This revamped classic -- priced under $7 for the next two days.

The new edition of the popular online shooter game, Counter Strike: Source, is back with major expansions.  This updated version is a limited beta, now available for Steam on Mac, and it offers PC Vs. Mac cross-platform play.

According to the Steam website, "Source blends Counter-Strike's award-winning teamplay action with the advanced technology of Source™ technology. Featuring state of the art graphics, all new sounds, and introducing physics, Counter-Strike: Source is a must-have for every action game."

The classic favorite adds 144 achievements; new lifetime player stats and summary screens; new match player stats and summary screens; and a new end of round display with MVP.  Here, the MVP provides an interesting fact about the player.

Players can defuse bombs and face off in a pistol round.  They can even track kills and deaths and improve accuracy with each weapon.

CSS also includes an updated scoreboard with new icons and visual style, MVP stars, and avatar pictures.  A new cinematic death camera, new domination and revenge system, added avatar icons to voice chat, a scoreboard, an end of round display and source engine updates round out the newest perks of the game.

The new patch fixes up damage issues and improves the HUD of the game. To celebrate the updates, Valve Software is offering Counter Strike: Source for more than 60 percent off.

Well done to Valve for porting the Source engine to the mac...! I hope they continue to grow on the mac platform!

Yes, Valve just keeps making the right moves.

While everybody else is just churning out the same old gritty FPS, Valve is pushing its diverse library out to an entirely new audience.

If I'm on a mac, who's games am I going to play? Which brand will I soon develop a loyalty?

...and I guess this also means Macs are getting more popular now. Soon they will get viruses too! .)

Macs have a virus already. It's called Steve-IV. It has four stages:

1) An incubation period - This is the initial adoption phase where a consumer purchases an iProduct and falls in love with the aesthetics. Typically asymptomatic.

2) Acute infection - After a brief period of euphoria the consumer discovers numerous flaws, from the inconsequential to the super-critical. Typically treated, but not always cured, with a costly upgrade.

3) Latency stage - The consumer, increasingly numb to the growing number of flaws, begins to believe the device is magical, revolutionary and simple. Typically simple, never magical, and rarely revolutionary.

4) Opportunistic infection - Completely contaminated by ether (incidentally, the medium through which the RDF is propagated), the consumer continues to justify the reliance on Apple products and even seeks to spread the malady ("Solamen miseris socios habuisse doloris" syndrome). Typically annoying and treated with regular doses of common sense. Severe cases require a kick in the nuts.

I'm quite happy that Valve has ported this to the Mac, starting first with Team Fortress 2 which was ported not too long ago. Actually, I nearly popped a load in my pants when I first heard about this.

For once, I can legally murder thousands of Apple fans, over and over again while basking in the newfound frolicing cries of displeasure as their intestines, ears, arms and legs skid along the ground into walls around them as the stain of their blood litters my view.

Thank you Valve. Thank you for allowing me to rid the world of them over and over again. They can not escape from their torment now, they are one respawn away from doing it all... again. :)

So, honest question.

How the hell are you supposed to zoom effectively with no RMB?

Or detonate sticky bombs? :) Or use compression blast. Of all the classes in TF 2, I'd expect most i-Gamers would be pyros, as W+Mouse Button 1 is all they probably can handle. ;) One of them might (I doubt it) want to deflect rockets. I'd be more concerned with Apple's absolutely deplorable keyboards or IPS screens full of ghosting.

Wait.

To an Apple fan, as long as they are standing still, the game looks absolutely beautiful, so, all is good.

Compression blast? Let's remember who we are dealing with.

They are still getting used to the WASD configuration. The poor mac players can barely strafe, let alone use complex combat mechanics.

Like you said, the influx in W+M1 Pyros wasn't a coincidence.

fantastic! this'll be fun :)

i like how much of a chunk that little promotional information for the game is. for any other computer it would be described as a tiring 6 year old game engine :P

Or not. Porting to these guys shoulda been done years ago. Wake me up when they release Project Black Mesa or a new HL2 Episode.

Its because it took apple this long to get decent hardware to properly support it. ;-)

And they had to become a PC to do it... Ironic isn't it?

At-least when they used PowerPC they had some form of differentiation to the PC brethren, now they are a clone with a shiny case and a different OS. (And I don't even like the cases... Neon's and side windows for me please!)

Yknow now that i think about it, mac vs PC cross platform play on this game is probably *the* worst decision by valve ever.

I'm a hardcore gamer, i've played tons of shooters, but back in 2005 me and 4 other classmates played against 1 guy in counterstrike, who had played it for about 4-5 years straight (original and source). He completly pwned our asses, it was headshot mania. I got a few in, bless my muscle memory, but honestly it was a slaughter. I pretty much did the same to him and the other classmates in every other shooter (especially Q4 and UT2004) but in CS(S) he was unstoppable

That was 5 years ago. Anybody still playing on the PC is going to be like that now. Now imagine a apple fan picking this game up for the first time.

Pretty cool

As well as being happy to see Mac users get access to good games, I'm glad us PC users are getting something out of it too. Looks like some useful improvements to CS:S.

Better late than never? The dozen Mac gamers should be pleased, and their 9400M IGPs should run it alright, albeit, at lower resolutions. The half dozen Linux gamers are still waiting for the UT3 Linux installer.

As your providing game release information, I thought that I'd ask.

I've never played Counter Strike, but it's even more stupid to boycott a vendor that makes perfectly good games just because it makes them for a platform you don't like. The Windows versions work just fine, right? Then why should a Mac version bother you?
