When you can actually get through to the Apple Store, this is what you'll see.
Apple's iPhone 4 pre-orders are off to a rocky start

Well, today is the day that iPhone junkies around the world have been waiting for -- today is the first day that Apple is taking pre-orders for the iPhone 4. However, trying to order an iPhone 4 from Apple's website this morning has been an exercise in futility.

The Apple Store came online for pre-orders around 4am EST, but was quickly bombarded with requests. Many people trying to get an iPhone 4 were greeted with error messages or notices stating "Please wait while we access your AT&T account information."

After a few hours of errors and polite messages, Apple took the site down around 6am and put up its friendly "We'll be back soon" Post-it note. Since that time, it's been up and down for the past two and a half hours. Currently, the site is down yet again.

To add insult to injury, those looking to get their hands on a white iPhone 4 can't even pre-order it from Apple (or anywhere else). Apple apparently doesn't have enough stock to satisfy demand, so it's just going to make folks wait a while longer before its makes the white 16GB and 32GB SKUs available.

Folks who go through AT&T's website to order an iPhone 4 are having better luck grabbing a pre-order (sans the white models), but there's yet another hitch that could stop some customers in their tracks. Some people with AT&T Premier accounts aren't even able to order the iPhone 4 because it doesn't show up in their list of available phones.

The only option is to call up AT&T and have them temporarily disable your FAN#. By doing this, the iPhone 4 immediately shows up in your list of available phones, but you lose your monthly discount on phone service (this discount can range from 10% to 20% or more for some customers). However, it could take up to two billing cycles for you to be able to add your FAN# back to your account to get your discounts again.

That's a lot of trouble to simply get an iPhone 4 on launch day, but many people are choosing that route.

Brick and mortar stores like Best Buy, Walmart, and Radio Shack are supposed to have their own in-store pre-order programs in place for the iPhone 4, so if you want to go that route, you have three additional options.

For those that have been living under a rock, the iPhone will be released on June 24. It features an Apple A4 processor, a new 640x960 display, and glass covering both the screen and the back of the device. It is priced at $199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB model with a new two-year contract.

upgraded from the 3gs on an individual plan. bumped voice to unlimited, unlimited text, and 2GB PRO with tethering plan.

Hrmmm i guess i should have read the choices on the plans more carefully. I don't think tethering was an option on the original unlimited data plan. Was this option only available for plans withe 2GB cap?

It isn't. Want tethering? You have to move to one of the limited plans. Deal with it.

Why is tethering an option on a limited plan? If you're being charged per GB, what do they care if the data is going to your phone or your computer?

Its your money not mine, but for the sake of my own curiousity...please tell me you actually NEED and USE 2 GB and unlimited text/voice....and not just spending $xxx.xx per month on a phone plane for "bragging rights"....(a practice I've NEVER understood from ANYONE)....

*phone plan, not phone plane.....though that would be interesting I guess...a phone that turns into a plane? :)

until ATT announced the data caps so I decided to stick with Sprint.

Now Im enjoying my EVO 4g at 4 times the speed of ATT 3g network on a beautiful 4.3 inch screen and a super fast cpu all while getting a open and customizable phone OS that wont dictate when I can and cannot go piss, breathe, etc..., and all while paying a sh!tload less than you ATT suckers.

Enjoy your crapple and data caps.

So you were going to get the iPhone 4 if not for the data cap, but now you list off all the reasons the EVO is better? Either sounds like you weren't going to get one in the first place, or you're trying to justify going with something else.

Also, you're pretty lucky if you're in one of the very few places that actually has 4G Sprint coverage.

Well actually before the evo sprint had crap for phones and I was really considering moving to the Iphone. I know the Evo was announced a while back but I hadnt counted on it being great given sprints track record with phones. Luckily that all changed for me when I was able to go to the store and play with one to see just how great the EVO is and then the nail in the coffin was ATT data cap announcement.

By isorfir on 6/15/2010 2:03:37 PM , Rating: 2
Okay, that makes sense. It does look like a good phone. Sucks that it doesn't have quite the resolution as the new iPhone (despite the larger display?), but all things considered, they both look really good.

I'd be dismayed about the data cap too on AT&T if I didn't get grandfathered in on the unlimited.

Iam a current ATT cellular subscriber.
I have the unlimited data plan and considering downgrading voluntarily. I surf the web more then a person should on a phone, including goolg'ing whatever , play online games and use facebook on my phone once or twice a day.. and I use 1 to 1.5 GB a month and thats heavy use. People using 3,4 GB need to enjoy the web on a PC and get a job because they must have all day to surf in mommy and daddys basement!

All this talk of "2 GB is enough" reminds me of countless times in past computer history. 640k was enough. A 20 MB hard drive was enough. 256 MB of RAM was enough. 1.5 Mbps DSL/Cable was enough. etc.

The only true thing I've found about computer technology is that when capacity expands, content will increase to fill it. 5 years ago people on Sprint were going nuts when Sprint started shutting off 3G data service to your phone if you went over about 50 MB/month. Cellular data was sold per kB. 2GB may seem like enough now, but based on past history it's a pretty sure bet that it'll be woefully inadequate in 5 years.

it's on a WAY better network

Really? I'm not about to say AT&T isn't without it's problems, but I moved away from Sprint because of their network. Take a look at their coverage map. If you ever have to be on the move, you're going to drop a call :(

I used to travel alot for my work. My company gave me a phone on Verizon that was identical to the one I had on Spring. I stopped using the Verizon one after a while.

Oh, well if it works, by all means! It doesn't help that where I live, AT&T and Verizon have the entire state covered, and Sprint has a couple of mud puddles :(

All this time I just been using it to check email, text (once in a great while - ie. generally replying to them not creating them) and making calls....

Funny. I'm not under a rock... but I don't wet myself when Apple releases a new product. This isn't the second-coming, it's just a phone.

Can't said I completely disagree with you...but it is a "tech" site so a part of me is thinking "what do you expect?"...

Kind of like people go ga-ga over a new ferrari or lambo on a performance car website and then you read a post about someone going "dude its just a car relax...."

(That I do not have an Iphone, nor am I getting one)

This is a tech related site and like Apple or not, their products do create huge waves of news and excitement in the tech industry (and they sell enough to back it up). So if you follow tech related news at all (which you do, assuming you're commenting on this site and reading the articles), then yes, you would have to be living under a rock to miss its announcement.

Its amazing how much some people on this site will hate and downplay anything Apple does when they really have created an exciting product worthy of a lot of the attention its been given lately. If Microsoft came out with the exact same phone as this in response to Apple's 3GS, this site would go crazy with how much better it is and so on.

How about you judge the product on its actual merits not its moniker?

I ordered mine through AT&T's website this morning (7AM EST). I ordered one for both myself and my wife. We were both elligable for upgrade and we are on a discounted plan through her work. The iPhone 4 showed up on the list just fine. I was pleasantly surprised that the website had no lag or issues. I did notice that there were no options to choose the 16GB model; only the 32GB black model was available. That was no issue since we both wanted the 32GB black phones anyways. I was also able to choose my current data plan as an option which I was very happy about since I still have the unlimited data plan without the 2GB cap. Although when I looked at my data usage history, I barely hit over 300MB a month. This is probably due to the fact that i have wifi access at work and at home. I wonder how much that will go up with the new facetime (video conferencing) feature. Hopefully they will arrive on time, but if it doesn't, LIFE WILL GO ON :)

RE: no problems here
By KrayLoN on 6/15/2010 9:34:02 AM , Rating: 2
BTW (before I am flamed lol) I know the facetime wont affect data usage while I'm on wifi BUT I can see myself using this feature more than surfing the internet when I am not in the office or at home. Just curious how much more my data usage will go up with this feature. I remember something being blogged about the ability to MMS video? I wonder if they will put a cap on the size or quality of the video because I can see sending HD video clips taking up a lot of bandwidth. Maybe they will restrict that only to wifi connections? Who knows....

RE: no problems here
By Paladin21 on 6/15/2010 9:39:09 AM , Rating: 2
It "currently" only works on wifi, so no data worries. At some point it is supposed to start working on 3g, but that's up to AT&T, and we know how proactive they were on enabling tethering, and MMS, and.... Well, you get the picture.

Facetime is restricted to Wifi so it STILL won't affect your usage.

FAN Issues

It's aggravating that AT&T still hasn't fixed the issue with upgrading a phone when you have a corporate discount in place. 2 years ago when I bought the iPhone 3G they were not able to process my upgrade because I had a corporate discount in place. I had to call them, get the discount removed, upgrade the phone, then have them add the discount back. That's ridiculous. Two years later, they still have this issue???

I had numerous problems from 4am. As reported there are ZERO iPhones (even 3GS) that are available for Premier accounts on AT&T's website. I had to call in this morning. I was asked if I wanted White or Black. I wanted Black. But was strange to hear I was being offered a White iPhone 4 while it's being reported that no one is being offered a White Version.

I was having trouble ordering until I used safari. After 3 hrs of trying, I decided to try Safari and I ordered both in under 5 min.
Now the Sprint people that are boasting that "They were going to switch to the Iphone" Are full of it. Why now? Why after the 4th version. You guys are using inferior phones on an inferior network. Who by the way are stuck in those contracts. So find an EVO site and enjoy.
