For the person who has everything

From the category of “what were they thinking” Marubeni Infotec Corp. is marketing a computer mouse called the Play Mouse that is made of natural wood. This optical mouse was jointly developed with Yamaguchi Kogei, a Fukui Prefecture company specializing in wooden products.

Measuring 53 x 88 x 27mm, the mouse is available in two types of wood maple and walnut.  The mouse has a smooth immaculately sanded finish and both mouse buttons are made of wood as well. It is being sold for 9,800 Yen ($96 USD) and is the ultimate melding of nature and technology.

If wood computer mice were not enough they are also selling wood flash drives in the shape of animals. The animals available are the dog, the hippopotamus, the elephant, the swan, and the pig. Available in two types of wood walnut and maple the flash drives have a capacity of 1 gigabyte and will connect to your PC using a USB cable. The USB drives are 90 x 18 x 60 mm in size and will cost 7,980 Yen ($78 USD).

When products such as these are announced it makes you wonder what the thought process was that went in to them. Who the target market is, who are they competing with, who would value a wooden hippo flash drive that can only hold a gigabyte and cost four times as much as competitor products? My guess is these products could be targeted to the extremely eco conscious, people with too much money, or the small segment of the planet who just want electronics made of wood.

There's nothing 'ecologically conscious' about making products out of wood...especially when the trees to source that wood are harvested, transported (and possibly even planted and fertilized) with massive amounts of oil-based products.

Besides, look how well a wood body worked out for Bender.

Bahahahahaha, Bender was my idol. A little part of me died the day the show was cancelled.

The stains and urethanes to finish the wood aren't the most environmentally friendly chemicals, either.

They could go with the natural wood color and use natural oils and waxes.

They could do that ... But do you think they would?

You're right about that.

But that's not why they exist, is it? They exist because the perception is that wood is "green" and therefore a wooden mouse is more environmentally friendly than one made of plastic.

You all are looking too hard for an answer why they are made of wood and masher is as always looking to prove some anti-environment point....

They are made out of wood because wood looks nice. The grain and color of wood is appealing to many people and the idea of nature and technology is "fun".

That's it. That's your answer right there.

Devils advocate: Opposed to products made of massive amounts of oil based products?

Really though, this is one of the dumbest ideas ever.. and since there will be other components within the wood, you still have to throw them out the same way as a plastic product.

Once the electronic part dies, pull the electronic part out and keep the wood animal... or keep it in there, get some wood putty/filling and keep it as a decorative animal.

My guess is the "cute products market"

how do you explain then the location and position of the flash drives' USB connection?

This has "bestiality weird" stamped all over it.

Poor animals with USB cables stuffed in their butts :(

Take another look at the dog pic, noting it had a tail already, but don't stare too long or the internet police will snatch you away.

The location of the port is an accurate representation of the data I see on the bulk of my customer's computers/flash drives.

These products look like something a grade-school kid would do if they had shop class. With so many great wood carvers in the world these products are just crude, and the mouse buttons are a joke. It could've at least been functional and shaped ergonomically, something you'd use as the primary mouse or USB device instead of more junk in your desk drawer or closet.

Personaly for a mouse I would want it from a maple, stained a nice dark hue. Possibly mix maple syrup into the stain for a nice smell? for the flash drive, walnut, unstained, for the natural smell, and lower weight, preferably shaped like rectangle.

Keep your sticky mouse away from me, that's not maple syrup! ;)

or is this worthy of failblog?

Anyone else agree they might have not thought things through enough to realize people are jamming the usb cord up the dogs....

Do the other wooden animals take the usb cords rectally or is that unique to the dog?

Those trinkets I can seriously find myself making one back then and can right now (having woodworking as a hobby in the pocket). There is nothing special at all about the way it looks done.

Some of the stuff that they come up with astounds me. It's like ... Who comes up with this stuff?!? HaHa ... Always coming out with some new toy or gadget it seems like!

Here's a side not that doesn't have to do with Japan all that much ... But speaking of coming up with stuff ... Whoever came up with the idea of pop-up books, I think, had way to much time on their hands and were extreemly bored! Just thought I would share that! :)

And also, stop personifying trees. They aren't, say... animals. Or mice.
