Deja Vu
By Swaid on 11/15/2007 8:21:15 AM , Rating: 5
Didn't Family Guy do a similar joke just last Sunday?

In Family Guy, Stewie was taking control of the Power Grid in the US and Clippy pops up asking "I see you're trying to take over the world. Can I help?"

Considering the timing of this... *cough*

Maybe a little suspect. But Clippy (may he rot in digital hell forever, with tiny little demons pitchforking him right in the electron shells!) is so widely reviled its kind of an obvious joke. I've also seen it used when Petyr trys to take over the world and in various other ways in "User Friendly" (userfriendly.org).

There was a bunch of commercials some time ago touting someone's network aiding cops in apprehending criminals, had a 'mouse pointer' basically dragging a criminal by their shirt collars as though the pointer was the cop. I remember thinking at the time that one wrong move and Clippy would leap to the foreground saying "Are you trying to make an arrest?" and result in the pointer losing focus and the criminal scrambling free.

Just part of the zeitgeist I guess. Of all the things Microsoft is accused of (and as a Vista x64 user, I'm actually rather impressed with functionality thus far, so no general MS hater) Clippy will probably be the one thing they never, ever live down.

Yea, I hardly think Family Guy's joke was original. Google yields 114,000 results for "clippy" "joke". So Family Guy's version is 114,001.

Well, I didn't see the Family Guy (or any Family Guy since about 2004) but I'll tell you how the panel evolved:

We started having the guy type on his Apple IIe, attempting to launch at DOS from there with this E-Jihad program, but it didn't quite pop. Clippy got added in later, and any likeness to their reference was purely coincidental.

I saw Clippy on my monitor screen when I was using Microsoft Word yesterday. Obviously this joke was stolen from Microsoft. Save your explanation of how this joke "evolved" for the rest of these fools because I'm on to your scam.

Stewie: Go away, nobody likes you!!!

ahh classic. I liked how that episode implemented American DAd into the story even though American Dad isn't as good as Family Guy.

American Dad is much better written. Some of the guys are the same writers from Futurama.

Apparently he hasn't. And I don't care what faith you are, if any, jihad (or any other form of religious aggression) is just plain wrong.

Are you asking if I pay attention to the hate mongering media? Yes. Do I think it's slanted at trying to continue spreading fear and hate? Yes, it does so now, as it always has.

I think he might want to get a sense of humor.

Maybe if you understood what was at the root of humour, you'd find most things aren't really funny. Then again, you're a 25 year old who still watches Looney Tunes. Now that is funny.

Usually humour offends someone because it's purpose is to make fun of something or someone. I recall there was a lady who gave thumbs up to someone who dressed up like a black escaped convict. Apparently she might lose her bid for some kind of high government post over it because it offended a prominent minority in the US. Now, if it had some how made fun of Muslims, there'd probably be no fuss.

Some races and religions, it's ok to make fun of them. Others it's not. At least, this is how it works out in popular media. It, like so many things, is slanted against the people that the government supports in its hate campaign, but not ok for others.

I caught that story on DT awhile ago. It doesn't keep me from the feeling that it's just more hype designed to continue the current regime of fear that has been pushed. As was stated, nothing really materialized. It was probably just another attempt at propagating fear. I think the DT article that you linked to seemed to debunk the whole affair as a joke created by people who were probably playing a poor taste joke. This cartoon seems to make a joke out of the religion. This is the distinction that I find offensive. I'm an atheist, but nonetheless, I think people ought to respect each other's religion, even if gods and goddesses are figments of our imagination.

Oh come on. As someone already pointed out, clippy jokes are part of the zeitgeist. For example the classic suicide note photochop:

While we cannot appreciate everything ourselves, at least appreciate that someone else will find it funny. I only replied to you since you posted two negative replies, which is a bit of a thread-crap IMO.

It's probably because all your posts are getting -1 ratings. In my experience, employers and potential lovers prefer an average Dailytech post rating of 3 to 4.

Not even I am able to rise above the oppression of my low, average comment rating. I wish society could find a better system to determine who gets jobs and sex. Until then, I'll be under my bed...crying.
