Emissions testing for Mazda's new diesel engine faces difficulty

Mazda began talking up its plans to launch a new diesel engine to the United States a while back. Mazda wanted to put the diesel engine under the hood of its new Mazda6 in the U.S. during the second half of 2013.
However, it appears Mazda is having a hard time getting the engine certified for use in the United States. Due to delays in certification, the engine has been pushed until late spring of 2014. The company says that it's currently still working on emissions testing for the U.S. market.

Mazda said, "The on-sale date for Mazda6 Skyactiv-D clean-diesel has been moved to late-spring 2014, to accommodate final emissions testing and certification....More information on the Skyactiv-D clean diesel Mazda6 will be available closer to the on-sale date."

Robert Davis, senior vice president of U.S. operations for Mazda said, "I know we had discussed it being in showrooms before the end of the year, and everyone involved in the program is disappointed it will not be, but final certification testing -- the results of which are looking encouraging -- is taking longer than we had initially expected."

Mazda had also hoped the new diesel engine would help further increase its sales in the U.S.  Mazda6 sales were up 167% in August compared to August of 2012, but are starting to slow.

Long time coming

This is yet another delay in Mazda's years-long effort to bring their Sky-D to the USA. While I'm glad they're finally bringing it here, I'm really disappointed they chose to install it in the new 6 to test consumer reaction (read: sales).

Why, why, WHY didn't Mazda introduce it in the CX-5? Stupid, stupid, stupid! move Mazda.

Americans, especially those of us in the snow belt (Northeast US) are dying for a sub-$30k AWD vehicle with great MPG + practicality of a small SUV + diesel torque + killer miles per gallon!! Bring the Sky-D CX-5 to the USA!!

I come from Alberta, Canada. Believe me when I say it get's cold here. Also believe me when I say there are so many Diesel trucks here it's silly.

I was leaving work the other day and a truck turned the corner that was so loud the deafening rumble from it set off a car alarm.

Modern Diesels start really well in the winter. I used to get woken up every morning at 4:45 am by what sounded like a bomb going off but was actually a Dodge pickup that sounded more like a 747. It worked just fine at -40c too.

It's not the engine, it's the fuel. In the colder climates, winter diesel (has anti-gelling additives) is used to prevent gelling of the fuel. And you can still use additives in additional to the winter diesel that will lower your pour point even more.

CX5 seems to be about the best mix of mileage, cargo area, and style. Its even suppose to be a sporty drive. Not sure it fits my image but it should also be selling more than it is.

Always thought of them as station wagons cause they're built on car platforms. I don't think minivans are. Could be wrong. The only crossover I'd rock would be the BMW X1. And my wife just so happens to have one. :)

the honda odyssey van is based on an stretched accord platform. this in turn is strengthened and serves as the basis for the ridgeline "truck".
the mazda 5 mini-minivan is based on the mazda 3 platform.

conversely, the ford freestyle/taurus x crossover is based on volvo xc90 architecture.

companies save money wherever they can, i guess.

as for mazda, i believe that installing the diesel in the mazda 3 or the cx5 would have been a better choice, as the 6 doesn't seem to be selling nearly as well as those two.

Just as the CX5 is basically a Ford Kuga, better known here as the 2013 Escape.

The entire SkyActive Platform has interchangeable engines (just like Ford's Focus, Fusion, Escape) because they are all basically the same car.

So there is nothing stopping Mazda from transplanting this engine with no retooling (ie, engine mounts and a different ECU...)

Occasionally diesel vehicles have beefier axles and hubs/knuckles to handle the increased torque but these components are generally overbuilt these days anyway.

But with ALL of this in mind, it doesn't make sense to pick the underperforming sales vehicle to "test" a new engine with. They should offer the engine in the most desirable vehicle they have (CX-5) and see how many customers opt for it.

Ford used this strategy with the F150 and the Taurus (both on opposite ends on the sales spectrum) then after a feel for the market, put an Ecoboost option in all of their vehicles.

Seems like it worked out for them. The Ecoboost engines are usually chosen over NA engines in every single vehicle except the Fiesta, even though they have a price premium.

I think there's more to it than just the fuel. I owned a late 90's Ford Diesel once, it would never start like the new ones do. There was winter fuel back then as well.

My brother had a modern Dodge that would start at -20 without even being plugged in. That would be unheard of with the older ones I'm familiar with.

Cold reduces battery capacity which reduces starting capacity. Older truck's probably didn't have enough starting capacity to begin with. Bigger battery takes care of that. A lot of these newer trucks have two batteries too. That helps immensely.

Granted where I live it doesn't get below 0 but it does get into the low 20's in the mornings during the winter. Truck (06 diesel) starts everytime, even if I leave it outside overnight. My guess is your battery (ies) are w bit too low to get it done. I charge mine with a portable and "float" them with a 20W solar panel when not in use.

Dunno, Diesel trucks are annoying. But it's also worth noting that starting a large Diesel is different than starting a tiny 2 litre Diesel.

I would have to expect those tiny little car engines fare much better at cold weather starting.

You want to see hard to start, you should try one of the old diesels from the 60's and 70's. My dad had a tractor that needed ether to start in the summer. Winter if it was kept outside it wasn't happening, even with a circulating heater plugged in.

Could be worse. I know of one where you use a blank shot to get it going and to top it off if you did it wrong you could get the engine running backwards! Good fun but a pain also :-)

Just bought a new TDI, and it's not smelly at all. Newer diesels are nothing like the ones from a few decades ago.

You have no idea what you're talking about. Modern diesel cars are NOT the stinky smokestacks you (rightly) associate with diesels of yore.

If I removed the TDI badge from the back of my VW, and you were following my car, you'd have NO idea you were behind a diesel car. I guarantee it.

Diesel cars pollute more, its just a fact. Lets just chill with the rhetoric and move on.

Not that I personally care about vehicle pollution mind you.

Particulate is one of the issues. Another is nitrous oxide, the thing that causes companies to often use urea systems in addition to DPFs (particulate filters).

I've been ready for a decent midsize sedan non-hybrid 40+MPG for a while.

With the new CX-5 and Mazda3, I think the only competition for my money is all within Mazda.

This is unless I decide to just go with a Model S because it is a pretty good replacement for my current M37x especially with the tax credit and FREE CHARGING!

Yeah, the new mazda 6 is impressive all the way around. I think they would be selling like crazy except that Mazda has a bit of an image problem. Its a much nicer car than the sales class leader toyota camry.

The Passat TDI is a nice car in my opinion. It would be better, though, if VW would offer it in the S trim with cloth, the smaller wheels, and no sunroof.

I hit a trip average of 59 MPG going 50-60 MPH to route 42 in Cincinnati. That was with a passenger who weighs 320 lbs and with the windows rolled halfway down for much of the trip.

I wonder how reasonable Mazda will be with the price of the engine. Here, in the US, diesel is fighting, mildly put, an uphill battle:

* Nowhere but here diesel costs more than gasoline at the pump
* Most diesel options cost too much, compared to gas engines
* People here seem to stick to their first impressions forever
