$474.95 with two year contract

Gizmodo reports Cingular has priced its upcoming 8525 PDA phone at $474.95 with a two year contract. The phone is also expected to have a $50 mail in rebate which brings the price down to $424.95.

Cingular’s 8525 is based on HTC’s TyTN, albeit with Cingular branding and software optimizations. It is powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 with support for various wireless protocols including Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11b/g, GPRS, UMTS and HSDPA. Other notable specifications include a 300 MHz processor, 64MB of RAM and 128MB of ROM. Additionally the Cingular 8525 will have an integrated 2.1MP camera.

Since its new phone season for US cellular providers, T-Mobile has unveiled its “Dash” Smartphone, RIM previously launched its Blackberry 8100 Pearl and HTC unveiled four new phones. Microsoft is also expected to release Windows Mobile Crossbow and Photo in 2007 while Nokia plans to sell WiMAX phones in 2008.

I like seeing more WM smartphones. I have the cingular 8125 and it is a pretty sweet phone. I wish it supported 3G, but at least it has 802.11g.

3G? What are you planning on doing with 3G phones? Only the asian market place has the service to support things like video conference. Japan and Korea. Brands like Nokia/Samsung/Motorola all have 3G phones with almost smartphone like options but they arent sold in the US. You can tell when you buy a phone that doesnt come with the 850 band that it wasnt designed for usage in the USA. Internet websites have imported phones if you just look.

Exactly.

The biggest thing is using my PPC-6700 as a modem for my laptop. In an EVDO area, it's great. I can actually do work.

But it's great just for web browsing. I don't have to wait for 10 seconds for a page to load.

Personally I am looking forward to switching 3G. Though we (North America) are about 6 years late. On the plus side UMTS is 3G / HSDPA 3.5G which was part of the build that the former AT&T wireless (now Cingular) in agreement with Japan's NTT Docomo. Though we never got I-mode, maybe someday we'll catch up with the rest of the world’s upcoming 4G service.

Wow, so much misinformation. Why did you even post?

Who cares about video conferencing? What you want 3G for is fast internet, especially tethering. And unlike EVDO, Cingular's UMTS doesn't make you choose between the internet and voice calls. You can do both at the same time.

(I'm both a Verizon and Cingular customer.)
