Samsung Galaxy Note III could have optical zoom

Starting in the second half of 2013, Samsung will be launching the new Galaxy Note III. One of the big features of the Note III will be a versatile camera module with built-in anti-shake technology.

The camera sensor used inside the Note III will have a resolution of 13-megapixels and promises to be comparable to other top digital cameras on the market. The camera will use optical image stabilization and Samsung is reportedly considered fitting the Note III with 3x optical zoom.

An unnamed Samsung executive said, "We are pondering various technologies at this stage - for example, OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and shutter functions. But, nothing has yet to be confirmed, so we cannot conclusively say that those functions will be added to the Galaxy Note 3."

There is some indication, however, that the thickness of the device when fitted with optical zoom was an issue for Samsung and that it could eliminate the feature in the final device.
Other rumors suggest that the Galaxy Note III will have a 5.9-inch display packed inside of a body no bigger than the Galaxy Note II.
The Galaxy Note III is expected to be unveiled at IFA 2013 in Berlin this September.

DO IT!!!

People buying a 5.9" phone do not care if it's a little thicker. If they cared about size they wouldn't get a phone with a screen that big, they're mostly going to be keeping it in their purse anyway.

Or in their saddlebags for those that don't have a purse ;)

3x optical zoom + OIS would be kickass in a device like this. It would certainly remove the need to buy a cheap stand-alone camera for owners of the SGN III.

Be honest, you keep your Note in your man-purse :P

Naah, my Note II fits in my jeans just fine, certainly more easily than my Nexus 7 did :-)

The thickness (thinness?) makes a difference when placing in a pocket. The Note II is feasible only because it's so thin.

Exactly. People forget so easily that we had 5-inch phones way back when, and no one bothered because they were too thick. I think a lot of people back then assumed it was because 5 inches was too much screen.

Or my shirt pocket...or my pockets on my jeans, khakis or shorts..

If you don't wear skinny jeans, these phones fit in your pocket just fine (and I'm not talking about baggy, sag around your knees type of jeans either...).

Weight though...that is the concern. If the optical zoom adds too much weight (to make the frame thicker, the support needed for the design may add more weight than desirable to the phone), I could see them ditching it...

My Galaxy S4 is already about max size for my shirt pocket. A Galaxy Note II is already too big though I can put it in the thigh pockets of my cargo pants.

Is that a Samsung Galaxy in your pocket or are you just happy to see... never mind.

Zoom or not doesn´t matter if they use small sensor like other phones.

Pureview 808 or N8 approaches are still a better call.

Pureview is better for image quality, but 18mm thick is way too much of a bulge. That'll take away from the handling and pocketability.

The slimmest zoom camera I can find is the Sony TX30, which fit a 5x zoom lens for a 1/2.3" sensor into a 15mm thick camera, but it's only f/3.5-f/4.8.

Maybe Samsung can make a 3x zoom lens for the 1/3.2" sensors in smartphones that's only 12mm thick, but it'll probably have reduced light sensitivity at the wide end. They're wondering whether the thickness, lower light collection, and extra cost are worth the zoom.

I'm guessing Samsung will stick with a fixed lens.

Thinness does make a difference. The note 2 is only poketable because it is thin.

I want it. It will go in my man pur-err, motorcycle tank bag. I can use the S-pen when my motorcycle gloves are a problem (can't use the touch screen).

I hope this give Nokia a kick in the rear to get their long rumored high end camera out for Windows Phone 8...
