Dell XPS m1530  (Source: Dell)

  (Source: Dell)
The XPS m1330's bigger sibling makes an appearance

It looks as though Dell has even more up its sleeve today after the announcement of the Dell Precision T5400 and T7400. Next up to bat for Dell is the XPS m1530 notebook.

The 15.4" XPS m1530 is the bigger brother to the XPS m1330 which sports a 13.3" display. Processor options for the new notebook range from a 1.5GHz Core 2 Duo T5250 on up to a 2.6GHz Core 2 Duo T7800 processor. As with most new notebooks today, the XPS m1530 supports up to 4GB of DDR2 memory.

Customers can choose from either a 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS or GeForce 8600M GT for graphics duties while storage options are plentiful -- up to 200GB (7200 RPM), 300GB (5400 RPM) or 64GB (SSD) are supported. Other storage options include either a slot-loading dual-layer DVD burner or a slot-loading Blu-ray drive.

Other niceties include three USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI output, Firewire, an 8-in-1 media reader, an ExpressCard slot and integrated 2.0MP camera. Options include an Intel 802.11n wireless card, Dell Wireless 5520 HSDPA, Dell Wireless 5720 EVDO and Bluetooth 2.0.

The XPS m1530 measures 14.06" x 10.34" x 1.28" and weighs 5.78 pounds with the standard 6-cell 56WHr battery -- a 9-cell 85WHr battery is optional.

Unfortunately for potential customers, Dell has skimped on the display as it is only available with a 1280x800 (WXGA) screen resolution -- a 1440x900 option would have been nice. In addition, Dell doesn't even give users the option of upgrading to LED backlighting (as seen on the XPS m1330).

The lack of LED backlighting shouldn't come as too much of a surprise, however, as Dell ran into shortage problems with LED-backlit displays on the m1330 and supplying larger 15.4" panels could have been problematic for the company. Hopefully, Dell can get the kinks works out in the future.

Dell's new XPS m1330 is available now at a starting price of $999. Customers can choose Windows Vista Home Premium, Business or Ultimate for the operating system while Alpine White, Tuxedo Black and Crimson Red are your colors of choice for the notebook itself.

A nice laptop but...

I've been looking for a new laptop. The m1330 was too small for me and I don't want to upgrade to those 17" XPS gaming behemoths. This one provides a nice middle ground in screen real estate. It's too bad about the low screen res... that's kind of a deal breaker for me.

ya, thats kind of weird, usually Dell has options for a higher res screen when you order. With that said, the options come and go as parts are available, so I am sure it will pop up at some point. Keep looking.

I got one from them a few years ago.

I think it's perfect. Someone finally realized that the screen resolutions these 'gaming' graphics chips are paired with just don't work.

Anyone seen a 8700M play anything well on a 1920 x 1200 17" laptop? What about an 8600M on a 1680 x 1050 15"? Didn't think so.

(Though the new G92 8800M should solve this).

Agreed on the gaming res, but most people want higher res in windows, browser etc... I am sure the option for higher res screen will show up soon. Its there on lower end Dell models, so I am sure it will on high end like this.

yeah they will have an option sometime, but I wonder why they didn't give resolution

options to begin with...oh well...these look so much nicer than the plain 1520, although they

should have kept the screen border all silver rather than the letterbox look.

If your laptop card can't handle 1920x1200 then just lower the resolution down to something like 1680x1050 or 1280x800. Interpolation isn't much of an issue on a small laptop screen.

Also 1280x800 is too small for this laptop, it's the same as the 13.3" version, so effectively for most windows desktop users doing work it's basically the same size screen as the 13.3 model.

I have an Acer Aspire 1680 With a Mobility Radeon 9700 Pro 64mb (Don't Cringe, it pays Oblivion fine at medium quality settings).
I also look at everything via the 17" Widescreen monitor which only maxes at 1280x800 - This resolution is fine for me, but people who have used my laptop have said that it would be nice for a larger resolution because of the size of the screen, and how far you distance yourself from it.
Honestly, If I want a higher resolution I just plug it into my LCD Monitor, otherwise on the road lower resolutions are fine for me. - This is a personal preference though.

I agree for the most part. However I still would like to run windows and some games in 1440x900, but most games would've been run on 1280x800.

I didn't think of the new G92's coming out. Good point. That new process will certainly help power, space, and probably speed.

Were it not for the lower res screen, it would have been a better deal than the current Macbook Pros. Let's hope Dell will offer higher-res screens in the near future.

FYI, I configured a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 8600M 256MB, 250GB 5400rpm, Bluetooth, DVD+/- RW, Intel 802.11n, 85W battery, Audigy HD sound, and a 3 year warranty. It came out to be $2073. Includes 2.0MP Camera, HDMI out, Firewire, and 3 USB 2.0 ports.

Better than similar Macbook Pro if you don't mind a lower-res screen

The problem with Macs are that you pay for everything, whether you want/need it or not. What do you do with an 8600M on a Mac? wish it were a PC so you could play games? Buy a copy of Windows so you can play games? Kind of defeats the purpose.

the Vostro 1500 has an $384 discount, so beside the updated look what's so great?

Ok, so instead of voting me down why not try to answer the question? I just bought the Vostro 1500, I have about the same cpu (T5279) and it came with 2Gb DDR2.
Should I be envious of this new laptop?

WTF low resolution for an XPS laptop? This is supposed to be their high end, not an Inspiron.

XPS...memories

I remember when the "XPS" moniker actually meant something. Something to drool over. Back in the good ol' days, there was no such thing as a "midrange XPS".
