DreamWorks' Katzenberg looking to Toshiba for permission to go Blu-ray Disc

The high-definition format war isn’t over yet, as DreamWorks Animation is still releasing its movies exclusively on HD DVD.

Just kidding.

Well, kidding about the format war part – the victory is clearly in the hands of Blu-ray Disc – but not kidding about DreamWorks.

While both Universal and Paramount have been set free to explore their relationships with Blu-ray Disc, DreamWorks Animation appears to still be tethered to its agreement with Toshiba.

DreamWorks Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg was quoted in a Reuters story earlier this week as saying, “We have a partnership with Toshiba and have an obligation to see this through.”

Katzenberg was referring to the reported $150 million deal between the HD DVD camp and Paramount and DreamWorks last summer, when the studios agreed to drop Blu-ray Disc.

“As you know, we have been well-compensated for our support. It really is in their court at this point to really declare what the next step will be. We're poised either way to jump into the marketplace when the conditions are right to do so,” Katzenberg he said.

What’s puzzling is that Paramount was let go from its contractual obligations, and if you look at the upcoming catalog, Paramount has the strongest upcoming lineup with Sweeney Todd, Into the Wild, There Will Be Blood and the just-released Beowulf.

DreamWorks, on the other hand, has Things We Lost in the Fire next week, and Bee Movie the week after. Perhaps those discs are already pressed and ready to go (probably at Toshiba’s expense, under the contract).

“We said, we have a release coming up on 'Bee Movie.' What would you like us to do?,” Katzenberg posed.

So DreamWorks is willing to sacrifice sales of Blu-ray Disc (which aren’t cheap to manufacturer) on those titles while selling millions of Bee Movie on standard DVD.

2/28/08 Update: Bad news, HD DVD fans – it looks like we spoke too soon. Bee Movie won't be hitting HD DVD on March 11 as previously planned, reported Video Business, as DreamWorks has pulled the plug.

Paramount will officially end things next week, with its last releases being Into the Wild and Things We Lost in the Fire. Sadly, that means no Sweeney Todd or There Will Be Blood until Paramount retools for Blu-ray Disc production.

Surely there have been at least tens of thousands of Bee Movie in HD DVD pressed, likely packaged and now sitting on death row.

You mean to say they aren't releasing HD DVD movies I wouldn't have bought (at least in any HD format) anyways? Terrible.

Down side to this whole format wars thing being "a cleanup" process now - in a few years we all will find ourselves picking up the Star Wars Six Pack in blu-ray.. time to buy the adventures all over again for the 4th time (original, re-mastered, dvd, and next blu-ray).

5th time for me. Original, Remastered, DVD Trilogy, DVD Original + Special Edition, then Blu-Ray. :( Somewhere someone will have them on Laserdisc as well though so someones going for 6. That is, if Lucas chooses to release on Blu-Ray. Last I heard he said it would be coming "eventually" to a high definition format, but no timeframe or format was given, heck he might wait so long were on holographic by then =/

Are you including the video releases in that?
I'm sure my dad's got three versions of the movies on tape, then there's the DVDs and now the Blu-Ray version...well I'm not sure about the Blu-Ray version. Starwars looks good but the effects for the first way are starting to date badly and the CGI implementation isn't brilliant. The Hi-Def could bring out the negatives more than the positives in this case.

You do realize you don't have to buy the same move everytime it comes out... right?

I don't really see the point of owning that many copies of any movie.

This is a really good buisness.

I think this is a really good buisness. They made a contract and they stuck to it.

Granted it will hurt sales but right now its a niche market so... oh well. haha.

You're right about it being honest business, but I'm not so sure about it being smart business. I don't understand why they would still be tethered to a contract for a soon-to-be-dead HD format. Then again, I don't know the terms or conditions of their contract.

You're giving them too much credit IMO. Remember they are a corporation and always have shareholders in mind before ethics.

Here's what I mean... if they drop out of the contract they risk being sued for all or a portion of the $150 million deal; throw on top of that legal fees and bad press. Really the best option here is to stick with the contract; and why not make themself out to look like the good guy while they're at it?

awesome.

That blows for HD-DVD

I know the industry wants to "clean up" but at the same time, people should be able to buy some movies for their player if they paid the full bank for it. $300-$400 was pretty common for HD-DVD players.

My suggestion is: Online movie catalog, and keep the releases for another while just as a courtesy. Direct purchase style. But I'm totally dreaming.

Worse yet, I can't justify spending $50.00 for the HD-DVD addon for my computer :(

Who are you directing this to? Who is lamenting over this in any of these posts? Please stop wasting my time trying to fuel an argument that's not there in relation to the article and subsequent comments.

Why keep bringing it up? Who is lamenting in this thread?

Now that the war is over we can all look forward to everyone complaining that BD prices are too high.
