Software Cox Enters Agreement with TiVo

TiVo powered Cox DVRs for customers in 2007

DailyTech previously reported Comcast was testing TiVo powered cable boxes. Cox Communications has jumped on the TiVo bandwagon as well, with TiVo and Cox Communications having agreed to offer TiVo service to Cox DVR systems. The TiVo service for Cox DVR set top boxes will not require new DVR set top boxes. Instead the software will simply replace the existing software on compatible DVR set top boxes and allow users to enjoy TiVo services. There’s no mention which Cox DVR set top boxes are compatible, though its most likely limited to the Motorola DCT-6412 series set top boxes.

Users that opt for the TiVo software will be able to experience TiVo service without sacrificing On DEMAND or high definition video compatibility. TiVo service features such as Season Pass, WishList and KidZone will be supported on Cox TiVo DVR set top boxes.

Cox users wanting a TiVo powered Cox DVR will have to wait as the service isn’t launching till the first half of 2007, in select markets.

Wonder what the monthly charge will be

Under $20 is my guess. I love TIVO but $20 a month and then a cable card on top of that is absolutely ridiculous.

A normal box costs about $7/month (using TW prices) plus $5 (using Directv's tivo fees). A cable card (which you don't need since the whole point of a CC is to eliminate a box) only costs a buck fifty (again, TW price).

I'd pay about a max of 24.99. Right now I'm paying 19.99 for an SA 8300HD DVR. The SA DVR software leaves a lot to be desired...but SA has an HD DVR box coming out soon that has a DVD-R built-in...this'll probably kill Cox using this.

My Cox Scientific Atlanta DVRs crash more often than Windows 95. I'll take tivo please.

I agree, I like my motorola box much more than the directv hd tivo we use at work (I work for a regional electronics retailer). tivo is very sluggish and not very intuitive. too muich spoonfeeding.

having worked for Cox before as an outsourcer, I wonder who will be providing support. If it's TiVo, they should probably already be used to it. If it's Sykes or Calltech, eesh. I've been through Firmware flashings of the Motorola Boxes before, and from my experience, there's an 85% chance of failure on the box requiring an I2 or a LukeWarm Ini to return to normal.

Cox Communications really needs to think about having people come in and swap the boxes out instead.
