The WoW experience, available soon on your cell phone?
Guild chat and auction house status, soon on your cell phone?
During the wrap-up for the recent 2008 D.I.C.E. (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) Summit, Blizzard co-founder and executive vice-president of product development Frank Pearce was sharing some future insight into the ever-expanding World of Warcraft.
One of the tidbits of information that got the most raised eyebrows was the announcement of the "Blizzard Mobile Team" -- but hopes for a full-fledged World of Warcraft experience on a hand-held platform was quickly squashed by Pearce. "We want to look at the mobile devices as something we can use to
enhance the experience of our existing games. So we're going to have to
look at ways to use the mobile device to enhance their 'World of
Warcraft' experience."
Pearce mentioned the possibility of an IM-style link to guild chats, in-game mail, and auction house monitoring. "We probably wouldn't allow you to actually buy or sell via the mobile device, but you could certainly monitor."
In addition to giving the ten-million-plus current WoW users yet another avenue for connecting to the world of Azeroth, Blizzard is hard at work on content for the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, and a method to stream a trial version to prospective new clients in as little as ten minutes.
Finally, the sights have been set on another popular fantasy world -- the World of Warcraft movie is actively seeking directors, and Uwe Boll will not be making the cut, if the standards of Blizzard are to be taken seriously. "When we talk about the quality of our movie and the quality of the
movie we want to see delivered, we're talking about the 'Lord of the
Rings' trilogy," said Pearce. "That's what we want to deliver, that kind of epic
experience."
"If they're going to pirate somebody, we want it to be us rather than somebody else." -- Microsoft Business Group President Jeff Raikes
