Blackberry Bold 9650  (Source: RIM)

Blackberry Pearl 3G  (Source: RIM)
Bold 9650 is due in May

RIM's Blackberry is one of the best selling brands of smartphones on the planet for both consumers and business users. RIM has many different models that operate on different networks and carriers globally.

Recently a new device from RIM leaked sporting a not so attractive clamshell form factor and running a new version of the Blackberry OS.  That clamshell handset hasn’t been officially unveiled at this point, but RIM has made a couple other devices official today.

One of the new smartphones that RIM has introduced is the Blackberry Bold 9650. The device is a global smartphone for CDMA customers that is 3G capable on EVDO networks and HSPA/UMTS networks. The handset has the Blackberry QWERTY keyboard the company is known for and 802.11 b/g WiFi. Internal memory is 512MB and that can be expanded up to 32GB via a microSDHC card. A 2GB microSD card is included with the handset.

The Bold 9650 measures 4.4" x 2.4" x 0.56" and weighs 4.8 ounces. The screen is 2.44" and it has a resolution of 480 x 360. The camera is a 3.2-megapixel unit with flash, zoom, image stabilization, autofocus, and video recording. The handset will launch in the U.S. in May at an undisclosed price.

RIM has also unveiled the Pearl 3G. The device is the smallest Blackberry yet and supports all the features you expect of a Blackberry smartphone. The handset is a candybar design measuring 4.25" x 1.96" x 0.52" and weighing 3.3 ounces. The processor is a 624MHz unit with 256MB of flash memory. A 3.2-megapixel camera is built-in with video recording, autofocus and flash. The device also has 802.11b/g/n WiFi and a microSD card slot. The Pearl 3G operates on tri-band UMTS/HSPDA and quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM networks. The keyboard on the handset is a 20-key condensed QWERTY unit.

I am so over RIM. I bet the 9650 won't work, just like the 9630 didn't. I have no faith RIM can make a working phone today. Never again will I give my money to RIM, who could care less if your Blackberry functions out of the box.

Having personally activated and setup a dozen blackberries on a BES in the past week, I call BS. Everything has worked, activations were flawless. Either you're technologically incompetent, or you're not using a BB for it's intended target - buisnesses. All that extra stuff and apps are there so business-people don't have to carry two phones, but the primary purpose of a BB has and always will be a work phone.

(If anyone is asking about the Pearl, there ARE women in the business world with a sense of style and a regular brick just isn't)

I can see where he's coming from.

My BB storm 2 is a bit of a pile. I went from a standard flip phone so the Storm 2 is my first smartphone, and I Looooove the features, but it's buggy as hell. Screens randomly freeze for a few moments, keyboard sometimes stops working, no easy way to hide and show the keyboard (that i've found, i have to pull up the app menu, scroll wy down to hide/show keyboard and hit that each time i want to hide or show the keyboard manually).

Functionally this phone has been a huge upgrade, but if ver 6 of the OS doesn't fix these irritatingly RANDOM problems with my storm 2, i wont get a blackberry again.

I know, I have a 9700 myself. Yes it is a good phone but I wish they had put visionary people in charge of developing it. There are many little things I wished they had done a lot better. The web browser is a heavy pain in the butt. Why cant RIM get on with the program and release a great and fast phone? Imageine a phone with 512 OR more megs of RAM, faster processor, full touchscreen with a slider keyboard, a very fast browser mixed with the magic of blackberry. That would be awesome. From the looks of it, if they dont make things better [especially with the browser] I think I will jump ship and go for WP7 whenever it comes out.

Options?

Wonder if this Bold will be available without a camera too? As unexciting as these are RIM is the only game in town for non-camera smart phones.

If only they would make one exciting enough for me to really want one.

My brother got an HTC Ozone sans camera. He works with the DoD and they are not allowed in some areas with cameras on their phones. He thought he was stuck with RIM, until he found the Ozone. But in my opinion, he's now stuck with WinMo. But all in all he says WinMo works better for him at work, so go figure.

It looks to me that the black BB Pearl has a different keyboard than the pink one... I sure hope they keep the SureType that the Pearl has always had.

Even though I'm fully entrenched in the iPhone/Android world for phones, I always remember my BB Pearl fondly. Glad to see it's still around!

What a Shame

I won't buy any blackberry until RIM make an OS that allow full duplex on 1 application. up to now blackberry OS don't allow recording and playback at the same time with only 1 software running. that makes it impossible to developed true VOIP for blackberry (IM+ VOIP software solve this problem by making user hold a button when they speak, it works like a PTT only one person can say or hear anything at a time). I uses a lot of VOIP in Wifi or in cellular network so IM+ solution is unacceptable for me.

Hopefully RIM would lift full duplex limitation from the upcoming OS.
