Amazon is selling a Sylvania Blu-ray player for $59.99

I'll keep this one short and sweet. It's not very often that we cover "hot deals", because there are plenty of deal sites out that like Slickdeals or Fatwallet that are specifically tailored to handle such topics. However, this one is simply to hot to not pass along to regular DailyTech readers.

Amazon currently has the Sylvania NB530SLX Bu-ray player for $59.99 with free shipping. The NB530SLX is just your standard run of the mill player which means that you won't get DivX support or BD-Live capabilities, but you can't really complain for $60.

Sure they are cheap now that they are obsolete

They'll be giving them away now that 3D Blue Ray players coming out making everybody have to upgrade again for another $300+. It's all part of the master plan.

Seriously? I don't think 3D will make current players obsolete. The vast majority of video is and will not be, 3D.

Anyway, this is about the hardware of blu-ray going down in price, finally. 3D blu-ray will be cheap too, soon enough.

Not only that, but 3D TV/player may actually never become widespread household item. HD took how long to penetrate the market? 3D has huge problems of content and need for glasses and only works from certain position in the room.

On the other hand if 3D glasses already cost $200-300, why not build in OLEDs in them to get real 3D? No TV to buy and you could watch them anywhere. And problem with sound will be solved as well as no huge speakers will be needed, just ear pieces. Pair it with Netflix instant kind of service and WiMAX network. Standalone TVs and players and discs will be gone.

last time I checked glasses dropped to between $100-$200,

not that these are 3D, but with mainstream adoption, I don't see why the 3D version should be any more expensive, all you need is two separate video feeds.

The next leap in technology is to combine 3D video glasses with the Gyroscope in the emotiv Epoch and run a first person video game. True VR for under $1000 :)

I doubt the market for 3D Blu-Ray Players will be substantial for a sustained period of time.

Anyway, don't the old Blu-Ray Players lack a lot of online / extra features?

At sixty bucks, who cares? This (was) a great way to get people to jump into Blu-Ray, and once you're hooked they can always sell you an upgraded player with wireless/BD-Live/3D later.

Get what you pay for

I remember getting an inexpensive DVD player back in the mid to late 90s. I constantly had to unplug and plug back in the power cord (restart it) to get it to work. I'm sure electronics have improved since then, but be aware.

Funny, I have to do that now with my 5 yr old, not so cheap 5 disk Sony DVD player. Go figure.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I bought a $30 DVD player when I started college, eventually it got moved from my bedroom to the living room apartment because my roommates had gone through two $200 players in a 6 month time period. Now, I use my PS3, but it still worked when I replaced it 6 years after I bought it.

Also had the added bonus of playing... 'backups' without fail, something the more expensive players often wouldn't do.

Same for the people who got ripped off by buying Monster Cable brand.

BD penetration

The BD consortium lost alot of money on their journey to market infiltration. It wasn't anything like the VHS to DVD conversion. Now that BD and HD have more market penetration I don't think we'll see the adoption of 3D-HD anytime soon.
