Dell and AT&T welcome the new Aero smartphone

We first brought you news of the Dell Aero, formerly known as the Mini 3, back in January of this year. Now, AT&T is finally making the smartphone available on its network.

Unfortunately, the Dell Aero's specs may seem a bit on the light side compared to the other Android phones on the market. The Aero features a 624MHz ARM processor, 3.5" (360 x 640) screen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 2GB of internal storage which can be expanded via a microSD card (up to 32GB), and a 5MP digital camera.

In what seems to be an unsettling trend for Dell, the Aero ships with the cobweb-filled Android 1.5 operating system according to Gizmodo whereas the latest smartphones on the market ship with either Android 2.1 or Android 2.2. If you recall, Dell's 5" Streak also ships with an outdated version of Android (in its case, Android 1.6).

On the other hand, the price is most definitely right if you're looking for a budget Android device. The Aero is priced at $99 with a two-year contract and at $299 off contract.

"The Dell Aero is built with a focus on style and performance to help people find new ways to connect with friends and express themselves socially supported by the nation's fastest mobile broadband network," said Ron Garriques, president of Dell's Communication Solutions.

The Dell Aero is available today from Dell.com/mobile and will shortly be available from AT&T's website.

Sigh...I'll ask.

*Goes to Dell Headquarters with megaphone.*

"Ahem...WHY?!!!"

Agreed.

My Aria only has a ~600MHZ CPU and it feels plenty fast so I don't think the hardware is problem with this phone but Android 1.5 is a show stopper.

I bought an LG Ally a couple of months ago for $49 in the store. Granted, it's Verizon, but it shipped with 2.1 and has a slideout keyboard. Why on Earth would anyone pay money for this phone?

And this is AT&T...I'll ask why anyone would actually give AT&T any of their money at all.

Maybe the customer in question wants the fastest cellular internet connection. Um, that's what the comercial said, right?

But yeah, 1.5 in this 2.2 world does seem kind of weird. Does bring the Kin to mind, doesn't it?

Not really. Kin would have been a hit if they only charged $10 a month for the 3G access instead of the $25-$30 3G charge.

This may be more of an HTC Sense optimization thing, but since I upgraded my Hero to 2.1 it's actually been noticeably snappier at pretty much everything. I think Dell just CBA.

Wow, I guess nobody is in a joking mood today, I know it's a Tuesday but come on. It was a joke pointed at people who use every post to fight about Apple... I forgot how seriously everyone takes comments.

You got downrated *even though you were sarcastic) but technically you are right. If you buy the cheapest iPhone from AT&T, you are getting some seriously dated hardware. They have refrubed 3G (not "S") phones on their web sites for sale.

WTF?

Who would buy this? I just got an HTC Desire for $79.99.

folks who aren't phone savvy and just assume newer = better.

Also, most people forget that the big cost is in the cell contract. They think $100 vs. $200 is a good deal, but if they realized it was really $2300 vs. $2400, they might think twice.

Bahahaha

Stop the madness of releasing these teenie bopper phones with small screens. You need to release a phone thats comparable to the EVO or Droid X with a 4.3 inch screen or bigger. The Dell Streak isnt in your stores or I would buy one. I dont buy online only without actually getting to play with one first. Jeez gimme a break where are the real phones at AT&T?
