Early Pre review finds keyboard is not that great but OS shines

The Palm Pre has been one of the most hyped smartphones since it was first seen at CES 2009 in January. The handset is an attempt by Palm to reinvent itself into a company with products that people want.

The official launch date for the Palm Pre is June 6 and at least one early review from Boy Genius Report (BGR) has found that the Pre is a good phone, but not the iPhone killer Palm and others hoped for. The handset will launch as a Sprint exclusive and supplies for launch day are expected to be very limited.

There are some serious caveats to the early review from BGR, one being that the phone isn’t fully functional meaning that call quality couldn’t be tested. The publication says that it believes the OS on the device is the final retail version, but that could be incorrect. However, the publication insists that the Pre hardware is the final retail version. That all boils down to take this early review with a grain of salt.

According to the review, the Pre has a fantastic screen and the reviewer writes, "The screen is where the Palm Pre shines. Selections take little to no effort and there’s that oh-so-magical water ripple effect when actually touching the display. It’s vibrant, rich and all around really clear. We’d rate it just behind the iPhone’s glass capacitive touch screen."

The keyboard is a big letdown according to the review with buttons that are tiny and nowhere near as good to type on as a Blackberry keyboard. The reviewer claims his thumb covers 3 or 4 keys. In the end, the keyboard is described as a "let down."

The phone is said to be sized well, but the feel was cheap compared to other high-end smartphones like the iPhone or Blackberry. BGR reports that the device feels like it is constructed of lower grade materials and feels very light.

The highlight of the Pre is the OS, which BGR says is off to a great start. Universal search works, but that was all that could be said about the search function. Battery life for the phone is a question mark. Without being able to place calls on the test phone battery life is mostly an arbitrary number. BGR reports that the device had a 30% charge when received and lasted about two hours.

In the end, the OS is great according to the review. However, the device has long road ahead figures BGR. The phone is made from second rate materials, with second rate hardware tied with a good OS on one of the least popular networks in America. All this at a price of $299, you can get an iPhone for less. Seems like a hard sell outside of customers stuck with Sprint and rabid fans.

The good news is that the Pre is known to be coming to Verizon, a much better network within the next 6 months or so according to a Verizon executive.

Fully functional Pre

I have been using a fully functional pre for almost a week now. Call quality is excellent on both sides though I have to say battery is not what I would like. It has a hard time making it through a day of heavy use like I and what im assuming most people who get it will use it. The OS is the best Ive used and I have an Ipod Touch, a touch pro, and have used the G1. The screen is amazing too, far better picture than the iPhone due to its 24-bit display. video playback is smooth crisp and clear and the audio quality is also impressive, especially over bluetooth. The keys on the keyboard seem small at first but are very easy to get used to. The slider does bother me though as its tough to slide out and as of yet there is no OSK. The OS at first seems to be missing several vital apps such as weather but these can already be found for free on the app catalog. Once I have more time I can write a full review for anyone that wants one.

That'd be great - hell, submit it to DT and maybe they'll publish it so we can have a good one!

Enough about the BGR review

"BGR reports that the device feels like it is constructed of lower grade materials and feels very light."

The BGR review is fraudulent. They've already backstepped and claimed that their review was of a pre-production Pre and not of a release unit. Who's to say that they didn't fabricate the whole thing? Because they had a picture?

The above comment regarding the Pre feeling light is case-in-point. The published weight of the Pre is 135 grams. The published weight of the iPhone is 133 grams. They weight exactly the same!

The BGR "review" was a web-traffic stunt. People, please stop linking to it already. It's a farce.

DT promoting a bogus review? Say it ain't so.

If you are looking for any sort of journalistic integrity you're on the wrong site.

Disappointed in DT

I must say that posting a summary of a half-ass review is not what I would expect from DT. I can find a half dozen positive "first impressions." Instead of acting like a fly-by-night blog, I wish you would ahve waiting and re-reported a real complete review, or review yourselves. Thanks for wasting as much time as I wasted reading BGR.

I couldn't agree more. Granted, this is a blog post, but the article just seems like gossipy hearsay.

These kinds of articles really anger me. It sounds like some apple fanboy of the age of 12 wrote this. Saying that Verizon is a much better network than Sprint. Well sorry to break it to you, but Sprint is rated #1 in Data speeds, call quality, and overall speed. Also, Sprint is a CDMA network, and so is Verizon. Sprint's EV-DO Rev. A is far superior than Verizon.

Oh, and to Verizon fans, this time Sprint isn't going to allow you onto their network (Sprint/ Verizon share some cell phone towers) So you verizon fans can kiss your 4G Network good bye for a while, while Sprint enjoys their network to themselves.

This article is terrible.

Wow someone really likes Sprint... I'm sure it's fast, when they loose 1 million subscribers a quarter you've got no one competing for cell tower traffic!

A word about the keyboard that Palm makes. It takes a week or more of usage to really get adapted to that keyboard and when one does get used to it, it is great|!.

The treo 650 had similar issues in the past. Miles better than anything else out there and easy for single handed operation which is just impossible on iPhone|!. Can't wait for a GSM model.
