For those of you who don't have girlfriends to tend to this Valentine's Day Weekend, Valve will tend to you

Carlos Garcia writes to tell us Day of Defeat: Source will be available for free via Source this weekend.  From Steampowered.com:
This weekend Valve is inviting everyone to try Day of Defeat: Source for free via Steam. Visit Steampowered.com to pre-load the game and be set to play at 12:00 pm (noon) PST on Friday, when the Free Weekend begins. Join the ranks as Axis or Allies troops located in Western Europe during the height of the war in 1944.

The free period ends February 12, 2006.

This is sweet. More people to own this weekend :) Hopefully it doesn't overload the servers by having tons more people play (if they do).

My problem is that i bought the Collectors Edition of HL2, and this isnt included, yet in the Silver package which is cheaper, and the gold package that is the same price you get a ton more games, including DoD:S, HL Back Catalouge, CS:CZ.

I know VU and Valve have had their difficulties, but this just turns me right off buying either companies products again as i am getting screwed for someone elses greed

Getting "screwed"? The Collectors Edition box clearly states what games are included. Your problem is that you didn't do enough research before buying.

Yes, DoD:S is included in Silver/Gold. It's called an incentive - so consumers would buy HL2 on Steam.

That's the spirit. DOD:S is a neat game. Its very fun, fair, and people typically play as a team (somewhat forced by spawning in waves). You will love DOD if you've played cs for awhile and are completly sick of the lack of team play and the 100% predictable recoil patterns. It looks great too.

I wish valve would put the old school HLDM into source but I think it may be too unwelcoming to new players. Maybe the most unwelcoming of any game ever made.

HLDM:Source is on it's way.

If I'm not mistaken, it'll be released with or around Aftermath.

DOD:S was included with Gold package. People had to pay for the whole gold bundle. Now they release it for free? They shouldn't release a game free, that was already payed for by other people that bought silver/gold packages. Instead, they should release that stupid game, Rag Doll Kung fu for free. I would never buy that game.

Steam is also not regulating the port numbers used over their network. There is a specific range of ports people should use, yet people are creating servers with stupid port numbers (HTTP 80, 8080, etc.). I shouldn't have to add all these ports to my firewall rules. In fact, I don't. I only allow official ports. If people are that stupid and don't use the official port ranges, I won't play on their server.

It's a free trial that lasts this weekend only.

Mate,

The "DODS Free Weekend" is only for ONE weekend. It is from Feb. 10th to Feb. 12th. Once the time expires, anyone who wishes to continue playing DODS will have to purchase the game (if they do not already own it).

Call of Duty (1 and 2) has owned DoD since it came out. ;-)

I'm surprised people even bothered with DoD:S when CoD was vastly superior to begin with. Those I know who actually have played DoD:S have described it as "complete rubbish". No surprise it was part of the "Gold" package for only $10 more.

CoD and DoD have different gameplay principles. I know people that don't like DoD because of it's lack of ironsights, which is lunacy. I'd be playing DOD:S a whole lot more lately if I didn't ban myself from other FPS games until the CSS season ends. It's a wonderful game!

Dude, I guess you don't get it. Its not about being 64-bit its about being the fastest when playing 32-bit games. Second their is a an O/S its called WinXP-64, and Valve is making a 64-bit exe for all of their games. So far HL2 and DOD are 64-bit compatible.

So short story Althon64 is fast because its fast not because its 64bit. But even then their are 64bit O/S solutions (windows) and apps for them (Half-Life2).

G'day Mate,

Currently only HL2 and HL2:The Lost Coast support 64bit mode. CSS and DODS will eventually gain native 64bit support but not until 64bit becomes the standard (2+ years).

My system specs:
2.8 P4c
9800Pro
4x512 DDR400

My computer is 2+ years old and I can still play DODS @ 1680x1050 with everything set to medium/high, no AA, trilinear filtering.

Cheers!

scenario 1: i spend ~1000 on new platform, i buy new XP64(w/ limited driver support), install HL2... and the rest of my APPs will be ol' plane 32-bit
scenario 2: i keep my dated PC, i buy some 'X-CubeStation' (to play same games) and wait till Vista comes out and take it from there.

and it's not like i don't enjoy to mess w/ hardWare, but looking back i upgraded WAY TOO OFTEN just to chaise 10 extra frames and to gain 10-25% over all.??? no thx.

Shiz,

What are your current system specs?

And I don't know if you know but Vista is delayed yet again. Also, DX10 videocards won't be arriving until Q406.
