Binary Heroes

Is it just me, or is Binary Heroes just not funny. I mean, they are current, and topical to a tech news site like this, but I cannot say I have ever actually laughed at one of them.

I vote NO =)

Humor, for humor's sake, is an empty place. Humor for the sake of the truth -- that is what I long for :)

Kudos Rob. You will end up getting syndicated in Newsweek or one of the majors someday :)

I agree with you there, but I just have never seen this particular strip as funny. I mean its a little bit funny, but not funny enough to publish (kind of like the family circus). I guess its just me.

I am sorry... Now I feel like a schmuck. I just now realized that this is not a somewhat nationally distributed/syndicated strip. It is from a staffer here. In that case its a good effort.

I kind of agree. Occasionally I'll chuckle at one of them, but they're usually not very clever. No offense meant at the author, just my opinion.

Well, there's precious few comics out there about up-to-date technology, coming out as quick as Binary Heroes, so we takes what we's can gets I guess.

Thats my point I guess. Its not funny at all, and it really could be with a little more creativity put into it...

The comcast one was funny. Other than that, I have to agree. It rarely even makes me chuckle.

Considering WB is a studio which got famous for its cartoons, I thought it was pretty funny.

A great strip that does sometimes touch on technology is Foxtrot. The one on 12/30/07 took on the absurdity of the Digital Milennium Act that we suffer under today.

Political cartoons aren't necessarily supposed to be funny, but at least they should be insightful or ironic satire or something. This series just plain fails on all counts, IMHO.

I wonder how Warner Bros feel about their IP being used in this toon...

This is clearly a case of nominative fair use, and therefore not infringing.

I've been feeling the same way, and just want to add my $.02.

My general response to the cartoons has been "meh".

I really like the idea of an occasional cartoon on DailyTech, but having read some of the excellent webcomics out there, I guess my standards of quality are higher than they would otherwise be.

My thoughts exactly...

Well, the point is that "ACME" has been a staple of the WARNER BROTHERS cartoons (Bugs Bunny, Elmer, Daffy Duck, etc.) for decades. The cartoon is more clever than it first appears. He could have dumbed it down and written "Warner Bros." on the anvil, but it wouldn't quite have the same effect.

Still, including the 360 in the pile simply doesn't work. Microsoft will eventually release a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360. They said all along that they will follow consumer demands - obviously, once no more movies are released on HD-DVD, consumers will demand it. If anything, it helps Microsoft. Hypothetically, the $400 dollars burning a hole in a 360-owner's pocket can be used to buy a $100 add-on and $300 in movies and games rather than a PS3.

Plus, Blu-Ray stand-alone players will all soon be cheaper than even the entry model PS3, so incentive to buy the PS3 "as a BD player" will wane.

I'd have put "Acme Studios" on the anvil myself :)

i would've rather seen a HD-DVD drive at the bottom of a dusty canyon hold up a "help" sign in it's tray and beeing overshadowed by a humongous boulder.

simply it took some time to get the joke, as i first thought that black thing ontop of the xbox was a ps3 :P and the xbox'll live regardless, microsoft will see to that. besides that, bugs as far as i can remember didn't really hurt anybody. they'd always get hurt by chasing bugs of their own action, the "rabbit season, duck season" episodes beeing the testimony of that. when it comes to trying to get something, putting epic amounts of energy into it only to have everything blow up in your face completely, is more of Wile E. Coyote's style then good ol' bugs.

See, now thats alot funnier than what the original author put out. They could have done great things with the "rabbit season, duck season" as well.

A bit of useless trivia: ACME is an acronym for "A Company that Makes Everything."

Why the 360? It's not going to fail if HD-DVD does.

RE: Funny but
By TheDiceman on 1/9/2008 10:38:18 AM , Rating: 2
Yeah, it does seem rather silling to include an actual 360 instead of the add on external drive. Plus Microsoft already stated that an external Blu-Ray plyaer is not out of the question should the format win out completely.

Couldn't Microsoft just produce an external Blu-Ray drive the same as the HD-DVD unit?

Actually Microsoft could produce an external DUAL FORMAT (HD-DVD/BLU-RAY) Drive and were would that put the PS3?

RE: Funny but
By Murst on 1/9/2008 11:57:34 AM , Rating: 2
Any support of blu ray from MS would not do any damage to the PS3. I also think that MS will be releasing a BR drive. Whether it is dual format or not remains to be seen, but MS will need to do that if they want to keep up w/ Sony in the media department.

Although right now HD DVD isn't really dead since you can still get movies on it, MS will not want to be seen as supporting obsolete technology. By the end of the year, I would be surprised if blu-ray does not account for 90%+ of all HD media sales.

SD DVD still rules

What Bugs doesn't see is this big falling boulder called DVD about to smash him like a bug. Many people may decide not to buy HD because up-converted SD is good enough. It's all about price. Given the choice of buying a DVD for $14.99 or the HD for $24.99 to $39.99, the masses may choose DVD instead.

Your statement is very true, a vast majority of consumers are not about to pay up for a new player as long as they can just use standard DVDs. A lot of people do not ever care about upconverting and with the dominance of standard DVDs it will be a good decade before anything would face the chance of being phased out, just look how long VHS lasted.

I could afford HD-DVD or Blu-ray and choose not to go with either.

The only content I enjoy more in HD vs DVD quality are Discovery Channel/Documentary. And I can get enough of that from HD Cable.

Yes I can see a difference, I just don't see the value over the DVD format for movies/TV shows. With is impressive installation base and easy portability (ripping to Zune/PSP, or backseat DVD players) DVD.

And no don't compare it to VHS->DVD. VHS didn't have the type of personal level access DVDs do. Every laptop can be a personal portable movie player. Minivans all have DVD players as an option (not just the big conversion vans with a CRT and VHS). VHS didn't give you the selection and access to TV Seasons that DVD has done. The cost of VHS movies was also expensive compared to DVD. Yes DVDs were more expensive when they came out then they are now ... but you forget that VHS was also more expensive then DVDs have now become.

Personally, I'd rather see downloaded content as the next step in media distribution. I like digital distribution better for lack of disks to organize and keep track of as well as the instant gratification factor of not needing to goto a store. This has it's own issues though, like HD-DVDs and Blu-ray it's not compatible with the current installed base of players.

In the short term (1-2 years) these new disk formats can NOT win over DVD, but they could co-exist. They need to sell ALL the movies with one side HD-DVD or Blu-ray and the other side DVD. Even people without the HD players might start paying the few $$ more, and start planning to buy an HD player.

RE: SD DVD still rules
By TheDiceman on 1/9/2008 1:40:53 PM , Rating: 2
I will compare VHS->DVD becuaes while it is true that VHS did not allow for such a range of media access, it took quite soem time for DVD players to be so common place with laptops becoming more affordable options such as a player in your car. Until things like that became practical options a lot of people looked at DVD the same way they now look at HD-DVD/Blu-Ray; not worth the cost to change until it satuates the market enough.

It is a combination of price and the fact that nothing is really new with Hi-Def DVD. The jump from VHS to DVD had alot of nice features. Smaller media, lasts longer without degredation, no more rewinding, skip to scenes faster, better quality video, etc. Things that mattered.

What does Hi-Def DVD offer? Slightly better video than upvonvert DVD(as long as you have a new hdtv). PIP(havnt used it in 10 years why start now?) Internet connectivity(with Blu-Ray eventually after you upgrade to a profile 2.0, movie merchadise will be overpriced). Can you think of anything other than better picture(Disc size is related to PC and has nothing to with purchasing a HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player) and features very few people will use?

Pumping Iron?

Looks like Bugs has been pumping some iron! Or he's wearing shoulder pads.

I agree with the comment that the anvil should have read Blu-Ray, not ACME. I immediately understood what the XBOX symbolises (HD-DVD). This does not mean it sucks. Good thing Microsoft had the forethought to NOT include the HD-DVD in the unit itself, of course ,t his may partly explain the demise of HD-DVD.

I wonder if I'll be able to purchase the Blu-ray XBOX add-on for cheap.

360 v. PS3

Games are still the primary mover of consoles. When I buy one of the new consoles, it will be because there is a game for it that I want to play. Currently Mass Effect is the only thing that might motivate me. Assasins Creed possibly. Pretty sure both will release on the PC (if Assasins Creed hasn't already).

By Shadowmaster625 on 1/10/2008 12:21:43 PM , Rating: 1
Because that's who loses in this battle. Just look at the price trend on HD-DVD vs the price premium on Blu-ray. This happens all the time across the marketplace. More cost effective products are squashed in favor of more expensive products that dont offer any measurable advantage to justify the higher price. Blu-ray should cost 10% more than HD-DVD, based on its relative value as a product. But do you see blu-ray players selling for 10% more than HD-DVD? Hell no. It's called fleecing the sheeple, and it happens all the time. And the funniest part is how the dumbed down masses cheer at this then march off down the street and take their vaccines and vote for Hillary! Is it any wonder the US economy will soon cease to be the largest in the world?

Back when Bugs Bunny first became popular, something like this could never have happened, because back then the average consumer was not so friggin dumb! Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Most of the time I dont mind that the consumer is so stupid. Take those morons who always paid top dollar for the latest intel processor. I loved those people because they subsidized the cost of the midrange parts that I always bought. But this... this screws me over too and that's the only reason I'm pissed. It's going to be 2 more years before I can get into hi-def, when I could have gotten in 2 years ago if people weren't so damn gullible.
