Macworld dealt yet another blow

In mid-December, DailyTech reported that Macworld 2009 would mark Apple's last appearance at the show. Macworld has been the traditional breeding ground for new Apple product announcement with the iPhone and MacBook Air being two of the most recent reveals.

A month later, news began to circulate that Apple's absence from Macworld meant an open invitation from CEA which orchestrates the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. CES is usually home to big names in the tech industry with companies like Microsoft, Intel, Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba commanding a large presence.

CEA is now announcing a surprising turn of events which may end up dealing a crippling blow to Macworld next year according to Engadget. CEA announced last week that it would setup an iLounge Pavilion during the CES 2010 show which would provide 4,000 sq. ft. of floor space for iPod/iPhone accessory makers in South Hall 2.

Since announcing the iLounge Pavilion last week, CEA has sold out the original 4,000 sq. ft. to vendors and has plans to quadruple the size of the iLounge Pavilion to at least 18,000 sq. ft. to accommodate additional Mac developers and retailers.

"We have received an incredible response from companies interested in exhibiting in the iLounge Pavilion at the 2010 International CES," said Karen Chupka, CEA's senior vice president of events and conferences. "This exciting new CES Pavilion brings momentum to the consumer technology industry and reinforces the International CES as the global hub for the latest innovative technologies."

Time will tell what this means for Macworld 2010, but things don't look so good with the larger draw of CES and no backing from heavy-hitter Apple for a show that is dedicated to its products.

What does Microsoft have to do with anything?

They happen to compete with Apple.

Compete how? Since Apple will never open up their operating system to other PC manufacturers nor come out with a realistic price nor pricing setup, the only thing Apple will compete with is with other phones and mp3 players. Their computers sell well, but not nearly enough to be considered as a threat by HP, Dell, Asus etc., let alone Microsoft.

listing off products from two companies does not mean they compete with each other. From what you've listed we can determine

iPod<-->Zune
iPhone<--> WinMobile... sort of but not really.
by process of elimination that gives us appleTV<-->XboX

... I'm afraid the only valid comparison I see is iPod vs. Zune my friend. All the others are based off very shady logic overlooking some basic points.

When Macs become a viable platform for PC gaming, I might take a look at them. Currently, their computers lack the video cards, let alone the games to even bother.

And honestly, I can't justify spending more than a grand on a PC that will be obsolete in a few years, so they'll have to open up the platform and let me build my own box as well.

but you can buy them in blueberry! come on!

who cares about all this tech mumbo jumbo when you can do that!!
/sarcasm

How about more than just games, any software portion at all. For the most part, any major Sofware developer that's not adobe is usually a version or 2 behind on whats available for the mac vs pc. EVERYTHING is later to market if even made available. I wouldn't want to spend a high dollar sum on a machine treated with low priority.

That may be true, but you must admit that there are a lot more windows-only apps than mac-only apps. If you don't need Final Cut or Aperture in the first place, then it's irrelevant that they won't work in Windows. There are a hell of a lot more Windows programs that won't run on Mac than vice versa. Granted, there is a version of wine for OS X, but from what I've read, it isn't quite up to par with the linux version, though I have yet to test that myself.

Not an argument in the modern world of console gaming, supported by Microsoft by the way (ever heard of Xbox?)

Like nVidia GeForce 8800 is not a video card. Are you sick?

Same is true for any Windows PC, so moot point again.

Hackintosh and Mac Pro are made just for that, enjoy. Not that it would help your sickness anyway.

Pirks is right, Macs can use some good video cards (8800gt) and are a viable platform for PC gaming. It's only OS X that can't do games, and it's easy enough to install Windows on a Mac. Of course, since the Mac hardware is more expensive, if you really want to use OS X, I personally recommend just installing OS X on a PC.

I'm sorry. I missed the part where Apple sells it's OS or other software for use in any system other than their own.
Mindless sheep.

Never seen QuickTime and iTunes for Windows? Mindless sheep indeed.

Pirks, no matter how many statements you make to justify the features of a macintosh, you are just convincing us you made a worthless purchase on a machine and you want other people to make the same mistake you made.

Sure macintosh has aperature, but adobe also has lightroom, witch totally makes that arguement M00t.

Sad that you mention that Quicktime and itunes is manufactured for windows, for free *cough*

Its pretty easy to obtain a standard windows pc, vs a macintosh, when it all boils down to it, cheap platform +expensive software = money wisely spent
Expensive platform + expensive software = money wasted.

Pirks, quit trolling.

I never purchased a Mac. Quit lying about me please.

Cheapo Chevy Cavalier + cheapo gas = well spent money, and Saab 9-3 + premium gas = wasted money. Right. Enjoy your idiocy, zombie.

Apple wants to go mainstream
By trisct on 1/29/2009 2:25:19 PM , Rating: 3
Perhaps Macworld is too much of a small, insulated community. It might seem to be for Apple disciples only, and Apple wants to be seen as a consumer electronics and media company first, and push "Mac" to second or third priority. They are looking to expand their audience beyond the faithful, which will remain faithful anyhow, and putting their resources into a mainstream trade show instead of the Macworld Mecca for the true believers is a good way to do that.

Big whoop

Cool. Now instead of having 50 million vendors displaying the exact same Apple accessories dispersed across the entire show floor, we can have 100 million vendors displaying the exact same Apple accessories in a convenient, centralized location.

I'm pumped.
