Bluetooth 3.0 will bring Bluetooth over Wi-Fi

Bluetooth has become one of the most used wireless connectivity specifications used in all sorts of devices wireless printing and streaming music from MP3 players to headphones. Like most things in the technology world, researchers are always working hard to improve the specification.

Dvice reports that Bluetooth 3.0 specifications are due to be released from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group on April 21. The specification promises to deliver more speed than Bluetooth 2.0/2.1 is capable of today along with other feature aimed at making Bluetooth more usable and reliable.

The Bluetooth SIG says, "Transferring an entire music library, a complete DVD, a vacation's worth of photos, all within seconds at the touch of a button and wirelessly will now be possible."

One new feature of Bluetooth 3.0 will be called Enhanced Power Control (EPC) designed to reduce the incidence of disconnects caused by things like placing a phone in your pocket. The specification will also allow Generic Alternate MAC/PHY (AMP) enabling Bluetooth profiles to take advantage of 802.11 speeds and will allow the Generic AMP to be used with an 802.11 radio.

In other words, this is the specification for allowing Bluetooth over Wi-Fi, which is where the massive speed increases will come from.

if in essence this is a 'Bluetooth over WiFi' solution, even at wifi speeds a complete DVD wouldn't be transferred 'within seconds'..
well that is quite a claim.

Not really. They never said HOW MANY seconds. Lawyers got 'em covered on this one. :-)

indeed
also i wonder how exactly they are going to implement this. Like is there a transmitter in the device as well as the "radio" and wouldn't this cause problems if there is an existing wireless access point on the same band nearby?
whatever the technical situation might be I hope that they don't compromise reliability and ease of use and the all important size factor just for a speed increase.

I can fly to Hawaii in a matter of seconds, 12400 seconds to be exact.

Anywhere is walking distance if you have the time.

What'll happen if you are maintaining an 802.11 wi fi connection and then set up a device to use this new bt standard?

I guess both of your communications will at least be slowing down each other to some extent.

I doubt it. There are multiple wireless networks where I live and they don't slow down much. I get over 1.2MB/s transfers wirelessly to my FTP on my server. I doubt the introduction of blue tooth will slow anything down.

With BT over WiFi, BT is basically running it's Discovery and various higher-level protocols over the top of the WiFi radio and protocol instead of on top of the native BT radio and native BT MAC-level protocol. So they are sharing bandwidth.

I hope they've made provision to add some cool new user friendly functionality to this new version. I think one thing that would be cool with bluetooth devices (since they tend to be cell phones and mp3 players and such) is if you could "easily" setup little secured and unsecured ad hoc networks, so that for example you could easily beam someone you were in close proximity to with a picture or song or video or your busines card or a document. Not everyone has email or texting on their device and also that can be a protracted process if you just met someone while walking to work and are trying to give her your info or trade a cool song or something.
By the time you drill down through the menus to start broadcasting, and she "finds" your device and all that stuff, all she is going to remember about you is that she missed two trains and made her late for dinner.
(i realize you can use the other card beamer but it would be cool to have it all in bluetooth along with some modest and easily accessible file sharing capabilities)
