After a decade in business, the site will be shuttered
When a tech news site passes, it's always a sad occurrence as many readers who became endeared to the site's charms are left in the dark. Thus is the case with ExtremeTech, the latest tech news casualty.
ExtremeTech is owned by Ziff Davis, publisher of PC Magazine. The publisher has had money problems and decided to close the site as a way of cutting cost and consolidating its offerings to focus on a smaller group of sites, including PCMag Network. Ziff Davis also recently cut the print version of PC Magazine.
The site had been around since 1999, originally founded by Nick Stam and Bill Machrone. The site officially launched in 2000. The site was not a direct competitor to DailyTech focusing, primarily on gaming rigs and enthusiast offerings. It traded blows with such sites as Anandtech and Tom's Hardware. The publication's current staff included writers Jason Cross and Joel Durham, producers Jeremy Atkinson and Mike Nguyen, a forum moderator, Jim Lynch, and the senior editor Loyd Case.
Nick Stam, which went on to become Marketing Director at Nvidia, saluted the former staff writing, "I want to applaud Loyd, Jason Cross, Joel Durham, Mark Hachman, Jim Lynch, and many others at ZD for giving the ET reader community so much great tech coverage over the many years, and I wish them the best success in the future."
Producer Micahel Muchmore, another former staffer fondly recalls, "I remember how excited we were whenever one of our stories would get on Slashdot or Digg's home page, which could give us a mental boost for the whole day. I actually remember being on vacation, when Jeremy got one of my stories on Slashdot. Double the fun."
ExtremeTech will go on as an archive-only site. No word has come yet on whether the key staff will be launching a new publication or going their separate ways.
Loyd Case concludes:
As for me, I'm looking forward to whatever comes next. I have been, and always will be, fascinated by how technology evolves and shape the human condition. Gaming, social media, digital content, and increasingly pervasive mobile communication are all shaping the world to come.

While ExtremeTech might be a foreign name to some, it will be missed by many.
