Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray Player
This war is over, you can all go home now ... seriously

This is just so ridiculous that I had to put it into a blog post instead of an actual news article. If you thought that the world had gone mad with the SIXAXIS controller winning an Emmy for Technology and Engineering, then this news is sure to blow your mind.

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has already declared victory in the high definition DVD market. Blu-ray and HD DVD products haven't even been on the retail market for a year, yet Andy Parsons, chairman of the U.S. Promotions Committee for the Blu-ray Disc Association, proclaimed that "The success of Blu-ray Disc is unprecedented  ...With unmatched cross-industry support, including seven of the eight major Hollywood studios and two biggest players in the music industry, consumers have voted with their wallets."

The BDA cites the fact that over 25 companies have released Blu-ray based products along with over one million PlayStation 3 consoles being shipped since November worldwide -- enough to say that the high-definition disc race is over.

I'm sure that Toshiba, Microsoft and the rest of the HD DVD camp are rolling their eyes at this announcement. It’s still too early to declare either format the victor at this point and products like LG’s hybrid Blu-ray/HD DVD GGW-H10N player only further complicates matters.

I'm not betting on either format -- and both sides have too much momentum to call it one way or the other.  Parsons has to announce positive feedback for BDA or he would be out of a job, but let's not get carried away here!

Seems to me that Toshiba should announce that HD-DVD has won the battle just to confuse things further.

Guess I should hurry up and sell my HD-DVD drive and run out and buy a BluRay unit or maybe a PS3 (since gamestop has them sitting there collecting dust anyway).

Next we will have Microsoft business partners harping the HD DVD format as the winner due to exactly the same reasons.

As Sony desperately attempts to grab consumers' attention, and Microsoft does the same in Japan, Nintendo has quieted considerably. I have not seen a new advertisement from them in ages. The thing is, they do not need to. The advertisement blitz that passed and the continuing word of mouth keeps the Nintendo momentum quite high.

Every time I hear about the high def power struggle, I just shake my head.

Actually Toshiba already did. I saw an article yesterday stating so because of the number of HD-DVD discs sold per unit was more than the Blu-Ray camp. This is probably because a good portion of Blu-Ray players are on PS3 and are being used for gaming instead of playing movies.

With the latest LG Dual-Format player I would suggest everyone to just get ready for Dual-Format players and Dual-Format CDs. Then the consumer just has to pay both Sony and Toshiba their cut in the royalties.

That would probably be the best way to go. Though, I am going to wait at LEAST 3-4 years before buying a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player.

Just not worth it right now to be on the bleeding edge.

I have yet heard Sony state that PS3 has outsold the 360 - maybe they predict it will in the future but not currently - its only been out 2 months.

But Blu-Ray has done some interesting things

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news/

Some of which includes Blu-Ray sales went up 700% since release of PS3 and that Blu-Ray is predicted to outsell HD DVD by 3.5 to 1 in March 2007.

I have both a PS3 and 360 with HD DVD and I perfer the PS3 for watching movies. Microsoft did some things wrong on HD DVD drive - it needs HDMI output and its own optical output. But for $200 what can you expect.

I agree. I think its sonys failed attempt at reaching back out to a market that doesnt want its products. There is no clear winner yet, for all we know, BOTH could fail, which is why i sold my x360 HD-DVD drive a few days ago. Im not going to choose a side until we have a clear winner, or until both sides co-exist( like DVD+R and -R).

Well, the biggest problem with Sony's products is usually that they put asinine restrictions on the format. That's why Mini-Disc never took off, why SA-CD never took off, etc.

what else is he supposed to say?

... the consumers who have been smart enough to tell Sony, Toshiba, et. al to take their incompatible, DRM-filled, competing formats and shove 'em!

Politics aside ...

Politics aside he's the head of the BDA, he is supposed to say this. The HD DVD camp made a similar (although not as extreme) statement saying HD DVD is winning because it sold more movies this year, which was true. Blu-Ray camp said at the end of the year BD media started to outsell the HD DVD media, right around the time PS3 was introduced. And this momentum will carry it forward from now on.

The BDA has some compelling arguments. BD has way more industry support hardware wise and media wise. In two months the PS3 has outsold all HD DVD hardware (I understand you have to factor in the fact these were bought for games, not movies). Using the most conservative estimates for PS3 sales, and the most aggressive estimates for HD DVD player sales, there are more blu-ray players in homes after just two months.

The PS3 is also a very good BD player. HDMI 1.3, PCM streaming (to a HDMI receiver), etc. etc.

I could care less either way. I have a PS3, so Blu-Ray is there for me. I plan on getting a HD DVD drive, ripping it out, and putting it in my HTPC as soon as my lazy arse has time to vinyl dye the drive. Netflix allows me to rent either HD format for no extra charge.

Won't be an issue

With LG's dual player, choosing a format won't be an issue. The way I see it now, I choose neither. There is nothing that compels me right now to use either BlueRay or HD. Right now many people won't switch cause they are happy with the current DVD format.

And the war in Iraq is over and we were the winners, right?

I stand by my earlier statements that EVERYTHING I've seen on HD-DVD has looked fantastic, yet outside of one demo disc for BD I have been totally disappointed. BD vs HD-DVD on discs like Superman Returns shows HD-DVD to have higher video quality AND dolby truehd sound.

I just wish one format would win already! I really wanted to buy a player this Christmas just couldn't justify it.
