CEA wants to host an E3-like gaming event on the west coast in 2007

The Electronic Entertainment Expo gaming convention is going to be drastically scaled back next year, so alternative events are being researched by a number of different organizers.  The Consumer Electronics Association, known for being the owner and producer of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, has announced its interested in possibly arranging a gaming and entertainment event on the west coast next year.  The organization is forming an advisory committee that will ask the gaming industry for feedback about a west coast event.  A reported 11 percent (17,800) of attendees at the 2006 CES showed interest in video games and gaming products.

The CEA is now searching for venues in Las Vegas and Los Angeles sometime in May, which is traditionally when E3 was held in Los Angeles.  The CEA will continue looking into how beneficial it would be to launch a new version of E3.

Gary Shapiro, president and CEO of CEA, claims “Since ESA decided to eliminate the E3 event in its known format, we have been deluged with inquiries on whether we could fill the tradeshow needs of smaller video entertainment companies."

The "E3 Interactive Media Festival" will be an event that has 7,000 attendees meeting in a hotel rather than the monstrous Los Angeles Convention Center.  Along with the venue change, the new E3 will also be held sometime in July instead of May -- lowering the costs for companies attending the event.

It defeats the purpose of scaling back E3 if it's just replaced with some other event. I'd rather see games come out earlier, better, and cheaper than to have a big event where they cram everything in, though I must admit I enjoyed it. It's just too much of a cost to developers.

you know, I wish cars would start being more fuel efficient, faster, stronger, safer, cheaper, and lighter... I think we both have about the same odds of seeing our wishes come to fruition.

Nice. I think it's highly probable cars will be all those things in the future... out of necessity.

The purpose of E3 being scaled back was because it was no longer an industry trade show. Something that was the original aim of E3. What the CEA is proposing is a completely different show with a completely different aim. One being a show catering to the public where the games company can show off what they have to the public.

What some forget is that there are many small developers heading to E3 in the hopes of landing a publisher and with the hoopla of E3 it's kind of hard to do something like that. I'm sure there are also a lot of closed door conferences and discussions going on as well in E3.

Regardless

Regardless of E3's revamping, it can only be for the better.
Now there's no more chaos and "I have the biggest HDTV screen!111!!!!11"
Now its going to be down to bussiness stuff. That the public actually enjoys reading about--devlopment in games of our favorite platforms.

Now we'll be hearing less about the chaos that went on at E3 and more about the meat: the games and the hardware.

No we won't. We'll only hear about games from huge companies like EA, and won't hear about groundbreaking games from smaller developers and publishers.

But hopefully (and ironically) the CEA can replace E3. I can see a time when E3 becomes irrelevant again, and basically the CES replaces it.

So you're saying the game floor was dominated by smaller game companies and EA was there all mellow in the corner eh?
If anything, this will give smaller game comapnies a chance to exhibit their games in a more professional manner.
it won't be:
"I have the biggest Wide HD TV Screen blasting off my game; I mustam the press winner"

What small companies need as a video game version of the Cannes film festival.

A small developer game conferences that allows smaller companies to pool their resources to show off potential titles with less cost and with more press coverage then it would be possible by any individual small developer operating by itself.

E3

This new incarnation of E3 is sounding more and more like the casual gamers' haven. Hopefully this E3 will help the market take off without creating the one-upmanship that the previous one created.

Hey you guys are lucky, down here in South Africa we got nothing E3, just our little Rage convention but it's still no E3. Be happy with that so called chaotic convention, cause I would not PLAY around there.
