Dell E6400 XFR Getting Hosed Down  (Source: Dell)

Dell E6400 XFR Open  (Source: Dell)
Dell E6400 XFR uses exclusive material stronger than magnesium

Dell announced today that it has launched a new fully rugged laptop called the Latitude E6400 XFR. The machine is designed to meet 13 different military specifications (MIL STD 810F) that include being able to withstand drops, sea fog, temperature extremes, thermal shock and explosive environments to name a few.

Dell says the machine owes its rugged design to a system it calls Ballistic Armor Protection System featuring a Dell exclusive material called PR481. Dell says that PR481 has twice the impact strength of magnesium alloy, 25% higher drop specification of up to four feet, and maintains structural stability at temperature extremes.

The protection system also includes tech Dell refers to as PrimoSeal that enhances protection from dust and liquids via a compression gasket with an IP-65 rating. Dell says that the rugged machine shares many of the same components with the Latitude E6400 notebook allowing it to be integrated into existing environments easily.

To keep the system cool in extreme temperatures, Dell uses a QuadCool Thermal Management system. Graphics are via NVIDIA's Quadro NVS 160M GPU with 256MB of DDR2 RAM. The battery of the machine uses ExpressCharge technology for faster recharge times in the field and the machine is 2.2-inches thick and starts at 8.5 pounds. The screen is 14.1-inches and uses DirectVue technology for better readability in sunlight. Pricing for the Dell E6400 XFR starts at $4,299.

According to Dell, despite the poor economy we can expect to see more new computers soon. Dell's CFO said that the company is planning to add more netbook models.

Because we're complaining about the computer's performance. Damnit, PC crashed. Gotta get it up...

I could really beat the living hell out of some smug Apple users at my local Starbucks with one of these after they comment on my Windows machine. Hope they "just work" with a few broken fingers.

Ahhh, good old assault with a Delly weapon.

I do not think the Apple Air will survive the Laptop UFC challenge with the tough book Dell.

Rugged notebooks are great for being rugged, but the extra weight blows. With the specs, this thing sounds better than Panasonic's toughbooks. I hated the toughbooks, cause they usually were extremely crap hardware for it's time of release.

The standard latitude is no schmuck when it comes to this type of stuff either.
For me, it's a rare day in the field when I see someone using a notebook that isn't a latitude. It's also a bug plus to have built in serial, vga, smart card, and V.92 and not have to carry around 4 or 5 dongles.
USB is nice for electronics and offices, but it isn't yet the preferred interface in the heavy equipment category.

I think serial and usb are the only useful ports on a laptop. Gotta connect up to a router/switch somehow.

They were probably cleaning the keyboard off. With all the masturbation jokes, I can imagine that a fire station might need the extra cleaning power.

More marketing speak.

Magnesium is not some super exotic material forged from "unobtanium". In fact, magnesium itself is not very strong. It's only real advantage comes in it's strength to density ratio, where it's relatively lighter than aluminum with similar strength. In fact, this would be signifigantly stronger if made from most steel alloys, but the side effect would be increased weight. Claiming some mag alloy is even better is pure marketing speak. Just another gimik to sell what may be a fine product. I'm not knocking the material, just the thought that it's something uber special.

Now if it was made from titanium, then it would impress me more.

EPIC Fail
