Xbox 360 Arcade Edition  (Source: IGN)

At Walmart this weekend limited quantities of Xbox 360s can be had for a mere $99, via a $199 purchase and $100 gift card.  (Source: Yahoo)
This is one hot deal!

Don't bother checking your calendars -- it's not Black Friday yet (that will land on November 27).  However, Walmart's upcoming big Saturday sale might have you fooled.

The highest profile item of the sale is effectively a $99 Xbox 360 Arcade Edition, thanks to a $100 dollar Walmart gift card that comes with the $199 system purchase.  Other hot deals include a Sony Blu-Ray player for $148, a 46" Plasma HD TV for $788, and a $298 HPG60 laptop, which comes with a 250 GB hard drive, 3 GB of RAM, a 2.2GHz Intel Celeron processor, and Windows 7 Home Edition preinstalled.

The deals have been confirmed via advertisements on Yahoo and are sure to send holiday shoppers into a frenzy.  Walmart's ad states that stores will have at least 10 units of the Xbox 360, Sony's Blu-Ray player, and the HPG60 laptop.

Other items will also be included in the sale including another smaller HD TV and an upconverting 1080p DVD player.  The deals were first leaked by Kotaku, before being subsequently confirmed.

Walmart says availability in Wisconsin, Alaska, Hawaii, and Oklahoma may be limited.  It will not be offering rain checks for the sale items, so you better arrive early if you want to snag a $99 Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 is in distant second place behind Nintendo's Wii, but is still a relative success for Microsoft, due to strong game sales.  Microsoft has pocketed the greatest share of revenue throughout much of the next generation console war when you consider game sales, thanks to its high attach rate.  More adult titles including RPGs, first-person shooters, and action titles have helped make the Xbox 360 a popular console among hardcore gamers.

Correction:  The Xbox 360 obviously already retails for $199.  So the price with gift card was $99, not $199, as more than a couple readers pointed out.

Don't you mean its effectively a $99 Xbox 360 Arcade Edition, thanks to a $100 dollar Walmart gift card?

The Arcade is already $199. The $100 gift card is after that.

So in other words, it really isn't a good deal at all because you initially need to spend $299 to even get the gift card and then you need to spend another $99 + gift card to get the 360 arcade console. Also, do you need to spend $299 total to get the gift card or does it need to be on a single item?

I am currently one cup of coffee short this morning so maybe I am missing something obvious.

The Arcade is already priced @ $199. The Elite is $299. Most people have talked about buying the 42" Sharp @ $498 and then using the gift card immediately to purchase the Arcade @ $99 or the Elite @ $199 (or PS3 @ $199).

Can you read? Seriously. It's $199 for the 360 and a $100 eGift Card. You don't have to pay $299 for anything. You'll walk out the door paying the same price as if you'd gone to Target or Best Buy, except you'll have a $100 Wal-Mart eGC.

It's still wrong.

The Xbox 360 Arcade (no hard drive) sells regularly for $199. You GET a $100 Wal-Mart gift card with the purchase, so the Xbox still costs you $199, not $99. You can then take that $100 gift card and buy a hard drive, wireless adapter, controller, games, whatever you want.

That would only be true if you didn't have to buy anything else. However, it is very clear that you get the console for the regular price of $199 and then you "effectively" get $100 off anything else you purchase. The way Mr. Mick writes it, I can see why many people might believe they actually get $100 off the console itself.

Calculus is a basic form of mathematics. I do not understand why you cite it as being difficult.

Then again, I am only a Computer Science/Applied Mathematics double major undergraduate student. Maybe if I tried my hand at tensor calculus, I would learn what you mean. :/

Yes ... but you could return the console and use the GC later to repurchase. The AE 360 is always $199 as you know already.

If you return the console you have to return the gift card or be charged $100 for it. You can't just keep a $100 GC after you return the item. No store is that stupid.

Have you ever returned things to Walmart? Haven't you heard of the stories where people buy things "new" only to get them home and find out that DVD player box only has a few bricks in it?

Oh, yes they are!!
I used to work there part time and we got back a car stereo that felt suspiciously heavy when I went to re shelve it from the returns department. I opened it up and there was an old pair of jeans wrapped around a brick!! The people in returns just shrugged like it wasn't a big deal.
I've had people return fishing rods that were obviously more than a year old for credit and the managers allow it. Walmart is known for their liberal return policy.
In this case though, they probably have it where you have to return the gc and the xbox to get a refund.

I know this article is mainly about the XBOX, but I was kind of interested in the BluRay player. But the $148 price is kind of lame. For example, Amazon sells it for $152, not even on sale. Considering free shipping and sales tax, it is Cheaper at Amazon, and you don't have to waste time waiting in line on Saturday morning.

Everyone is going to have the BDPS360 super cheap this holiday season. Sony just released the N460 player that is going to be their new entry level player as soon as the holidays are over, I'm sure. Netflix streaming and youtube on a sony player will be very popular.
