Classic RTS gameplay to be revitalized with StarCraft II, coming to PC and Mac

After months of speculation on what Blizzard’s next big title will be, it was revealed today at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational in South Korea that StarCraft would indeed be getting a sequel. StarCraft II was announced in front of thousands of attendees at the special event, who received a presentation that included a StarCraft II cinematic trailer and a gameplay demonstration by the development team.

Rather than go down the massively multiplayer route that Blizzard’s fantasy world has gone, StarCraft II is designed to follow in the footsteps of the original – to be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game. In addition to the requisite online play through Battle.net, StarCraft II will include a single-player campaign. In addition, the game will come with the same map editing tools used by Blizzard’s designers so users can create new maps.

StarCraft II will feature the return of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races, overhauled and re-imagined with several new units and new game play mechanics. The single-player campaign is to pick up where StarCraft: Brood War left off, though Blizzard was tight-lipped on revealing any part of the new story.

While Blizzard has created a 3D engine system for Warcraft III, and to an even greater extent for World of Warcraft, the developer says that StarCraft II will feature a custom 3D graphics and physics engine with the ability to handle “several large, highly detailed units and massive armies on-screen simultaneously.”

“With StarCraft II, we’ll be able to do everything we wanted to do with the original StarCraft and more,” stated Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We recognize that expectations are high following the long-running popularity of the original game, but we plan to meet those expectations and deliver an engaging, action-packed, competitive experience that StarCraft players and strategy gamers worldwide will enjoy.”

No release date came with the announcement, but Blizzard did confirm StarCraft II will simultaneously release on Windows and Macintosh PC platforms. Despite recent successful efforts by other RTS franchises to move to home consoles, Blizzard says it has “no current plans to bring the game to any console platform.” Further information about the game, including details on the single-player, multiplayer, map-editor features and system requirements will be announced in the months ahead. Screenshots, trailers and other media can be found on the official StarCraft II website.

Although Blizzard is a U.S.-based game developer, the StarCraft franchise is unquestionably the most popular amongst gamers in South Korea – a likely reason for the location of the announcement. According to the Korea Times, nearly 4 million copies of the original StarCraft have been sold in Korea alone since its debut in 1998, making up about 42 percent of its global sales of 9.5 million copies.

I have the same, DPI is the key. Up the DPI in display properties then tweak your title bars and icon font sizes and hay presto. Only down side is some web page images dont scale too well.... My laptop is my lifesaver when I go on an install abroad. The extra productivity I get from those pixels is invaluable. I just sit nice and close to the screen when working ;-)

Diablo fan should stop whining in every SCII related news/info. Starcraft deserved it since the fan and everyone wait 3 years longer (brood war was released in 1998 vs Diablo 2: LoD in 2001) and SC rightfully deserved it first!

a must buy and pre-order but, knows Blizzard so well, I know that it might be delayed until 2009, lol

As much as I would like to see a Diablo III, I have reason to doubt that that game might never see the light of day. The main reason is the fact that Blizzard North, the developers of the Diablo series, has closed down. Half of the members who were key in the Diablo franchise started their own company, Flagship Studios. The other half formed Castaway Entertainment. If you want to play a Diablo-esque game anytime soon, I'd definitely look into Hellgate: London; everything about it screams Diablo, except it's more futuristic.

Somebody is up on their knowledge of what's going on with Diablo III. I agree the closest thing we will see is Hellgate: London. It's going to be third person though.

It's looking like my dreaming is coming true though. I wanted to play SC2 with the same (i think it's called isometric .. could be wrong) angle and from the screen shots it's looking like it's the same.

Just to be technical...

Isometric refers to a 3d view where parallel lines stay parallel and objects do not shrink as they get farther away. Clearly most sprite-based pseudo-3d games (like the original SC) used an isometric view, simply because it was technically easier to implement than a real 3d view. It's not gameplay important, and probably isn't what you meant in your post.

I think the camera angle you are refering to doesn't have a really technical term for it other than maybe calling it "bird's eye view"

i think its going to be like wc3 where you can edit the camera angle as well as playing from the original "birds eye view".

I was told by someone who had family who worked there that they were working on Diablo 3 before they closed Blizzard North down and moved the workforce to Blizzard HQ.

And from a currently employed source I was told that they are working on all 3 IP, but I don't know if that means WC4 or just WoW for the Warcraft IP.

The official story: "We'd definitely like to revisit the Diablo universe in the future, but we haven't announced any plans to do so at this time."--Blizzard rep.

RE: OMG
By AzureKevin on 5/19/2007 8:21:35 PM , Rating: 1
I've read that before. However, the story with Blizzard North is that they were actually their own company, Condor, before Blizzard bought them and renamed them to Blizzard North. Blizzard bought Condor only six months before they released Diablo, so I'd imagine that Condor had been working on Diablo before Blizzard bought them out. Although Blizzard owns the Diablo IP, all of the people who were instrumental to the creation of Diablo and Diablo II are no longer with Blizzard. If Blizzard did decide to create a Diablo III, would it be as good as the first and second? In my opinion, Flagship Studios and Castaway Entertainment are two companies that I would definitely keep my eye on. If, in five years from now (because you know it will take that long), Blizzard does release Diablo III, I'll definitely check it out, but for now, Hellgate: London.

Half and Half, wow... thats BS.

I know that when they closed B-N down, no one lost there job, they were relocated to B-HQ, some didn't want to move and left Blizzard for other companies, like Valve...

The 4 founders of Condor had already left to form Flagship at that time.

may the 20th of 2007. (I think, to much alcohol these days).
I was one of those people who got it asap on the day. I waited at Gameheaven (a games shop in my town) thankfully I knew the owner, so I was in the back room, drooling over the game while they played the campaign, The graphics were incredible for back then!

You know what it seems that it is in the same vein as Supreme Commander in that the maps are gigantic.

I jumped into the PC world quite late ~1999 when I got my first PC. StarCraft was the first PC game I bought and Brood War was the second. So I have heavy nostalgia for this game, I can't wait --best birthday news ever.

Happy birthday.

I think the graphics are not the main reason that people play starcraft. The original still has a huge following and the graphics are ancient. It's all about the balance between the 3 races creating strategic possibilities.

If there's anything I've learned with PC gaming over the last decade and a half, it's this:

The sequel to an unprecedented, industry-changing title will never feel half as good or generate half the memories to someone who was there when the original came out.

StarCraft wasn't the first of it's kind, but it was the first damn-good one of it's kind with mass appeal. Since then, it'd been done over a hundred times. I've played many games, like some of the Wing Commander games and Freelancer and commented to someone who never played the earlier titles about how one sequel or another seemed lame and they wouldn't understand; they thought it was great. The only difference? I had the memory of loving the original when it was new and novel, and they approach it fresh.

So, it'll be great, we'll have fun, all of us old fans will buy it and play it just as long as we have SC (or until SC3 arrives), but I very much doubt it'll give the same warm fuzzies over the long haul as SC still does today.

Agreed. My favorite car was a P.O.S. 75 Ford Mustang II. It was my first car. I beat the bejesus out of it. But I get all nostalgic on it. I haven't been as fond of another car since. (Of course, if anyone want to donate a Early Dodge Viper....)
My son and father look at the Mustang II's and tell me they are ugly, useless POS's (piece of S---).

It's always the first great experience that everything else is measured up to... C'est la Vie

2-D vs 3-D
By borowki on 5/19/2007 6:41:25 AM , Rating: 1
I wish Blizzard would stick with a 2-D engine. The sequel looks like it'll require some serious graphical power. No hope of playing it on a non-gaming laptop. While Terrans look great in the new engine, Zergs seem to have lost much of their organic feel. The Zerglings in the pic look like bugs. And I wonder if the frame-rate would hold up when you do a 100+ Zergling rush.

RE: 2-D vs 3-D

If Blizzard's past is any indication then I won't worry about the frame rate. Their games has not been very demanding and I don't think this will be an exception.

As far as I know, 2D characters in Starcraft I are 2D pictures taken from 3D models designed in 3DStudio. That's why they look very 3D. I believe that Blizzard will make the new characters look great again in Star Craft II because it's still at the early development stage at this moment. Some of the new scenes actually look very nice especially when there are lots of units fighting and confronting each other. However, I do feel that the new battle cruisers are not impressive and look somewhat awkward. Can't wait to play this game!!!

RE: 2-D vs 3-D
By Arrundale on 5/19/2007 10:59:06 AM , Rating: 2
I agree that the Battle Cruisers should be more substantial, given their firepower and sustainability for Terran campaigns.

The best feature of Terran campaigns are groups of a dozen Battle Cruisers, each, cutting it up. Given their cost, the Terran Battle Cruiser should retain its relative mass within the gamespace - not the way it is pictured here.

Also, I hope we can learn the maximum numbers of units that can be fielded at one time.

RE: 2-D vs 3-D
By Ringold on 5/20/2007 4:30:30 AM , Rating: 2
I don't think it's *too* early in development; over at IGN they've got them saying it's been in development since the last WC3 release in 2003. That's 4 years. Frankly, to me, it looks like all that's left is minor touch-ups and balance issues before releasing to public. A year, maybe? Less?

RE: 2-D vs 3-D
By JoeBanana on 5/19/2007 7:09:56 AM , Rating: 3
I am either not keen on 3D cuz it has its control limitations. I can't imagine that it would be useful during a combat to zoom in and rotate view point.
Also, I hope there won't be any huge buildings that stick out or units. I think SC1 ratio was just fine.
But if they somehow manage to implement 3D so it wouldn't bother gameplay control I am all for it

I hate 3D interfaces. They've never added anything and always make it look stupid (though very high quality stupid) while making it harder to see what I need to see. I've never managed to spend any real amount of time on any 3D RTS because the interface just made it so un-fun.

RE: 2-D vs 3-D
By Hare on 5/19/2007 1:40:10 PM , Rating: 2
I (mostly) agree. As long as you can play the game just like the traditional 2D sprite version it's ok. Making a game 3D doesn't mean that it's a poor experience for the player. Unfortunately it's easier to fail miserably than make a great 3D user experience when it comes to 3D RTS.

the use of a quick camera position reset button (bksp) has worked quite well for RTS games rendered in 3D. Other than that, it would be interesting to have a "classic" camera scheme where it would just simply lock the camera in place in the "isometric" style view.

Though I think at this rate, we're all just happy to see SC2 finally surface after all these years :)

Very Much an Evolution
By AMDJunkie on 5/19/2007 7:43:25 AM , Rating: 3
The first thing I noticed is that the units and buildings are exactly the same, refreshed for this modern, 3D world. Warcraft III introduced a heck of a lot more change over its predecessor, in units and design. But I imagine the possibility of alienating die-hard Starcraft fans was too much for Blizzard to really shake up the franchise and take a novel approach at Starcraft. It seems to be an expansion pack on steroids, but even if I'm right, I'm sure the excitement will still be through the roof.

Wc3 required amazing micro to play on a decent level. Starcraft didn't; you could get by playing at a decent level without having to click too much. What SC did require was insane mouse breaking macro and micro to play on a competitive level.

SC still is the best RTS.

It even said in one of the videos that I saw that "yes you can still mass in SC2" or something like that. Blizzard realizes that WC3 is too complicated for the casual gamers. Most people on these forums cannot fathom the fact that not everyone spends HOURS upon HOURS playing games. Kind of like the nintendo wii, i just want to play maybe 1-2 hours with friends on a weekend when I have spare time. Done and done. WC3 on the other hand requires a brain aching amount of time invested to really be able to play. The game is too complicated.

Once every month or so my friends and I still play SC just because its so simple and straight forward. Although simple, it gives people with more skills the ability to expand by micro managing while the unskilled noobs can just mass and attack. You cannot mass and attack on WC3, without Micro managing, you get owned so quick in WC3. So its a futile feeling that people get playing WC3 against skilled players. No chance, and you've just wasted your time doing basically nothing; feeling at the end of a WC3 game that you've contributed little to the team effort (usually I play 4vs4 on SC, all with real life friends).

OMFG NOOOB. WHAT A NOOOB. Its crap like that people like me don't care for. Ok your better at me in a game, its not the highlight of my real life. Like the nintendo Wii, I want a game that gives people with little time some sort of chance to compete, without the game ending so quickly before I can build any units, as with WC3. Blizzard has WOW/WC3 for hardcore gamers, Starcraft will make a great addition for casual gamers IMO.

RE: Very Much an Evolution
By Axbattler on 5/20/2007 1:52:35 PM , Rating: 2
I like the contrast between SC and WC3. I am not willing to say that one (i.e. Micro) takes 'more skill' given that a newbie playing SC trying to mass will still get outswarmed by the more experienced player. It is possible that micro has a steeper learning curve, but I don't think that SC gives a better chance for a new players. I wouldn't even say that about Total Annihilation, and I think that game is even less Micro intensive than SC.

Anyway, I'd like to see Blizzard provide both form of RTS. After WC3, it is time for a more macro intensive approach :)

I agree. And the shader effects in SC2 just seem mediocre. I understand blizzard wants to ensure they have a broader user-base (Ie. Asian population with slower computers?), but CC3's 3D engine seems to scale incredibly well anyway so it still comes out on top. Hell, I've seen it run smoothly on a 2.4ghz P4 with a Radeon 9800pro & 1GB Kingston lite DDR400. That kind of system can be had for $350-$400 nowadays.

It seems to me that blizzard not only has big shoes to fill but also fierce competition this time around. I'm certain that EA will be releasing an Expansion pack for CC3 in the near future, and Supreme Commander might still be going strong. Plus there's the oft-forgotten Age of Empires series.

Were there any similarly competing franchises at the time of starcraft 1's release? If I recall correctly the original Command & Conquer would have already been out for close to 2 years by that time.

Total Annihilation, Dark Reign, Age of Empire, C&C: Red Alert (and expansions), KKnD and many clones I can't name on top of my head all came out not long before SC. Homeworld came out a bit over a year later. To be honest, I paid little heed to SC until around two+ years after it's release. I remember playing the demo before going back to Total Annihilation. While the races were not as differentiated (no game until SC), I like the mods, use of terrain, user interface amongst other thing.

SupCom gobbles RAM. 2gig minimum. Video card specs don't seem to make a huge difference.

Break Away

Im just glad Blizzard is breaking away from its Cash Cow WoW, and developing more great games for us to play. WoW is great but there is so much more to Blizzard.

what do you mean "breaking away"?

blizzard has always concentrated at one game at a time (+ expansion). i don't want to play wow but i acknowledge it is a good game.

i was hoping for a diablo 3 announcement to be honest but with hellgate:london coming out this year(?), i think sc II is better.

Blizzard is still doing development on WoW. They're a bigger company now than when they made SC1. I would bet that another WoW expansion pack will come out probably within 9 months after the release of SC2. They're already talking about new content that's being added as part of an upcoming patch.

the plan blizzard has is to release a new expantion for WoW once a year, so you can probably get to see lots of WoW explations.

Diablo III will be made, but it must take a different turn or else just be 2009 graphics with full dx10 only compatibility, something that would make a 8800 ultra burn up and lag.

otherwise, hellgate is going to take it. now, if they are FREE, and charge 55.00 dollars for the game, make 3 expansions for 30 dollars a piece in 2-3 years, then, they will wipe out hellgate. Hellgate is having premium playing only if you pay. I know thats how they work nowadays, but I am not looking forward to paying for my game on a monthly basis.

Also, the futuristic edge to hellgate might make it mediocre compared to the dark, ancient sorcery of DiabloIII.

I honestly think that hellgate was allowed to exist because it was futuristic and not a WOW-like mmorpg. I think it deviates enough that blizzard struck a deal with them. If they hadnt, anyone court looking at the game clearly sees a copyrwrite infraction. I mean, the game is diabloii in the future.

The economic impact

When I woke up this morning, I thought I felt a disturbance in the force, like a billion Asians crying out at once.

In all seriousness, this game has dire consequences for South Korea's economy. My first instinct upon reading this was to stock up on cheap non-perishable goods (because shorty none will be produced) and to click repeatedly on the Protoss, sound icon, wondering how many times I would have to push it before it gave me a new clip.

The sad thing is, you speak a degree of truth -- and lets not fail to consider Japan. Both countries that have to, apparently, put up government signs in arcades imploring the youth to leave, go to work, and occasionally eat and engage in sex to perpetuate the population. Most importantly, WORK.

I'll probably be working as a financial advisor in Indiana at the time it's released, and I'll be sure to clear my schedule the day of release.. And the day after, if I can get away with it. I think I could put a sign on my desk and solve 99% of peoples problems anyway:

"STOP SPENDING MORE THAN YOU EARN. Playing StarCraft, be back tomorrow, do not call me. Clan is recruiting if interested."

I was only partly saying that tongue-in-cheek. It is going to interesting to see the impact of this game. When I was at Berkeley, Warcraft came out. There were so many people on AP, that I though the University was going to declare a state of emergency.

You have chosen a great field there. Extremely lucrative and one I have never understood. Seriously, why would someone pay you a tonne of money to find out something that is just basic common sense? I also don't get investment advisers, I have yet to find a fund that can beat me and I only spend about 2 hours a week managing mine. Hell a no load index fund will beat out most mutual funds. Anyways, I rant.

Release date far away?
By JoeBanana on 5/19/2007 6:36:07 AM , Rating: 2
I looked up all trailers, FAQ and stuff about SC2 and I got the feeling SC2 is in early development and will not be released soon.
-in gameplay movies there is blizzard comment: "Please note: We have a lot of balance work in front of us. Nothing you see today is final."
-in FAQ there are lots of questions that ended up something like this: At this point, it's too early to provide...
-no statistics on units
-only few protoss units description(though there is coming soon for others...)

Yeah, it's really a vauge statment, but who cares, we waited almost 10 years for an announcment! And for all we know the development could have been in progress for sevral years. I'm just happy that it's finnaly comming to a close. But the annoucnment site, feels more like a teaser than an actual website.

Blizzard always takes there time to make each title a gem..

I wouldn't mind waiting for SC2. I'm sure its going to be along the lines of D2, D2:LOD, W3:ROC and W3:TFT... Wow..

Woohoo! First to notice the ingame advertising place holders in that bottom screenshot. lol guess it will be funny when we see other game or mmo advertisements appear there, like, "Try LOTRO now!" -_^

yeah, but did you also see the siege tank explosions?
boom!!

better not get too excited since we're in for some delays. i mean i can't even imagine what the alternative could be.

There is a line at the bottom of the FAQ page that mentions the use of the Havok physics engine. There's my excuse to upgrade.

Three wishes:

1. Release when it is done but release it.

2. Release it just before I buy my next power PC. WC3 released when I spent my money on an office pc and office equipment (Bummer).

3. Make a deal with DICE and build a Battlefield Starcraft (since Starcraft Ghost is dead) Getting my hopes up and then dashing them is almost as disappointing as watching SW:ep 1

I really, would love to fight in FPS against Zerg, use a Protos sword, fire a siege tank.

Meh. . .
By dandres87 on 5/19/2007 1:13:19 PM , Rating: 2
If you look at the screens it looks very similar to Command and Conquer 3. The dynamics don't look too impressive. It looks like a Starcraft on WCIII mod on steroids. Sure if you really liked SC and WCIII I guess you'll love it (you better) I have serious doubts, though of it being a better RTS than CoH or Supreme Commander. The hype-machine and repuatation will makes its sales, but so far nothing seems innovative about it, unlike its predecessor. SC 2.0, unfortunately I'm afraid that wont cut it with all the other new RTS. Can anyone say AOE3? Hype will sell it. Flame me . . . . I know its coming.

Shure this game looks alot like other RTS games,(wich is good in this case) but its always the story of blizzard games what makes you come back for more,Besides I already have cnc3 and supcom, and I play them alot but I like variety, and this is and always have been a good game, even if its not innovative enough for you !!!

keith i'm a rabid sc fan but you need to relax dude

By dandres87 on 5/21/2007 3:21:05 AM , Rating: 2
mite i also add, most younger gamers dont post on hardware sites, they post on gamespot or ign. And it only looks okay, u can only say it looks amazing if you compare to Sc1 because the RTS of the week pales SC2 (gfx wise)

Familiarity isnt a bad thing
By Zensen on 5/19/2007 3:27:23 PM , Rating: 2
Looks like they are testing a 3d engine and ie a lot of the models look the same (buildings) and I don't mind that.
Also I did enjoy the words they mumbled for each character. Individuality - good thing! So i hope they keep that!

Wonder if we will see some in-game advertising...

Mean I totally loved that statements from each of SC units.
Like: This is not warcraft in space. or I know it's not 3D.

DX10 and Vista
By Rampage on 5/20/2007 8:13:30 PM , Rating: 2
This game is a landmark for Windows Vista.
Requiring a DX10 card and 2GB of RAM makes this game a huge boon to Microsoft.

I already have a DX10 card (8800GTX), 2GB and Vista so bring on SC2. Sounds like it wont take even a year to be released, I read on an asian forum that it was ready last year (development started in 2003) and that they are balancing and tweaking the game now in every aspect to perfection.
