Two Comcast plans will see 2 to 3 times faster uploads

Many internet users simply think about download speeds when they are shopping for a service provider. What some forget to consider is the upload speed of a plan. This is particularly important to those who upload pictures to internet sharing sites and videos to YouTube and similar services.

Comcast announced today that it will be increasing the upload speed of two of its internet packages at no additional cost. Comcast says that its 6 Mbps download / 384 Kbps upload package will see the upload speed nearly tripled. The new plan will keep the same download speed and increase the upload speed to 1 Mbps.

Comcast’s faster 8 Mbps download / 768 Kbps upload package will see a bit more than twice the upload speed to 2 Mbps uploads. Comcast had previously announced a service called PowerBoost that increases download speeds to 12 Mbps on the Performance tier plans and up to 16 Mbps on the Performance Plus tier on files that are 10MB or less in size.

Senior Vice President and General manager of Comcast High-Speed internet Mitch Bowling said in a statement, “As the Internet and its functionality evolves, so will our services and offerings,” said Mitch Bowling, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Comcast High-Speed Internet, Comcast Cable. “We’ve made a number of complimentary speed increases over the last few years and we focused this latest increase on upstream speeds so our customers can take even better advantage of the ever-expanding amount of interactive applications the Internet has to offer.”

Increasing upload speeds for customers will be a welcome announcement when other internet providers have been announcing usage based plans in some areas. Time Warner announced recently that its lower cost plans would have a monthly bandwidth limit of only 5GB in one test area.

I'd rather just have my privacy respected.

What privacy?

By that, he means no traffic shaping.

Except that traffic shaping has nothing to do with privacy...

So, really, he'd rather have his piracy respected.

Comcast finally caught up to what I had back in HK in 2002!

Cheap shots aside, I'm glad I have 20/5 fios...

I'm eagerly awaiting the day I can get FiOS in my area. One of these days it'll come. One day.....

I would like to tell you both Comecast HSI and Verizon FIOS have there downsides. The saying, grass is always greener on the other side, fits well here. By the way I have FIOS 20/20 service in a very competitive area.

If the 2 services are comparable, that is perfectly fine. I don't want to get raped for $75/month for service that would cost me $49/month with Verizon. I'd switch to ANYTHING else in my area if it were only available and cheaper.

Me too, I'd take service 1/3rd as fast as cable for 1/2 the cost. I guess I don't pirate or utube or whatever, enough to need a faster service than practically any site I connect to can provide. Most of my concerns these days is the damn webmasters or designers making all the crap that bloats webpages and requires server side scripting. It's really sad that content hasn't gone up but pages have grown to maybe 5X their former size on many sites.

I guess it's a judgement flaw like many software developers have, mistakenly thinking people only want to stand still from a performance standpoint so it's ok for them to keep increasing the bitrate to get the same things done.

Yeah, me too but Qwest will never put in the necessary functionality when they can get almost as fast as Comcast with their DSL.

Stupid Qwest. :(

I'm in the same boat as you. I'm sick of cable.

Even though I had my issues with cable, now that I'm on wireless broadband out in the country, I severely miss it. Slightly slower than DSL is not fun.

Same here twiddles thumbs... Verizon DSL 3MB D/768K U gets the job done for the time being. TW Roadrunner available @ 5M D / 384K U but I hate TW Cable they suck. Everyone I know in the area who has it complains about their crap pings on online games... No thanx... Verizon DSL has been good to me through the years...

I'd love to see it in the Minneapolis market, but aparently our current duopoly overlords won't allow it.

Milwaukee (or WI in general), won't see it either even with the "competition bill" (or whatever it was called that was suspiciously funded by AT&T).

Now wait for it........

Now that we can "upload" faster for free, their next "free" introduction will be the limited bandwidth/month charges. Sure you'll get 80GB/Month, but go over and blamo! With faster upload speed you'll just hit your target quicker...
