Pricewert allegedly hosted child porn and botnets among other illegal activities

Some of the biggest problems with the internet are spam, child porn, and other malicious activities. Many of the illegal activities are carried out by criminal groups that operate on the same servers or within the same ISP.

The FTC has announced that it has closed down one of the most notorious of the rogue ISPs operating in the U.S. called Pricewert LLC. According to the FTC Pricewert LLC does business under several names including 3FN and APS Telecom.

The ISP allegedly actively recruits and colludes with criminals that distribute illegal, malicious, and harmful electronic content. The content distributed on the ISP servers includes spyware, viruses, Trojan horses, and porn.

The FTC wrote in a statement, "The FTC alleges that the defendant advertised its services in the darkest corners of the Internet, including a forum established to facilitate communication between criminals."

Other allegations in the FTC complaint include that the ISP hosted botnets and the bot herder that controlled the botnets. These bot herders are the computers that relay commands to the compromised computers in the botnet.

Court documents in the case include IM transcripts of senior ISP employees talking about how to configure botnets with the bot herders. The court issued a temporary restraining order that required Pricewert's upstream providers to cut their servers off from the Internet and froze Pricewert assets.

The FTC has charged the defendants in the case with, "distribution of illegal, malicious, and harmful content and deployment of botnets that compromised thousands of computers caused substantial consumer injury and was an unfair practice, in violation of federal law."

The preliminary injunction hearing will be held on June 15.

Seriously I thought it was a new term for dirty ISPs or it was the name of an ISP I'd never heard of before.

BTW I've noticed that Jason Mick now has a unix-using buddy fix up his articles (differences in apostrophes), no more preschool spelling errors! :D

If these guys hosted child pornography...

Then jail is too good for them. Every parent in the world should be allowed to beat the crap out of these guys. I'm not a parent and I want to beat the crap out of them.

He's nothing but a low-down, double-dealing, backstabbing, larcenous perverted worm! Hanging's too good for him. Burning's too good for him! He should be torn into little bitsy pieces and buried alive!

How does that work? Wouldnt you be dead if you were torn into little bitsy pieces? You could bury them after but not alive.

This is way better... bury them and put in some of the worst ants in the world in there with them but completely safeguard their face with something so the ants cant suffocate them so they live longer.

It should get shut down. Cops will have to patrol the internet like they do the streets, because the world is full of malicious types who want to profit from the backs of honest hardworking people.

Why is everyone who is victimized by some internet scam suddenly "honest and hardworking", as if to say that low-brow blue collar folk never lie, cheat or steal themselves. The more accurate assessment would be that the person was a moron for believing in something that was "too good to be true"...or the person was trolling warez/porn sites and got infected by a drive-by install - still, it's called anti-virus and they should be using it.

Thats funny. I noticed my child porn was way down.

I kid! I kid! No really. I'm so glad they worked their butts off to slow down something that will speed right back up in two weeks.

Wish the government could get the same results with drugs and weapons. That might actually make a difference.

In the article it says:

"...includes spyware, viruses, Trojan horses, and porn ."

Shouldn't it be 'child porn' there?

It worked!

We host email for ~40 local businesses, and in the past week our levels of incoming spam have decreased in half! I'm not kidding. Now I don't know how much is directly related to this ISP shut down, but it probably is a good chunk of it.

Oh wow.
