The dual core Opteron 185
Most websites have an Opteron 185 embargo until March 7. We don't.

A few weeks from now, AMD server owners will get a nice 200MHz per core speed upgrade with the Opteron 185, 285 and 885 series CPU.  The Opteron 185 is virtually identical to the Athlon FX-60 -- 2.6GHz per core, 2x1MB L2 cache, 90nm SOI process.

The Opteron 185 still features the Denmark (A6CD) core found on the existing Opteron 165 through 180 processors already in circulation.  Also, like the existing Opteron 1xx series, the Opteron 185 will remain a Socket 939 component.  The Opteron 285 and 885 are Socket 940 components only.  The 1xx series Opterons only feature a single HyperTransport interconnect.

Most of the Opteron line received a small price cut a few weeks ago in anticipation for the x85 Opterons.  Unfortunately, the Opteron 185 will still cost over $900 at launch we are told.  Considering the price of an Athlon FX-60 is still over $1,000 for virtually the same CPU, we certainly will not be ones to argue.

The Opteron 285 continues the Italy (A6CD) core as well.  Just a few days ago, AMD cut prices on the 2xx series dramatically --  the Opteron 275 series plummetted several hundred dollars when the Opteron 275 launch date was revealed.  Unlike some of the other Opteron launch dates in the past, vendors will have Opteron 185, 285 and 885 processors in stock on the March 7, 2006 launch date.

We put the Opteron 185 and 285 through the paces in a few simple benchmarks.  The Opteron 185 test bed consisted of a Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra-SLI motherboard with 4GB of DDR-400.  The Opteron 285 tests were conducted on an MSI K8N Master2-FAR motherboard with 4GB of DDR-400 per CPU.  All tests were done with two threads except for the dual 2xx series processors, which used four.

AnandTech has previously benchmarked the FX-60, so expect many of the same power consumption and thermal tests to resemble our Opteron 185 and Opteron 285s.

Don't you mean ".... UNTIL March 7"?

Now I'll go read what I'm sure will be a fine article!

Thanks,

Joe

How about some benchies, etc. on the new AM2 platform, since apparently you guys aren't limited by NDAs. :-)

Well my Opteron 165 is sitting nice and cool and stable at 2.6G. Have a look:

http://216.86.104.232/info1/

With a Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu cooler at it's lowest fan speed. The chip will reach 50C with both processors at 90+ % the CPU will just hit 40C. If I turn up the fan I can lower CPU temp but not chip temp. 289 Mhz Front Side Bus.

Up most of the time, DSL goes away on occasion.

"Most websites have an Opteron 185 embargo until March 7. We don't."

So what is the relevance of this statement? Did you get a cookie for this or something?

285?

Does the 285 not come with a math coprocessor?
;)

that joke is probably too old for much of the readership...

Besides, the 286 didn't have a math coprocessor either. It wasn't until the 486DX that the math coprocessor was integrated. Which then brought about the silly 486SX without a coprocessor, and then the 487 math coprocessor which was actually just a rebadged 486DX replacement processor (though it sat in a different socket, leaving the 486SX dormant on the board).

Lots of Intel sillyness those days, extracting much extra cash from consumer's pockets. Thank god for AMD, now processors are cheap and powerful from both camps.

i have an opty 175 as my home gaming machine CPU...its very sweet

i like the tradition of pricing the dual core 939 pin optys lower then the comparible X2's..LOL

i hope they release a 3Ghz 939 pin dual core opty someday
