A red Nintendo DSi will be released in Japan as well

Kotaku is reporting Nintendo plans to release a Black Nintendo Wii in Japan on August 1 for 25000 Yen ($260 USD). The black Nintendo Wii looks very sleek and less like a toy that would be out of place sitting next to a home entertainment system.

In addition to the black console, Nintendo will naturally release black accessories for the Nintendo Wii. The black Wii Remote will be 3800 Yen ($40 USD), the black Nunchaku will be 1800 Yen ($19USD), and the black Classic Controller will be 2000 Yen ($21 USD).

Rumors of the black Wii were making the rounds over two years ago on multiple technology blogs. An anonymous Nintendo representative had allegedly revealed that black and red Wii consoles were on the way.

The rumors got the colors right but the consoles wrong as Nintendo revealed that in addition to the black Wii they plan to release a bright red Nintendo DSi as well on July 11. The red DSi compliments the pink, yellow, and blue versions that are already available in the region.

If Nintendo brings this to the states

I'm selling my Wii in a heartbeat. Assuming it gets HD capabilities. <grumble gripe>

HD isn't so much needed, but optical audio and/or HDMI would be nice for outputs. I'd probably spring for a black Wii if they made it available with these outputs.

Cabling my friend. I'd much rather have a single optical out for my audio, not to mention I don't have to worry about line noise with an optical cable compared to a shielded RCA cable. With HDMI it's the same thing, no worries about signal interference, no proprietary A/V cable to buy, and HDMI can deliver both audio and video over one cable.

By vapore0n on 6/4/2009 5:18:07 PM , Rating: 2
The Wii A/V cable is just one cable. Fat as an HDMI, that splits at the end into 2 audio, 3 video. So its not as bad as you make it out to be. You can buy one for 5$ too (I did)so its not expensive.

TV input competition would be a good reason, but that's not Nintendo's fault.

The guy still has a point. Id welcome HDMI port if resolution were to be bumped to 720p and 5.1 audio. No sense in going hard core like optical just for 480p/2.0.

How about the fact that the only cable you can use to do 480p (besides HDMI) is component? Plus audio that makes four cables, and three of them are probably pretty fat.

Component looks great and I used it for years, but if you have DVR/PS3/Xbox/Wii/HTPC, one cable per device really helps.

Right now my Wii takes the most cabling of all my devices, and I have all of the devices I listed above. The rest are all on HDMI. Four times as much cabling for the crappy little Wii. It's no wonder I haven't plugged it back in yet after I reorganized my av rack.

Do you understand now?

Five actually. Stereo sound + component is 5 cables. For me personally, HDMI would be sweet because I could quit plugging my U-Verse STB into the side component inputs.

Oh yeah, I'd love to buy another Wii just for the black case.

Wonder if they'll come out with a pink one? :)

Better yet, skins...and get a range of color like the dell laptop lineup... heh.

I guess you missed the part where I said "ASSUMING IT GETS HD CAPABILITIES. " As in, I'm not buying it just because it's black. Sorry, Obama, I said the same thing during the election. Oh, and better games. Damn, the games suck, except for a few titles and the virtual console. I never owned a console until the PS1, so they're new to me except for the arcade games like the Neo Geo stuff.

Maybe I should clarify my Obama comment. I didn't vote for him because was black, I voted for him because I though Obama/Biden was a better choice than McCain/Palin. In other words, what's on the inside is better than what's on the outside. Plenty of people voted for him because he was black, but using that logic Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be president. Ugh!

Or were you just angry because I said the Wii games suck?

By Motoman on 6/4/2009 2:35:24 PM , Rating: 2
Yeah, we've had one for quite some time now...and while I most definitely would prefer the black over the white (it does stick out like a sore thumb in my all-black A/V setup), I can't imagine buying *another* Wii just for a color change.

Hmmm...I wonder if I could disassemble the case and paint the damn thing myself...

How about a can of spray paint instead? A little clear coat and Bob's your Uncle.

Interesting aside to the PS3 sales article. Sony cannot get people to buy theirs, and here we have a few post of people willing to buy another Wii (with some minor hardware additions). Hell I'd almost pick one up just for the color alone. See Sony price does matter :)

I personally like the white version just fine, granted the black one does look sharp (better even). Personally I'm not buying a new WII for a color change. If they added new capabilities, then I'd think about it depending on what the capabilities were.

However, your post is pretty funny and it does raise an interesting point. If people are willing to re-buy the WII because the color looks nicer, then I'm officially awe-stricken by the consoles popularity.

By inighthawki on 6/4/2009 1:56:51 PM , Rating: 2
If it's all about the colors then people can always buy black faceplates online for $20, minimum assembly required...

WHY would they bring this out now. Why not wait till the next system to re-do the look. Seems like a pointless marketing ideas for SD Wii. The HD Wii should be black.

By GodisanAtheist on 6/4/2009 6:13:11 PM , Rating: 2
Frankly I'm surprised it took so long, given that Nintendo was the first in the console sphere to latch onto the *sell the same damn thing in different colors* marketing tactic.

Hell, they would even do limited edition COLORS for some of their old gameboys.

Personally I have always been partial to the OG Red/Grey/Black scheme. Why Nintendo hasn't released retro versions of everything they make considering the Nintendo name benefits greatly from nostalgia alone.

I've had a black Wii for over two years:

However, black accessories would be killer.

this > your black wii.

i won't buy a new wii. i'd rather just get mine painted. mine's tied to VC and although i can transfer my DL games to another console--it's a PITA.

Now if we could get them to understand that metal is the only material to encase said fire-breathing electronics in, we'd have something.

I too liked the name "Revolution", but I understood the reason for the change (it didn't translate as well in other languages). On a funny note, if they make a new "WII console, I hope they go with WII^2 (WII squared) because it would factor down to "WII WII" and that just amplifies the penis joke (:-P).

If they biuld it, I will come.

If they come out with a black Wii in the US, I'll buy it immediately.
