Chevrolet Volt

Motorola Droid Volt App  (Source: Autoblog)
App uses the OnStar communications network, iPhone demo app will be available shortly

Many of the big car manufacturers in America are hard at work on electric and hybrid vehicles to help reduce fuel consumption and help the environment. One of the most talked about and anticipated of the new electric vehicles is the Chevy Volt.

In December 2009, word surfaced that there would be an application for the iPhone and Blackberry phone that would interface with the Volt to allow the user control over when the car charges and to offer other information about the vehicle. The BlackBerry and Motorola Droid applications have now been unveiled with full pictures and information.

The app is from GM/OnStar and reportedly looks very similar to the instrument panel on the Volt. The app is the first to use the OnStar communications infrastructure to allow the driver to monitor the car's battery pack. The app will allow direct control over the vehicle and will allow the driver to check the current state of the vehicle charge and to set up automatic notifications.

The notifications will be a good thing for forgetful drivers as they can be set to remind you to plug the car in to charge. The vehicle will know if it is plugged and will not send the reminder is already connected. The app can also be set to notify the driver if their car becomes unplugged for any reason such as in a power outage.

Using the app the car can also be set to charge at grid-friendly times when the rates for electricity are at their lowest. In warm or cold climates, the ability to use the app to precondition the car for comfort is a great feature. This will allow drivers in the 105-degree Texas summers to cool the car off while it is plugged in to save battery power. The iPhone app demo will reportedly be available tomorrow. The images here are for the Motorola Droid app.

Is society really at the point that you need your phone to remind you (essentially) how much gas you have?

Is society really at a point where people can't understand small feature lists?

Seriously though

#1 Benifit- "Is my car pluged in?"
#2 Benifit- Reminder to Plug-in Car using DATA network rather than Text Message
#3 Benifit- Remotely Change Charge Times
#4 Benifit- Infinate Range "Panic Button"
#5 Benifit- Infinate Range Remote Start
#6 Benifit- Infinate Range Remove Lock

All of these seem pretty neat features and when bundled together has significant value

Yeah yeah, but #3-10 can be applied to any vehicle that has Onstar.

Let me add #11 Benefit - Ability to do live streaming from an IP camera within the car to the phone. This would have many uses.

The title of the article is, "Chevy Volt BlackBerry, Motorola Droid Apps Gets Official"

That looks like a Motorola Droid phone to me...

Lord 666 is correct. The title was fixed.

Many newer onstar vehicles have a way to cut power to the engine over the onstar network, so far there haven't been any problems because that network is pretty secure. The same is also generally true of the cell phone network, assuming they are properly encrypting the data stream to and from the phone.
