Despite iPhone issues, life is good for Apple, thanks to the best-selling iPad

In response to record demand for the Apple iPad, Apple, Inc. is stepping up its production efforts.  As of last month the Cupertino giant topped 3 million units sold worldwide.

Apple originally set a goal of reaching production of 2.5 million units a month to be reached by December, but it now appears that it may hit that number well ahead of schedule, in response to high demand.

According to Digitimes Research:
Apple is estimated to have outsourced 2.3-2.35 million iPads to Taiwan players in July with 58-60% for the Wi-Fi and 3G hybrid model despite Wi-Fi only models having stronger sales in the first half of 2010, Kuo noted.
That's up greatly from the 1.2 million units that Digitimes Research estimated in June.  And it's way above the 700,000 units that the iPad began shipping per month at launch in April (U.S.).

The move indicates two things -- first that Apple plans on selling a lot more iPads, and second that it's trying to push the public to make those sales of the more lucrative 3G-ready iPad (a move its U.S. carrier AT&T is surely excited about).

The wildest analyst estimates pegged the iPad at selling 8 million units this year.  If Apple can continue to quickly ramp up production, though, it stands to sell as many as 16-18 million units this year.  We'd be conservative, bumping our previous estimate to 15 million units for the year.

This terrific sales success is great news for Apple on a number of levels.  First, it establishes the company as the top player in a promising emerging market.  Second it should lead to a "halo effect" boosting sales of other Apple products.  And finally, it should help Apple to overcome the negative publicity of the numerous issues that the iPhone 4 suffered -- including signal woes, proximity sensor malfunctions, and not fully cured sealants.

Later this month the iPad will come to more countries overseas, including Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore, which should help to continue to stoke the sales flame.

Who cares? Can we move on to the next fad yet?

The next fad is unlikely to be as innovative and incredible as Apple's state of the art technology. The Ipad is pushing computer technology forward with its state of the art multitasking, sleek and shiny workstation. Wave goodbye to loading screens and incompatible apps as Apple's Incredexperience(TM) technology revolutionises the industry and delivers the biggest breakthrough in technology since the invention of the unbreakable, solar-panelled calculator.

"Quadrillity: Who cares?"

I think it's of interest to those thinking about the politics of the internet... will Apple manage to push HTML5 to the fore or will they be forced by the popularity of flash enabled devices to backtrack and implement it in iOS.

2.3 million sales of the iPad/month represents quite a market and quite a Safari browser segment to have to cater to.

Think about it this way:
Netbooks sales were the phenomenon of computer sales over the last couple of years. How many?

85 million in 2.5 years... a big important market.

If these iPad sales maintain current momentum over a similar period (remember they are only just being rolled out worldwide), without any increase at all they would make a market about 80% of the netbook market... about 70 million units (2.3 x 30months).

Back in their struggling years Apple had about 25 million active users and sold about 4 million Macs annually.

This level of iPad sales, when added to iPhone, iPod Touch and the revitalised Mac sales growth (Apple now sell in a quarter what they sold in some years) changes the politics of the web... in a good way.

That Microsoft tactic of 'embrace and extend' (the one that corrupted the HTML in IE6 and Front Page)... that's a no gamer in the face of this market... and I think that's good for PC users too. It forces competition on quality rather than gaming the standards.

So, who cares? I do. Perhaps you should too. Just a though.

Another idea:
What do you think was the impetus for Microsoft to work hard on Windows 7?

Now you might say: sales.

Well think about it. There is a danger for Microsoft in making a decent version of Windows. Software doesn't suffer failure, like hardware does.

Lets call it the XP factor: MS make a good enough version of Windows and sales can dry up. It's very hard to keep pushing the upgrade cycle if people are satisfied with what they have... especially if many of those sales are to banks who just run a browser and Excel.

Why take the risk? '95 wasn't stable... '98 sales didn't suffer
'98 wasn't stable... ME didn't suffer
ME wasn't stable XP didn't suffer.

But XP and 2000 were road blocks for Microsoft... they were good.

Vista wasn't good so it didn't hinder Windows 7... but XP is still there hampering sales.

Competition forces Microsoft to compete on quality... it forces them to produce road blocks to future versions.

Apple doesn't suffer from this because of the hardware + OS tie-in.
Microsoft can't rely on that.

So competition is our friend, in many ways.

You can google any of those techs and find who really invented them. The MP3 player, Cell phone and tablet computer being part of that list as well.

If this guy really gets paid to advertise as someone else stated, all he's doing is hurting the company's reputation, not helping it. I tend to think based on the few posts I've seen from him that he's just trying to piss people off and gets a kick out of their responses. Nobody is that dumb to think that Apple invented every single piece of tech we have today, especially when a simple internet search can tell you who invented what.

Does Safari send you to propaganda websites when you search for anything related to Apple? I wouldn't doubt it since this guy's links are also not what they seem - Don't click on his links, they don't take you to the website he says they do.

It's a damn shame that all the other oems didn't take a shot at something like the iPad but then again, I'm sure that it would be ignored if they did for one simple reason, 'their devices wouldn't have an apple logo on the front'.

Sure, we've had UMPCS(Mids when renamed for no reason), convertible laptops and archos devices but again, the damn apple brought it all together.

Even thought it HURTS to say this,m respect to apple. On the other hand, no respect at ALL for the people who have purchased a locked down slice of machinery that has to have iTunes to do many, many things. Very silly. I do hope that the trend moves away from apple before the majority get locked in.

Apple = their way and thats it.

Several other OEMs did take a shot at it. The reason it hasn't worked until Apple did it is the same reason the iPod now dominates the MP3 player market despite a substandard feature set and exorbitant pricing - the user interface is simple, clean, and effective. Previous attempts at the tablet format were crippled by Microsoft's Windows for Mobiles OS. While Windows may be fine for the desktop (people who've used a Mac may call it "adequate"), as a tablet OS it really, really sucks.

Like you I despise how Apple has locked down just about everything with their products and refuse to buy one because of it. But there's one thing they do, they've always done, right - user interfaces. Clean, simple, and effective - people like that, and it drives their sales. Apple thinks about what the end-user experience will be like, and builds their UI around that. Not the other way around.

The reason Linux hasn't taken off is because the developers (bless their hard work) do it the opposite way. They frequently have a certain vision for how the UI should work and build around that with little consideration for the end user. What results is a confusing, inconsistent, and frequently clumsy conglomeration of different UIs with endless opportunities to confuse r the end user. The CUPS graphical configuration applet a few years back was a perfect example. It required you to pick just about every option available, which was great for the developers. But for end users who didn't know the technical details about printer drivers and configuration, they practically had to learn everything the developers knew in order to navigate the interface. It didn't even have default "common sense" choices - a neophyte end user had to guess which settings would be best for him.

You don't need iTunes at all, except to setup a basic account. After that, you do everything on the iPad itself - its much easier that way. If you had to do iTunes for everything it would suck...but you don't, so it doesn't. You only need iTunes to upgrade the firmware, get your music library across (one time), or do a backup. Yes, you do need iTunes, but you don't need to use it very often. For my phone, I only use iTunes every 6 months, just for backup.

Unless your music/video collection happens to be larger than the iPad's storage. Then you'll randomly swap things in and out.

Course why bother. The iPhone 4 is better at surfing the web, than the device they created to surf the web with.

Only company I've seen scrap plans so far was HP. I think they did that due them buying Palm. They probably want to create a tablet using the PalmOS, instead of Win7.

I don't know why. The HP TM2T tablet runs Win7 and it's awesome. I wish it Pro instead of Home Premium, just for the additional language packs, but whatever.

Other OEMs did make something like that iPad and before it. They didn't advertise it as heavily, nor did they have a cult following.

Internet tablets? Ask Archos about theirs. Been out for over a year. iRiver has made the same thing, they just didn't release them outside of Korea.

Me, no thanks. I bought myself a nice HP TM2T tablet. Watching all my mkv, ogm, wmv, etc videos on it, surfing the web, listening to ape, ogg, mp3, flac, etc music, and multitasking like a mad man. I'll probably get a 3g usb stick and GPS usb stick for it, when I make my road trips. Been using it for my twice a month trips to Seoul.

iPad? Pffff...no thanks. A toy doesn't work for my mobile needs.

Don't know how it is where you live, but around 85% of the people I see while commuting every day (around Stockholm) have iPhones. Every winter, regardless of the actual weather conditions, 85% of Stockholmers wear Canada Goose jackets. Of those not using white earbuds, 85% use Koss Porta Pros, the rest some sort of blingey can or the other. In two years, I'm the only one I've seen using HD25s, kind of the ultimate portable set of cans.
People here are like sheep, and since they're baaahing 'Baahhaaaapple' alot lately, my next phone will be one of the less breakable phones. I also refuse to half shout over the phone for 20+ in a public location, so clearly I should move the hell away from our beloved capital.

Why apple sucks:

---------------------------

1 they allegedly spy on users with their GPS service.

2 they dismiss major software/hardware problems as user error and never rectify the situation.

3 their iphone/ipad/itouch has no standard file explorer (ie windows explorer/finder(mac)/konquerer/dolphin(linux))

4 they take other peoples technology and rebrand it as their own claiming it's innovative (there are COUNTLESS examples so i'm not even going to bother)

5 their hardware is usually years behind the competition and yet somehow more expensive at retail market.

6 they artificially prop up their price tag to seem exclusive and premium when in reality they are on par with their competitor AT BEST!

7 it took them how long to figure out that 2 button mice are better than 1 button mice?

8 itunes ('nuff said)

9 proprietary - all their crap is proprietary, if you need to fix something you have no options other than returning to apple to put up with even more of their crap and high prices (have fun)

10 security - contrary to popular opinion macs are in NO way more secure than any of their competitors (quite the opposite really)

11 Lies - they sell their crap by marketing alone, they aren't actually better... they just have everyone convinced they are... how they don't get false advertising charges brought against them is beyond me.

12 control - the amount of control apple has over your life once you buy into their crap is astounding!

13 quality control (i think we all have seen those issues in the news)

14 smug - a common affliction apparently related to the use of an apple product of which the only cure seems to be a 2x4 to the back of the skull. :)

15 the name apple... it's just stupid.

16 they pioneered the all in one computers which were hard to work on and difficult to fix and annoying at best.

17 closed system... can’t stand ‘em!

18 contrary to the apple mantra of idiot proof, it's ok to leave toggling advanced features in place so that you can actually have some measure of control over your own system.

19 customizable interface, of which there is virtually NONE in mac osx

20 and last but not least... there is no functioning address bar in finder!!!!! Yes you can view where you’ve been but you can’t type where you’re going and actually hope to get there as you can in EVERY other os that I can think of! God smite them for this travesty.

---------------------------

these are in no particular order, just wrote them as i thought them. i could go on but any more will make me vomit and i don't wanna clean puke off my keyboard.

21 non replaceable battery in the iphone.

22 $80 something dollar charge and a week or so without your phone to do something i can do with > $50 in about 10 seconds (replace the battery)

23 mac osx is limited to ONLY mac computers (annoying)

24 mac osx's clunky gnome like interface

25 quicktime, itunes, safari trying to bundle itself onto our computers.

26 mac osx built around bsd/unix and yet a lot of what makes bsd/unix great is brutally dumbed down and crippled

27 the only stock calculator app is a widget (as far as i know)

28 widget implementation isn't NEARLY as good as on other systems (windows vista/7 and KDE (linux) are much better in my opinion)

29 no flash on ipad (if you don't like flash great but if it lives or dies should be up to the market and no mr jobs)

30 cleaning the puke off my keyboard after having written 30 reasons why apple sucks (some of them for humor reasons like this line here and others to be taken more seriously such as the line above).

by the way, i don't consider myself young... but at 26 i'm not exactly old either.

quote:
good lord, none of your drivel was true... you just dislike high quality products. why are you so jealous of Macs? you seem to have a mental problem.

I don't care isn't an argument, it's a defense. instead of using copy/paste to reiterate it for all of my lines you could have just simply said "i disagree" and i would have been fine with that. :D

i'll concede on this point, however i'll add one more bit to make it more valid again.

1. the replacement batter (while neat-o, and something i didn't know about) is 3rd party, not that that's bad or anything. It just wasn't apples intention. meaning they still suck for not having user replaceable batteries. The price on this is however good.

2. iphone batteries get between 2-3 years of life before they start to die off. this is adequate as most people replace their phones at around the 2 year mark anyway... i get that. user replaceable batteries from the factory are my preference, i'm not one for form over function.

the battery thing is one of the lesser issues i have with the iphone though so this, while great, doesn't solve much for me.

what are you talking about, i virtualize osx on my vmware machine all the time (and this is on top of windows vista/7!

there are plenty of hackintoshes out there to prove this point wrong... apple artificially breaks compatibility by not putting in support for a lot of processors, among other things. which i can understand because they themselves don't use those processors and this wouldn't be so bad until you read the EULA which says it can only be installed on a mac. so really the only reason other computers "aren't advanced enough (LOL)" to run mac osx is because of the EULA!

There is only one problem with what you've said: They are selling these computers by the millions.
Whether we like it or not "the buyer is always right".
While I wouldn't go so far as to suggest this is a "new technology" or a "game changer", if the figures mentioned are true, and they probably are, then don't be surprised if the next computer you buy is an iPad lookalike, and don't be surprised if the OS on it is different from your now preferred supplier.

1 - i always build my own systems... unless it's a laptop-esque device where i buy the best thing that fits my needs and format it with whatever os i prefer at the time.

2 - the os thing... good luck with that, i always purchase/download my own oses and load my preference regardless of what's on the device. Windows/Linux aren't going anywhere anytime soon and the only market i'm currently worrying about this reality with as of now is the phone market because windows phone 7 scares me and android isn't a viable alternative as far as i'm concerned.

3 - "They are selling these computers by the millions." - never said this wasn't the case. These days, any company with a serious ad agency on retainer (like TBWA/Chiat/Day, for example) is going to have kids trolling boards to make sure the brand gets the proper spin.

That's why guys like this appear and stick around, despite an overwhelmingly negative response. It's their job.

Apple (or whoever, it's not like it's just them) gets the online representation they want while keeping clean hands, and the ad agency gets paid while keeping the interns busy.

If people want the best in computing, they go anywhere but Apple. Better hardware and performance for a cheaper price. More compatibility with other hardware and software, just plain more options. If people want to buy toys, they buy Apple. If they want the basic car without power windows, door locks, or the ability to choose which radio station they listen to, they buy Apple.

Your imagery just brought out in me ( at least) a very evil thought.... apple getting into the car market. I can just imagine it, no user-replaceable parts, overly high service costs, worst motors on the market... But hey it is magical and revolutionary - and it has an apple logo on the hood!

11 Lies - they sell their crap by marketing alone, they aren't actually better... they just have everyone convinced they are... how they don't get false advertising charges brought against them is beyond me.

Charges were brought up against Apple in the UK (and AFAIK in Germany) forcing Apple to include the information that the advertisement is speeded up and not a true depiction of the IPhones/Ipads speed in the TV and Cinema Ads.

@ Luticus,

It's truly amazing how ignorant you are about Apple computers. And this coming from someone who thinks the iPad is silly and useless. Go back to your tinker toy peecee, with your closed, broken, virus-riddled, and proprietary Microsoft OS.

LMFAO!! This iSmug lover here just sounded like Jobs on Adobes "proprietary" software.

Since Apple is not proprietary, it is Open Source, You can build your own MAC from the same Intel chipset motherboards they come with in their MAC brand. Oh yeah what are we thinking here guys!?!?!?!

Apple built a non proprietary system, lets all ditch Windows!, Apples NEVER get MAC Viruses, nope

Bill Gates DAMN YOU!!!

meh, I am 36, don't own anything made by Apple & really no reason to, & it's great to see the recession is over that so many are buying these at an alarming rate.

Well played, Stevie Wonder

my bad, you were posting some stuff last month for the first time.

Every comment you have ever written on this site is pro Apple BS fanboyism at its best.

This is probably reader1's other account that he uses to uprate himself lol
