Canon unveils its 10.1MP D-SLR

Not to be outdone my Nikon's recent announcement of the D80, Canon has fired back with its own new D-SLR offering. Canon looks to have a winner on their hands with this significant upgrade to the popular Canon Rebel XT.

Canon's new Digital Rebel XTi features a 10.1MP CMOS sensor (up from 8MP on the Digital Rebel XT) with a 1.6x conversion ratio, 9-point autofocus, a 230k pixel 2.5" LCD monitor (up from 1.8") and the exclusive EOS Integrated Cleaning System (ICS). With the ICS, the CMOS sensor is attached to ultrasonic vibrating device that shakes dust particles off onto a sticky surface. Once attached, the particles are prevented from once again becoming airborne.

The Digital Rebel XTi has a startup time of just 0.2 seconds and features a continuous shooting speed of 3 FPS. At max burst, it can capture 27 JPEG images, 10 RAW images or 8 RAW+JPEG images. And for those of you that are wondering, Canon has stuck with CompactFlash cards for the XTi. Rival Nikon made the switch to Secure Digital with its D80.

According to Canon, the Digital Rebel XTi will be available in September and priced at $799 for the body only and $899 for the body and 18-55mm kit lens. For a more in-depth look at the Digital Rebel XTi, you can take a look at Imaging Resource’s preview.

The Silver 400D with the black BG-E3 grip looks very awkward.

Looks kinda cheap. But cant go wrong with a Canon, personally I prefer Nikon.

Rebel XT?

What does this mean for the Digital Rebel XT? Are they going to lower the price, remove it from the lineup, or just leave it alone?

The same thing that the XT meant for the original Rebel. Remaining stock on the Rebel XT will probably see a slight price drop until all remaining inventory is cleared. Then you will only be able to get the XTi after that.

I just picked up an XT from Newegg - incredible camera - I've got no complaints.

What about...

Battery life? Does the LCD upgrade mean it will suck down batteries faster?

I have a Canon Rebel EOS SLR, it is the 35mm one :)

I love it.

Its a similar screen as to whats on a 5D and the 30D and they don't seem to adversely affect battery life.

It'll be interesting to see what this does to 30D sales now the XTi/400D has a bigger sensor as there are plenty of people out there who think 'more megapixels = better camera'.

And I can't help but think the anti-dust thing will just be a gimmick. The biggest problem with sensor contamination is stuff that sticks like pollen and I can't see how this ultrasonic mechanism will get that kind of thing off.

I have had the Rebel XT for a year and a half and the things I hate about it are.

The viewfinder. Wonder if this one is any better. Mine has cheap distorted mirrors in it. The actual viewfinder is tiny.

I see this on has a 2.5" 230k pixel LCD. That is great. Mine is a 1.8" 118k pixel LCD. Canon cameras have always been terrible with LCDs until recently.

I have had a Digital rebel XT since last fall. I have to say that I love it. Although it is a little hard to clean. I like the way the new exclusive cleaning systems sounds. That is very innovative in my opinion.

I had a canon powershot A50 before the digital rebel. I left it on top of my car when leaving a vacation site and it fell off onto the road at 45 Mph!!! Well guess what, even though the camera had been badly damaged it stil continued to work with some emergency engineering modifications.

I think canons are the best camera out there for the money.

Here is my site that I post my pictures to. Most are with the Digital Rebel XT.

some of these were shot with the A50 after the "accident" :)
