"We weren't trying to creep people out, but one thing I have learned now in this digital age is people can be as rude as they want as long as they don't have to look you in the face."

By now, you've all probably seen at least one or two of Palm's new commercials for the Palm Pre (or one of the popular parodies). Instead of getting to the point of talking about the Pre's features in brief little snippets, the ghostly female protagonist often goes on about jugglers and reincarnation in a creepy, monotonous voice.

Whereas Apple's iPhone 3G S ads often talk about features like speech recognition, copy/paste, and faster computing speeds to generate buzz, the man behind Palm's new advertising push, Modernista's Gary Koepke, thinks that the “creep” factor in the commercials is enough to keep people buzzing about the Palm Pre according to Advertising Age.

"The Pre is probably being talked about more than other phones right now because of the marketing and advertising, and that's a good thing,” said Koepke. “Could the ads work harder to show exactly how the phone works? Yes, but we knew it would be polarizing people to have a woman not shout at them and tell an interesting story."

"There's nobody involved in an iPhone ad, and 'Your life is on BlackBerry' -- isn't that great? Instead of having a life? We wanted a middle ground between those two places -- what about the people who want a really great smartphone," Koepke continued.

The Palm Pre is seen by many as the first real challenger to Apple's dominate iPhone in the consumer smartphone market. Analysts estimate that Palm sold roughly 300,000 Pre's in June, but it still wasn't enough to keep mobile phone service provider Sprint from losing 250,000 customers in Q2.

I just saw it the other night while watching TV with my wife. We both looked at each other at the same time and said, "What a dumb commercial."

Sure is but its Viral and spreading like mad. Might be short lived and replaced but man are people talking about it which is exactly what a commercial is supposed to do. Get the word out.

Yes thank God we live in a society where the products don't even matter but the way it's advertised does.

I don't want to talk about a commercial i want to talk about a product and wether it's good or bad, and the commercial doesn't help in any way with that.

This viral marketing has to be the worst idea ever launched. I'd call it a stampede in the herd dynamics of humans.

The most ghastly thing about it is that it actually works very well.

Viral ads seem silly to me because most people will not recall what the ad was for! For example I have a friend who enjoys the sprint "what if _insert industry_ ruled the world" ads, but he could not remember which company they were for. For people like him the ads have failed.

im not a huge iphone fan and honestly wont consider getting one at least until a CDMA model is released, but you have to give credit to their advertising. they show at least three really cool features in every commercial, with a frequency of feature changes between commercials at least bi-monthly, keeping the feature set feeling fresh and new, often demonstrating things the average joe didn't know it could do.

that's advertising, and it keeps a buzz as well.

you don't need to creep people out to keep a just a childish concept.

Unfortunately dumb commercials work. Remember the "you've got ring around the collar" commercials from way way back? They were dumb, annoying as well, and one of the most successful ad campaigns in marketing history.

Hell, Apples Mac vs PC are about as far from truth as you can get and they have been quite successful. Cuteness beats facts.

Also, does anyone actually believe the "We weren't trying to creep people out" aka "We weren't trying to gain media attention for our product." thing? Yeah right!

There are two sides to advertising phones, from the manufacturer, to the provider. In many cases, here in the USA it would be Sprint that is doing the advertising, because the phone is currently an exclusive. I don't remember who the exclusive carrier is for the Pre in Europe, but if it isn't advertising, that would explain it.

I saw her in the SciFi movie Sand Serpents. Her voice is what gave it away as to where I had seen her before.

I agree. The T-mobile ads with Catherine Zeta Jones are creepier. You know that wrinkly troll of a husband is hiding somewhere nearby. I swear, my eyes wander all over the screen thinking "Where's Michael hiding?", like those "You'll freak out when you see it" photos you find online.

I actually thought the commercial was good, knew excactly what the woman was talking about.

She explaines what the phones is designed for.. without saying it.

It's a tough call.

In one corner you have Palm trying to compare the deep and mysterious philosophical theory of reincarnation to the ability to check email and facebook at the same time on a cellphone.

In the other corner you have Apple, who wants you to believe they invented cut and paste in 2009.

It's attention grabbing, but I wouldn't call it creepy. And the whole, "I can barely keep track of the ones I'm living." makes sense to me. Either way it's working as even now DT is helping spread it.

I find people know far more about their phones from a technical standpoint than they do any other gadget they own. To go the "it just works automagically" route makes it seem weak, when its not at all.

Besides, phones have become such a fashion accessory for so many people, making this the face of your pitch is just horrific.

I watch hardly any TV, so when I read the introduction to the article I thought it was that stupid cackling advert that pops up from time to time on websites, which is a real pain because I might actually be interested in reading what is on the website, so I just close that tab and desperately hope that my "hit" is noted as lasting less than a minute.
Then I read more and thought why is this guy trying to justify the way he did this advert? So I read the comments and found that most people seem to consider it boring.
Now "boring" isn't necessarily a failure in advertising, but for a "first impression" it's pretty close to it.
One of my favourite advertisements is a local (in New Zealand) appliance chain that has 3 stores ... yes, an appliance chain with just 3 stores. Their gross sales probably is less than Palm's advertising budget. Every week they have a new advert, and some weeks they will have several new adverts. Just like the Microsoft adverts, it is just two people talking, but on the radio, so the expenditure isn't high. However, I believe they probably are the most widely listened to with interest adverts on the radio in Auckland. Why? Because they are nearly always interesting. I don't know John and Adrian, but I know their voices, I love the way John is slightly more "geekie", and Adrian is more "normal". Last week he got a "phone a friend" phone call from the TV quiz show "Who wants to be a millionaire", but no, it wasn't for him, it was for the new "smart" washing machine!
so Palm, if you read this: Find radio stations that advertise Magness Benrow and listen to their adverts (and no, their website isn't fantastic either), "interesting" is better than "boring".

Not only are these ads creepy, they've scared the sh*t out of me. Using a Palm Pre will turn me into a near-translucent shell of a human with badly slicked back hair, and in the case of a woman, no makeup? Additionally, I have to talk about pointless bullsh*t to my obviously deluded New Age friend who thinks eating nothing but tofu and sweeping away grasshoppers from her path lead to a quality life? And then I have to waste part of my lunch hour strolling through the park watching jugglers instead of keeping up on current events or squeezing in some other daily errands I need to run?

I guess I'll get that iPhone after all...
