Intel CPU coming in the same similar time-frame.

I like the inquirer, I visit it every couple days, you can often get insight and news on whats coming... If you do read it every so often, you are already aware that news, is often mixed with speculation, and jokes. Its not a hardcore news site, nor does it claim to be taken 100% seriously. Take it with a grain of salt

Might be news to some regarding the nature of theinquirer's news, not to me though. Take it for what it is, its pretty obvious if you read it at all and have half a wit in your head. Not that I don't have an axe to grind with one or two of their writers, but they really don't make much effort to come across as more trustworthy than they are. The nature of the site is very much tongue-in-cheek.

I love the last sentence in the inquirer article right below the screen capture. Some of you may have missed it if you don't scroll down.

"AMD is too important to afford itself a typo on its official site but we will try to confirm this officially."

So who has the egg on their face in this case: AMD or theinquirer.net.

I love both AMD and The Inquirer but loyal readers and customers would not be so if we don't keep them on their toes. :)
