This takes impulse buying to a new extreme

In China, the world largest nation and home to over a billion people, the law of statistics indicates that there's likely to be more than a few odd folks.  Perhaps that accounts for such incidents as violence at internet addiction camps, fingerprint removal, and assaults on employees who lose cell phones.  A new incident may earn a place among those -- a Chinese couple has tried to pawn their baby for cell phone cash

The unusual story started off innocently.  Zhang Yao, 19, met the boyfriend surnamed Xin, 21, on the internet and the pair began a whirlwind romance.  Then Ms. Zhang became pregnant and gave birth out of wedlock in November.

Things weren't looking good, though. Neither Zhang nor Xin had steady jobs and they spent most of their time at internet cafes.  The couple claims that they feared they could not raise the child, so they next sold their child to a man named Li Yong.  The couple received 2,500 yuan ($388) for the child.

That's when the story gets particularly strange.  The next day Xin used his “baby money” to buy a cell phone.  Meanwhile police had caught wind of the baby transactions when Li tried to resell the baby for 10,000 yuan ($1,464).  Removing the baby into protective custody at a welfare center, the cops brought all parties involved in for questioning.

Wu Minghui, a police officer in the Longsha district, has told newspapers that the couple both regret their decision and now want to keep the baby.  Zhang reportedly has been crying non-stop over the decision to offload her youngster, and not even the allure of Xin's new cell phone can dull the pain.  Wu says the police are evaluating the requests and are trying to contact the couple's parents.  He states, "We hope that the family can re-unite, and that the baby will be back with his mother soon."

The police are also considering whether to charge Li, Zhang, or Zin.  According to Chinese law in the region, baby selling is illegal.  If there's one piece of good news from the story it's that the baby is safe and according to welfare center workers is healthy, eating well, and is unafraid of strangers.

2-1 odds it wasn't an i-Phone.
10-1 odds it was.

Ouch, that's gonna punch Steve Jobs right in the gut. They can't even get the Chinese to sell their babies to pay for their phones.

Placing money on "non iPhone", mainly because iPhones in China are abount 2.5times what the baby cost. That makes this story even more sad.

Or, maybe it is indeed an iPhone. And people would start to think, Oh noes, Apple products are so overpriced they need to sell their baby to buy it! ;-)

And woke up on April 1st!
Selling babies for cell phones? I bet they were really mad when they found out they could have gotten over $1K instead of $388.

It's EXPECTED of growing nations. They don't have the time and/or luxury that US has had to adjust and take it all in. This isn't the only issue with growing nations. One particularly big one is identity crisis. Growing kids don't know who the fck they should be or want to be and will assume whatever is marketed towards them. For example, Asian people...all of them.

There has got to be a better way to word this. How about human trafficking? Baby selling just sounds so...made up. Unless of course human trafficking is allowed, and only baby selling is illegal.

Actually, Fox5, to my knowledge, neither one is illegal in China, but you know damn well that the underground market is teeming with kids, women, and whole families who are sold outright to make ends meet and there will be people who will go this low for just money or possessions they want. It's really, really sad that society had gotten this low to actually sell a baby. I mean i don't have kids of my own, but I wouldn't even think of even doing this, no matter how bad things got. It's just not human to do so, IMO. - BLUEBOY
