Duke delayed once more
Shortest delay in the game's history

One of the most anticipated by fans and the longest delayed video games in history is none other than Duke Nukem Forever. The game was in development as far back as 1997 and still isn't on store shelves.

Kotaku reports that the game was picked up with development tasks changing to Gearbox in 2009, and finally things seemed to start moving again. If you are familiar with the long and delayed story of Duke Nukem Forever, this won't surprise you a bit. The game is delayed again. The publisher of the game issued an official statement pointing out that the new delay is the shortest in the history of the franchise.

2K president Christoph Hartmann said, "In case you haven't heard, Duke never comes early. We thank Duke's fans for their continued patience - I promise this won't take another 15 years."

Gearbox also offered its own apology in the form of an official statement from Randy Pitchford that read, "I'm very sorry for the added delay. We've all been working extremely hard and are very eager to deliver the game to you."

The exact reason for the delay isn't offered. The only good news is that the May 3 U.S. release date has only been pushed to June 14. After this long wait, Duke Nukem Forever needs to deliver on all fronts. One hint of suck and the backlash will be as epic as the delays on the game.

So far the game sounds very interesting, though most reserve judgment until the final product lands.

One interesting feature is the Capture the Babe mode since Duke is too manly for boring Capture the Flag. Players must capture the opposing team’s babe, and have the option to smack her around if she gets too rowdy.

The comeback for Duke Nukem Forever was announced in September of 2010.

There will still be many people that buy it even if the box is empty.

It's true I seldom buy video games this one I may be compeled to pay for though. As one of the first FPS games that wasn't as dark as doom and not patrioic as wolfinstein. Its campy humor and gore will always have a place in my heart it was a game that a B movie could never be.

Agreed, and it's almost assuredly going to suck. No game that's been in development more than 5 years has ever turned out well thus far. I don't see any reason for that to change now.

I should add that I'll probably buy it anyway.

I want to buy it, anyways, too, but, this news is actually _very_ depressing. My Wife's birthday is on June 14th.

OF ALL THE DAYS. 15 years and waiting, and Duke gets delayed to her birthday.

Ugh. Yes, I'm not expecting much at this point, but, c'mon, it is Duke we're talking about. This time, I can't bet on Duke. :-|

Didn't you read the article? You already captured the babe, so if the wife gets too rowdy just smack her around, then buy your game! Problem solved!

Just wait until you get to the part in the game where the two girls are supposedly going down on you. Then call the wife over and tell her you have a present for her and its in your pants.

it hasn't actually been in development for all of those years. if you look at various engine changes, and developer changes, it becomes quite clear that this game, made by gearbox, has very little, if anything, in common with the original concept.

will it suck? gameplay-wise, probably, no. gearbox know what they are doing. duke's humor on the other hand, has to tread a fine line between funny, cheesy, and offensive; and that is going to be difficult to achieve.

It's only been in development that long in the sense that it was never canceled. This iteration has only been in development since Gearbox took over.

And I digress. "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island" took 5 years and it was great.

Gearbox has repeatedly stated that they only finished up the game that was begun by 3D Realms and that they are "keeping their vision". So even this iteration has been in development longer than Gearbox is on it.

By CZroe on 3/25/2011 1:04:39 PM , Rating: 2
Marketing. They're "keeping 3D Realms' vision" in the sense that Duke is still Duke and they have the rights use to any earlier ideas.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Was actually a really good game, especially with the STALKER: Complete mod. I just played through it recently and it really kept me involved for the 60 or so hours it took to beat it. Lots of fun to be had in it. It wasn't perfect, but it was far from bad. For 5 bucks on Steam, it was worth every penny.

Which reminds me, I bought Call of Pripyat on sale for 5 bucks and the Complete mod for IT just came out a week or two ago...

Even Vanilla, both games are fantastic. And, I know this sounds unbelievably trite, but I like the flaws; they give the games character. The flaws show that they tried to make something great and didn't take the easy way out, which can't be said for too many games or their developers.

Half Life 2 was in development for over five years (granted, not much more than 5 years) and it's certainly very highly regarded.

Right, Half-Life and Half-Life 2 turned out awful :P

Considering the 15 year wait, what's another 6 weeks?

I've been waiting for this after I played the DN3D Atomic Edition to death.

One thing I found kind of interesting is that the original release dates had Duke coming out in the United States first and then internationally a few days later. Now, it's the opposite.

I wonder why.

I feel any need to buy this at release if at all. If it turns out to be a great game then fine but the odds are not good.

I consider myself a pretty seasoned pc-gamer. FPS, MMO's, Simulations, RPG, RTS, I've play games from all the genre's over many, many years....

But for the life of me I just think its amazing that DNF still has a pulse let alone is finally slated for release in June. I mean 1997 was a long time ago in terms of a video game. I have to imagine a lot of money was lost on this product over all those years and changing all those hands....why didn't someone just officially kill it?

I mean Duke Nuke'em was a great game and his "antics" were hilarious -- but I think in these stores about DNF they are over-inflating the "legend" status of Duke Nuke'em; especially what -- 14 years later...its only us "later" 20 somethings or older crowd that will even appreciate the Duke Nuke'em character after all those years.

To teenagers Duke Nuke'em is just another gimmicky video game character...nothing more, nothing less.

I also think after all this time -- a lot of folks have given up on this game already....

FINALLY -- my last thought on why this game just wasn't cancelled .... the expectation is going to be through the roof for this game after all the wait and the hype / news stories on it over the years. I think its going to be reviewed with a more critical eye than your average game gets.

When this game was first announced I was only 4 years out of high school for crying out this thing better be good! :)

I am going to buy it, because I think it will deliver that fun 1980s action star style of game play. I am not expecting a brilliant game, just a fun distraction for a few hours. I do hope that game does well enough that we see a sequel, and I think that game will be the real smash hit that gets it all right. Especially if it is done by Gearbox from start to finish.

Shortest delay in the game's history

That's not really saying much though is it?

Gordon or Duke?
By KendoTek on 3/25/2011 8:00:44 PM , Rating: 2
I made a bet with a friend a few years back, which game will be out first? Duke Nukem Forever or Half-Life EP3? I bet on Gordon coming back first. When the release of DNG was announced, he clamored for payment. Looks like he is going to be waiting for a little while longer. I know, I pretty much lost the bet, but until I can get the actual game, no pay!
