Happy days may be at an end for heavy cell phone users. Doctors have identified an ailment which afflicts people holding their arms in bent position for long periods of time, for example during cell phone conversations. The result is potentially lasting nerve damage and loss of dexterity.  (Source: The Phone Coach)
New cell phone-related affliction can do more than just cause discomfort, it can cause lasting damage

Cell phones have been accused of causing cancer before, and of lowering fertility thanks to their heat levels.  However, doctors worldwide are reporting a less sensational, but potentially far more dangerous affliction striking users worldwide.  Scientist are dubbing the new disease "cell phone elbow", a use injury similar perhaps to Wii-itis, but with the potential to cause long term damage.

According to doctors, when you bend your elbow to hold your cell phone to your ear, you stretch a nerve which extends underneath the funny bone and controls the smallest fingers.  According to Dr. Peter J. Evans, the director of the Hand and Upper Extremity Center at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, long chats can "(choke) the blood supply to the nerves. It makes the nerves short-circuit. The next thing you know, there's tingling in the ring and small finger."

Doctors are advising users who experience such tingling sensations to switch hands and, if possible, cut back on their use.  The alternative is to risk long term damage to your nerves.  The disorder officially goes by the name cubital tunnel syndrome, and its victims have troubled opening jars and performing other dexterous activities, such as playing musical instruments.

Dr. Evans wards, "It could impede your typing ability, your writing ability.  People get very unintelligible writing if it gets severe.'

Donna Malloy, 66, reported on CNN.com that she suffered from the disease.  She states, "Mainly when I was holding something, I noticed, 'Geez, they're tingling.'  It got progressively worse. If you walk around holding the cell phone, after a while you're not sure you have it in the hand anymore.  I thought: 'I'm turning old and falling apart.'"

Dr. Leon Benson, an orthopedic surgeon and spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says patients like Ms. Malloy aren’t necessarily falling apart, rather they're putting too much stress on their ulnar nerve.  In time this stress can lead to permanent damage.  Reiterates Dr. Evans, "The more you bend it, the more it stretches.  It diminishes the blood supply, and the blood is not flowing through the nerves."

Dr. Benson adds that the injury isn't as common as carpal tunnel syndrome and can be avoided with a bit of common sense.  He states, "It's like anything else, any sporting activity.  You can hit balls at the driving range -- just don't hit 300 of them, because you'll be sore. So common sense would dictate not to talk on the phone for hours if your small and ring fingers go numb."

The affliction can also strike heavy computer users and truckers, both of which tend to hold their arms in a bent position when performing their work.

There's these things called "hands-free devices"...Google it. You'll love me for it.

That will be $200, thanks.

I knew I should've been a doctor.

But then you will start to get nerve damage from taking the headset on and off.

I got a better solution...
"Get off the phone!"

Never heard of people complaining of phone elbow issues back in the "wired" days. People either talk too much or just looking for something else to complain about...

So that's what all those people on the schizophrenia ward are doing...having phone conversations? Instead of Haldol, we just need to tell them to get off the damn phone!

Have you ever used a hands-free device or witnessed their use in public? Not clowning, I'm asking seriously.

I live in a big city where everyone has them and there are none of these prolific issues of which you are fearful.

Unless I am in my car I do not use my blutooth handsfree device. As the OP mentioned, not everyone has a purse to carry the thing around in. I've also seen many people break their hands free devices by leaving them in their pockets.

In other words you probably have to keep it in your ear (which I don't really see as an option), and mark my words 5 years from now you will be reading the same kind of study showing the ill effects of constantly having a blutooth device next to your brain, low frequency or not..

Of course the easiest way to solve all your problems is stop wasting your life on a cell phone.

One of the reasons I prefer wired headsets to bluetooth. Saves battery, and you're just getting audio-frequency EM radiation instead of RF into your brain. And yes, I usually grab my headset if I know I'm in for a long call (lots of conference calls...) - handsfree is more than just a convenience...

If everyone looks and sounds like a blathering idiot, then nobody does...

hey, isn't there supposed to be a Tooth-phone? For those with a missing tooth or two, they can fit a phone in there... its hands free, an idiotic thing in yer ear. But you'll still be talking toyouself and get more radiation in your head.

People will sign up for that!

I've heard it said, and said it myself:

In 50 years, the old folks homes will be filled with senior citizens that have tattoos and piercings galore, with arthritic elbows and thumbs, rendering them incapable of even the simple act of feeding themselves!

Honestly, can you imagine your grandmother with a tramp stamp?? [shudders]

maybe we should stop using cellphones so much. i mean seriously, we used to get along fine without constantly talking to someone. are people really that scared of being alone with their own thoughts? plus movies were so much cooler when people couldn't just call eachother on a cellphone when they were in trouble.

Ya know, my friend and I were just having that discussion. And one of the really weird things is that we couldn't think of any movies made in the 70's or 80's that were supposed to be set way into the future that thought of cell phones. Many of them would have been completely ruined.

Hardly limited to cell phones so the title is absurdly misleading.

Definitely not a new condition so it can't be said to be just "beginning".

When I can't get past the headline without spotting blatant inaccuracies in your article, I don't put much faith in anything that follows.

What is another device you hold in that position for prolonged periods of time? I would say, this is due to cell phones. I am sure "tennis elbow" was around before tennis, but it had to have a name.

I've actually had some numbness and tingling issues in my ring and little fingers for several years, and I am hardly a heavy cell user (about 500 minutes a month). I do use a computer a lot so I suppose that could be a factor too.

I don't know about other people but when something on my body goes numb, I tend to figure out what I'm doing to cause it and then stop doing it. :)

How obsessed with your conversation do you have to be to go: "uh, my fingers are numb... but screw it, I'm going to keep right on talking"?

Ever had Tennis Elbow? While my injury was the result of Soccer, I never thought anything of it until it was too late. Its not usually something that happens over the short term either, it can take years to develop and years to get rid of.

RE: I don't know about other people...
By Luticus on 6/2/2009 7:37:26 PM , Rating: 2
Nope, never had that... could be that I'm only 25... :)

I know some things can have long "incubation periods" as I’ll put it, but I think "cell phone elbow" is just a tad preventable. Good point though. :D

I call BS

Two reasons:

1) Computer related Carpel-Tunnel Syndrome was the big thing in the 90’s and has largely been debunked. This is the same deal - I can’t picture the elbow being this delicate.

2) Jason Mick wrote it, so it’s probably full of omissions, misquotes, and misleading statements.

RE: I call BS

Its just Tennis Elbow from extended cell phone use. Extended/repetitive stress of any muscle in the body can result in the described symptoms.

Sure the article is filled with some pretty obvious information, but apparently it was not dubbed down enough for some people.. nudge nudge..
