Entry-level Rebel XS will sell for under $700

Last year I finally gave up on trying to get good pictures of my kids playing soccer and generally doing anything where my old point-and-shoot camera had to focus fast and use a fast shutter speed. Every time I tried to shoot fast action pictures, I ended up with nothing but an elbow or a foot in the frame because the shutter just wasn’t fast enough.

I decided to upgrade to a D-SLR camera and have never looked back. If you are in the same boat and want to upgrade to a D-SLR camera, but want to get in at the low-end of the DSLR spectrum Canon has finally announced pricing on its Canon Rebel XS entry-level DSLR.

We talked about the Rebel XS back in early June, when pricing was a guessing game. Canon announced today that the Rebel XS will retail for $699.99. For that price you get the camera body and the kit EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. The lens is also available separately for $199.99.

Canon also announced a new flash to go along with the Rebel XS called the Canon Speedlite 430EX II. The flash promises a 20% faster recycle time compared to the 430EX. The flash will retail for $329.99.

I think XS should settle down at $500 for body, XSi for $700, 40D for $900 and 5D for $1200.

haha, nothing compared to the amount you will spend on lenses.

you would be surprised at the amount of people that buy entry level slr's and only stick with the kit lenses (18-55 / 50-200mm)

Canon has a real winner with their new 18-55 IS entry level lens. It's sharper in tests than my 17-40 f/4 L. True the construction is plastic and it suffers from barrel distortion and vignetting, but this is a $200 lens out-resolving a $700 lens.
