Droid is...
By Xavi3n on 10/27/2009 9:07:56 PM , Rating: 5
Droid is the only one on that list with a full qwerty keyboard, fast processor (only 50Hz less than the iPhone 3GS) and Android 2.0. It has the best combination of features so far for a smart-phone.

... and that's why I want it so badly.

+1, this coming from a very happy iPhone 3G user :-). Though what ever Apple comes up with next is sure to be impressive. I don't care for the keyboard, but that Droid is looking pretty darn sweet!

I want the droid since its the andriod phone (I have the G1 and like it)

Also motorolla has always made good phones (at least the ones I have had) And I also like the Headphone jack. Which the G1 does not have and is what PIsses me off the most...

I know...freaking T-mobile doing phones on the cheap and not buying the units with headphone jacks is ridiculous in this day and age.

I figure Ill be getting Bluetooth headphones in the next year so the headphone jack I'm losing interest in. Ive hooked the cable on headphones ten too many times to want wires.

I really like the HTC Tilt2

I don't know anything about this Droid, I want to check out the Nokia N900 I am really leaning towards getting that phone when my iphone contact expires early next year. ATT's network sucks so hard that it isn't even worth keeping the Iphone. If I don't like the N900 I will check out the droid I would hate to buy end up with a 3GS though with the poor battery life, crappy service and the over heating problems though.

I've had the iPhone 3G since launch day and was hoping to be able to hold out until the summer for a new phone. Thing is, I don't have much faith that my iPhone will last that long. Its getting slower and slower and the speaker is starting to die out. There's a whole 9 months between now and the likely launch date of the next iPhone...

I want the Droid as well, the more I read about it, the more I want it. Unfortunately, my current New Every Two doesn't come up until March.

Normally, I'd wait for till March, but my Env2's been having battery problems lately and randomly powering off. Not sure spending 50 bucks on a battery for a phone that's going to be recycled in a few months.

Also, its possible I might be able to convince the CSRs to give me the discount early since I've been a VZW customer since 2004, but if there's heavy demand, it may not be possible.

We need to get rid of proprietary technologies or we will always be taken advantage of (e.g. why pay big bucks for an iPod Nano when a plane-Jane MP3 player will keep you covered for much less?). Thank deity that Google published Android for hardware coming out of the open handset alliance. The next phone I buy MUST run open software.

what if I don't crave a smartphone? I don't even have a cell phone. Sure they're convenient, but definitely not a necessity, no matter what the advertisements say. If you need to reach me and I'm not in my office or in my house, then I will be shortly, or I'm not available to talk.

And here I thought I was the only person who still doesn't care about owning a cellphone + plan. Are they convenient and cool? Sure. People need their constant fix of distractions these days though.

Its great that you can get by without a cell phone these days. Smartphones aren't for everyone, but a regular cell phone is an extremely handy device and I would have missed out a lot of opportunities without mine, both work and social opportunities.

I too had a cell phone for a number of years but decided it was a waste of money. If I'm not home or at work, my answering machine suffices quite well. The money I saved is invested.
How many people really need a smartphone? A very expensive toy for most.

RE: Where's none?
By IcePickFreak on 10/31/2009 5:25:33 AM , Rating: 3
I'm just the opposite, I haven't had a home phone in 10+ years. That said, I'm not really a fan of talking on the phone so I spend minimal time on it. If I had a home phone and no cell, I'd be spending that much more time playing phone tag with people that I need to get a hold of or people that need to get a hold of me for legitimate reasons. The extra functionality of a smart phone piques the geek in me, but outside of work I wouldn't really have a use for it.

RE: Where's none?
By Xenokyn on 10/31/2009 1:01:05 PM , Rating: 2
I need/want a decent cellphone but have no desire for a smartphone, so none would apply to me also. I'll stick with unlocked Sony Ericssons until I have no other choice.

RE: Where's none?
By jefmes on 10/31/2009 3:05:47 PM , Rating: 2
Turn in your geek badge then, you don't belong! ;)

Seriously though, if you think having a smartphone or cell phone now is about getting calls, you're missing the point. I use my mobile device probably 80% for access to information and 20% for calls. It's about having the world's data available to you, wherever you go, whenever you want it.

Calls are completely secondary now I think. Over the next few years I see these devices becoming our true Personal Computers.

RE: Where's none?
By kmmatney on 11/2/2009 1:08:24 PM , Rating: 2
yep. I use my iPhone (employer supplied) the most when I'm at home and I want to browse the web from my couch through my Wifi connection. Checking email on the go is also essential.

RE: Where's none?

Just get a pay-as-you-go phone - my wife has had one, and has kept the same cell phone number for over 5 year and counting. We spend about $60 year for it, and it comes in handy a lot. You just can't use it for long conversations, as you can use your minutes pretty quickly. Overall, its very convenient and cheap.

I've always had a cell phone for work, so have never had to pay for my own. My current work phone is an Iphone 3GS, which I really like. Its pretty awesome, but I don't see myself ever shelling out my own money for a cell phone plan. I've had it for free for too long.

RE: Where's none?

Well, what about a "dumb phone". I just have a standard pay as you go cell phone. I don't need internets, texting and all that garbage. I just need a cell phone for emergencies.

HTC HD2 is coming!

I currently have the 3GS and the Samsung i8910. Both are great phones, but I crave realestate. The HTC HD2 (is of course a winmo phone) looks the biz and with HTC's UI, I reckon will win over a few hearts.

This will definately be my next upgrade - unless they release the Android 2.0 equivalent at the same time...

T-mobile is suppose to carry the Nokia N900 I am not sure if they will support all the features though or what kind of plan they will have for it, so I'm waiting to see.

RE: Would somebody please explain to me...
By akse on 10/28/2009 2:12:50 PM , Rating: 2
Well I'm not sure if Resistive Touch is a reason to not be in the list, in N900 it has been implemented in a lot better way than any before so far, also it allows use to use the screen with basically anything.

About MMS there is just no software for if yet, not sure if they'll add it now as they delayed the release. Anyways I use MMS once or twice a year :)

Anyways I preordered N900.

RE: ANYTHING

That's what you get for getting the version that was neutered @ Verizon's request! I choose to vote with my dollars and not support a provider that always finds a way to castrate its own phones!

I have friends with the Touch Pro 1 (on Sprint and AT&T) and they are big fans of the phone! And I love my Touch Pro 2 personally (I skipped the 1 b/c I saw the 2 coming on HTC's website and I knew that it'd be a huge upgrade from the 1).

Oh and can we stop this megapixel crap with cameras on phones. I dont care that you've put a 8 or 12MP sensor in the phone if you just team it up with a crappy 10c plastic lens.

If you want a proper usuable camera then go down to a 3.2MP and give it a decent lens. At least it will be useful.

I did not want an iPhone while I watched my friends and coworkers jump on that bandwagon. I knew it was the best phone, I just couldn't submit to using itunes for any reason.

So I have my hopes on android. While I do see Google as potentially evil, right now they are far better than Apple, and slightly better than Microsoft, in my book. At least Google completely embraces Open source and open development, unlike the other two.

I'm holding out for the rumored version of the HTC HD2 Pro (HD2 w/ Keyboard).

1GHz., 448MB RAM, 4.3" Capacitive Touch, Headphone Jack, Awesome keyboard (if anything like the Touch Pro 2's Keyboard), etc. WinMo 7 compatible (it at least meets the specs) and XDA support (would not buy a phone w/o XDA Backing it up!).
