Use your netbook on the Shinkansen

Yahoo Tech is reporting that Japanese bullet trains (Shinkansen) will begin offering Wi-Fi internet services in March. Bullet trains are extremely fast trains that connect all of Japan’s major urban centers. Travel via these transportation systems is very fast, comfortable, and efficient offering many benefits to passengers.

NTT Communications will offer Wi-Fi services on the new N700-type bullet trains that offer the fastest train travel services between Japan's two largest cities of Tokyo and Osaka. The distance is roughly 341 miles and takes about three hours. The Wi-Fi internet service will be an extension of the company's HotSpot service, which offers internet access in places such as stores, restaurants, hotels, libraries and other locations across Japan for a monthly fee.

Connection speeds of roughly 2Mbps (bits per second) will be possible through the service, which will be provided by a wire travelling alongside the bullet train track from which signals can be sent and received wirelessly. NTT Communications will also launch Wi-Fi internet access in waiting lounges on all 17 stations along the route.

The service will be charged at the current standard HotSpot rate, which ranges from 500 Yen ($5.73USD) per day to 1,680 Yen ($19.25USD) for a monthly subscription.

Plans for a wireless internet service on bullet trains were first announced in 2006 but were held back until the new N700 trains were launched to avoid retrofitting of older trains with the Wi-Fi technology.

Due to fact Japan is crowded and space is at a premium netbooks have naturally begun to gain popularity.  Offering services that complement this trend appears to be a wise move by NTT as demand for internet access will only grow as the population of netbook users increases.

As you travel towards an internet hub point your internet speed picks up and as you travel away from this point it slows down... It's a lot of work for the internet to catch a speeding train.

But the theory of relativity says it stays at the same speed no matter how fast you are going.

Oh wait that might have been light.

Well, we could use Fiber cable. However that could get complex....

both radio waves and light waves propagate at 3.0 x 10^8 meter's per second, because they are both part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Lol yes and please bling bling the front of the train since it looks like an ugly platypus.

Wouldn't this....

I'd assume it'd be better to put this service on a slow service. Like the slow long distance trains.

Yes and no. Some bus lines here in Copenhagen offer free internet(through wifi) and while I never use them I can see the point for some. Not so much for surfing as the trips to short but it will let you update your mailbox on the way to work and so on. Basically for some even a shot burst of internet helps them satisfy the need to be on-line :-)
