Chevy Volt MPV5 Concept
The Chevy Volt sedan gets a bigger brother

Earlier this week, DailyTech brought you some early information the crossover version of the Volt. Patent drawings of the vehicle were uncovered which gave the general shape of the vehicle. Other than the fact that the vehicle shared its platform with the Volt, not much else was known about the vehicle.

Today, however, General Motors is spilling the beans on the Chevrolet Volt MPV5 Concept. The vehicle looks thoroughly modern and shares a similar design theme up front with the Volt sedan. Out back, the Volt sedan's taillight design is mimicked on the larger Volt MPV5. The Volt MPV5 even carries over the Volt sedan's Apple-esque dashboard fully intact.

"The Volt MPV5 concept takes the efficient design of the Chevrolet Volt and adapts it to the family vehicle crossover segment. It's immediately recognizable as a true member of the Chevrolet family," said Bob Boniface, Director of GM North America Crossover Exterior Design.

Whereas the Volt sedan is seriously compromised in interior room due to a large bulkhead running down the centerline of the vehicle – the bulkhead houses the lithium-ion battery pack -- and is only capable of carrying four people, the Volt MPV5 can carry five people. In addition, the 180.5-inch long vehicle has a 30.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats -- that capacity jumps to 62.3 cubic feet when you fold down the rear seats.

The Volt MPV5 uses the same Voltec powertrain as the Volt sedan which means that there is a 1.4-liter gasoline engine and a 16 kWh battery pack. Due to the additional weight and poorer aerodynamics, the Volt MPV5 is only capable of traveling 32 miles using the battery alone (compared to 40 miles for the Volt sedan). The total driving range once the gasoline engine/generator kicks in is rated at 300+ miles according to GM. Top speed is listed at 100 mph.

"The Volt MPV5 concept demonstrates the flexibility of the Voltec propulsion system, which can produce enough electric power to propel a range of vehicles. from a compact sedan like the Volt to a crossover like the Volt MPV5 concept," said Doug Parks, Global Vehicle Line Executive and Global Vehicle Chief Engineer for Electric Vehicles at GM.

Given America's penchant for crossover vehicles, the Volt MPV5 with its increased people-carrying abilities and vastly superior hauling capabilities may make it an even bigger hit than the original Volt.

Does anyone remember when the Chevy Volt actually looked cool? This new design makes the previous (ugly) design look down-right beautiful.

I'm just waiting for Chevy to continue bloating this product until we have the Volt-burban that gets 12 MPG and can go over 5 miles on battery power only. Or would that be the Humvolt?

I thought the old design looked okay. Crossing the looks of the old volt and a Nissan Cube = FUGLY.

Why not go the other direction and put the powertrain in a Solstice? I might consider buying that. Would be more like the original concept.

Solstice has been discontinued and the factory sold. The Solstice is dead. Deader than dead even given that its parent Pontiac is also gone, not to mention its twin the Sky and its parent Saturn.

But as a Sky owner I'm not sure where you would put the batteries. The trunk is already pretty small, and the glove box isn't much bigger.

Sad but true. That was a great platform, especially in turbocharged trim. I would have definetely looked forward to seeing a refresh on the Sky, in particular. But yeah, attempting to add a huge battery pack to those cars is kind of a "lolwut" situation.

If it was that easy to just slap some batteries in an existing car and instantly get an all-around solid E-REV (serial hybrid), they wouldn't have needed to build the Voltec platform. Either way, I think a serial hybrid is a better (more flexible) choice right now than an all-electric, until we get some seriously improved batteries.

I probably stated that wrong. I was thinking going to a smaller two seater instead of up to a SUV/Crossover. Doesn't have to be the Solstice itself, but along those lines.

If I could afford a new car now I would be looking at the Solstice/Sky because I think those are nice cars. Would prefer and AC Cobra, but these are at least along those lines style wise :)

Well, even your revised idea is still not too hot. First, they still would have to build, design, and sell Volt sedans, etc, before looking at anything else. Then you must consider that this MPV and the Volt are both first-gen Voltec-based vehicles. This first gen does not lend itself well to a sports car version. It was never designed with that in mind. Yes, instead of a sports car, they could make a simple Volt coupe. But it would be just as heavy and almost as large, plus it would eat up production capacity which they'd rather spend on sedans and MPVs. I don't think it would strike a chord with the Volt's target audience either.

A second generation design, also using the Delta II platform, future lighter-weight battery pack, more advanced engine (HCCI? variable geometry turbo?), and an upgraded suspension, could certainly be built into a competent sports coupe/roadster. But not right now. If you want something like that, look at the Fisker Karma. Or if you can live with pure electric, a Tesla roadster.

On the highway the gas generator would be on dumbass. It says in the article it can go 300+ miles total. It's not an all-electric car.

I thought the Volt was ugly...

I used to think it was a good idea to simplify hybrid drive trains by making the motor pure electric with a backup gas generator.

Wow, how GM has proven me wrong....

Can we go back to liquid fuels now?

The point is that it can in fact cover the daily commute for a fair percentage of Americans, albeit not all of them. Meanwhile, unlike the Leaf, it can be used for long distance trips as well. While it might not be a perfect fit for you, the MPV5 will fit the bill for others.

Wait, I am confused.

The Volt or MP5 will likely displace 300+ Gallons of gas a year for average drivers (~12-15,000 miles a year) using a 16 kWh battery. A rate of battery usage that will be hard to meet for pure EVs such as the Leaf, Mini-E, Tesla Roadster, or iMiev. On top of that the design of battery will keep its battery life longer than any of the above?

Yet people like you can't understand this? No wonder we're so fcked up in the US.

I don't mean hit as in sales. I mean as in public opinion and excitement. The Volt is actually pretty well received in the auto enthusiast community. The MPV5 likely will be even more so due to its increased practicality.

Take for example the Camaro coupe concept from a few years ago -- it was a huge hit on the auto show circuit in terms of public opinion. A convertible version of the concept was shown a year later and was even more popular. This was before the first production examples were even produced.

Your posts do, however, with regards to "green" automobiles do come with a political slant though. I'm no mind reader, but your reasoning usually goes something like this:

1) It's a "green" vehicle being pushed by Liberals with an agenda -- Strike 1
2) It's being subsidized to the tune of $7,500 by the federal government; more handouts from Uncle Sam -- Strike 2
3) GM had to be bailed out by the U.S. taxpayers; add this to #2 and we're getting a double whammy -- Strike 3

Does that sound about right?

Our government owns GM. I'm not sure how you could possibly talk about a GM electric vehicle WITHOUT it being "political".

Look I know what you're getting at. You guys just want to feel the love about all the green stuff coming out, because you've been told that it's better. That oil is bad or whatever. You see, I try to keep an open mind about it though. People call the Prius a tree-huggin' hippy-mobile. I call it an efficient way of travel.

My 5-door hatchback gets around 25 mpg in the city, and about 31 mpg on the highway. A Prius gets 50 mpg combined. The Prius also has a larger back seat and carries more cargo. You can't really argue with that.

And I can get a Prius priced at about the same as what I paid for my car. Also, the Prius isn't subsidized (well, not anymore).

I guess my point is, hybrids and all-electrics have their place. I wouldn't damn them all.

The new MPG requirements passed for all automobiles pretty much means that eventually we'll ALL be forced to drive "tree huggin' hippy-mobiles".

Why can't car companies and the consumer, us, decide what kind of cars we make and purchase without the goddamn federal government getting between us at every turn ?? Government subsidies and MPG requirements are NOT fair, because they artificially dictate what cars get made and bought over certain others. It's unacceptable !

I'm just so sick of the governmental intervention into our everyday lives, it's so absurd !!

Hey, you can still buy your Camaros and Mustangs considering that even they can achieve 30 mpg in V6 trim. And Aveos/Cruzes, along with Feistas/Focus' will offset the lower mpg of Camaro SS and Mustang GT models.

To tell you the truth, show me one recent monster HP vehicle that's been killed for anything other than poor sales. I know that we haven't been given some vehicles (like Pontiac G8 Sport Truck, but considering that the G8 was a sales failure and Pontiac folded anyway means that it wouldn't have been a pretty sight).

Moving back to the Camaro, the next generation will get even better. The current one is about 300 pounds to heavy for what it is. The next gen is moving from the platform shared with the Pontiac G8 to the slightly smaller Alpha platform which will underpin the Cadillac ATS. That means a vehicle with better packaging, roughly the same passenger space, tidier exterior dimensions, and lighter weight which should = even better fuel economy.

I like progress :-)

I can't wait to see what the Alpha platform can do. I like the current Camaro, but the Alpha is a much-needed lighter platform. I just hope they can maintain most of the Camaro's characteristics while shedding a bit of weight. The Alpha platform may also replace Zeta and underpin the CTS models too. Cadillac could definitely put the ATS to good use, too. But the platform is years away, either way.

I think it's less than two years away. The concept ATS is supposed to be shown in January at the Detroit auto show. Production model will probably come out fall '11 or early '12.

The next Solstice/Sky was supposed to move to that platform too. It must be light enough for GM to consider it for sports cars. Should be interesting. I really do hope GM can shed a couple hundred pounds from the Camaro. The 2011 Mustang GT is an example of how the Camaro would perform with the weight removed.

I like progress too, just not forced progress. What I find interesting is the wholly unintended side effect of this forced progress is the proliferation of turbo engines. LOL! People think the hp wars are over. Sh!t, they're just beginning. I wonder how much a three year old AMG C63 with the new twin-turbo V8 will cost?? :)

Sorry Brandon. That's nonsense. No one cancels a model because of regulation that was set before the start of development of the model!

CAFE won't kill high performance models outright, it will just cause a business case to price them higher and higher (thus lower sales, thus cancelation). A real proof would be a chart of Cost per Hp over time. If years when CAFE regulations start, Cost per Hp breaks pattern, then CAFE had a definate effect on the sale of high HP cars.

I agree. The government should just butt out of the Middle East. We have wasted trillions of dollars and thousands of lives on that cesspool of humanity. Once we stop pouring all those tax dollars into the region in vain attempts at stabilization OPEC can start adjusting the price of gas up to $10/gallon.

You missed the point. In what dream is the Volt a hit? It's not for sale yet. It has SOME people wanting to buy one. After it's on sale for awhile lets ask the same question. The Volt is not going to be a hit. There will be some who will want one, the iPad, then the sales will fall.
How can you say the hybrids are SO wanted by the car buyers? I'd rather have the Fiesta. At least it runs on gas and gets over 40mpg! Hybrids are never going mainstream.
