Apple has its say in the AT&T vs Verizon catfight

Apple's iPhone may be the darling of the consumer smartphone market, but the phone is not without its faults. One of the problems facing the iPhone doesn't come from a limitation of the device itself, but rather from the network that is uses in the United States: AT&T.

Verizon pounced on this weakness and decided to pour more salt in the wounds with its "There's a map for that" ads. Verizon went even further with a second round of ads which were highlighted by the "Island of Misfit Toys" commercial.

Up until this point, Apple has remained quiet on the sidelines as both its cash cow and its exclusive U.S. service provider were battered by Verizon. Now Apple has stepped up with two new commercials of its own according to Engadget.

The new commercials will air tonight and will tout functionality that Verizon phones lack -- the ability to make 3G calls and receive/transmit cellular data at the same time. The commercials point out the iPhone's ability to not only talk to people on the phone, but also do things such as check email, check restaurant reservations with the OpenTable app, get directions using the Maps app, and surf the web.

Unfortunately, the two ads still don't address the issue of AT&T's 3G coverage or quality in the U.S. And the ads of course don't mention that simultaneous talk/data isn't possible when used with AT&T's EDGE data service -- a service that many iPhone users have to fall back on when their 3G coverage falls short.

Best part of those commercials is the fact that in very tiny gray letters below the AT&T and iPhone logos is a line that reads:

"3G network on available in all areas."

I gotta say, Verizon may not have the iPhone but at least I can make a relatively clear call and have it rarely get dropped. I wonder if the Palm Pre coming to Verizon will smash any hope of getting an iPhone on Verizon with out having to hack it.

The Pre, or something just like it, will be at Verizon next quarter. The Global iPhone will likely arrive at Verizon next fall.

I hate this exclusivity $#!^. Strong business is made of alliances, but it sure would be nice if AT&T and the like 1st attempted to improve quality, strength, and capability of service & support to attract customers, rather than spending vast $#!^loads of money (that gets passed on to the customers' monthly bills) on exclusive-device contracts and advertisements that get the childish "last word" for all of 2 weeks before the next competitor's commercial is released.

We fought for years to get the government to say that cell providers had to allow us to unlock phones and then a bunch of idiots signed contracts agreeing to use a locked phone on a crappy network.....

Anyone else getting tired of seeing so much iPhone/Apple/ATT/Verizion in the news?
Anyone else getting tired of hearing mac haters hate?
Anyone else getting tired of hearing mac lovers love?

AM I, SERIOUSLY

First off, it's a great phone. If you believe otherwise, you're just being a snob. Secondly, ATTs network is inferior to Verizions. Yes, we all know this. We can say it because it's the truth. HOWEVER, most of the time, it's not an issue. I have yet to be ANYWHERE where I don't get a 3G connection. But in that I understand, I am where I am and it works. If I were traveling a lot I would not be with ATT. But for the majority of people out there on ATT, all this nonsense all you apple/att haters talk about isn't a factor.

You sit here and laugh and say all this stuff about iphones and att and how much better your HTC and Verizion are. Well really, it's the 99% satisfied iPhone users that are laughing at you spend all of this time repeating the same f**kin nonsense.

If you don't like, don't buy it. It's that simple. Now I'll wait for all you to vote this down, and I'm sure you all will. I just had to rant because I come to this site to read tech news and all it ends up being is a bunch or nerds or haters touting that their s**t don't stink. Pathetic.

There is a reason I am a happy HTC Hero owner. Even in Central Wisconsin, I can get great 3G service and excellent cell reception off Sprint towers (even in the hinterlands of the northern lakes and forests), but ATT is still Edge anyplace north of Milwaukee and the service disappears the moment you leave the freeway. And I am not making this up...ATT actually uses GPRS around here, in areas that Verizon and Sprint are blazing through.

I laugh at my iPhone toting friends that cant use most of the features that made it fun. Cant stream video, cant stream audio and web pages that load so slowly that my old Palm Centro was fast by comparison. GPRS on an iPhone is truly funny to watch.

If anything, the new ads from ATT and Apple are more confusing than the Verizon ones. Anybody that thinks GPRS=Edge=3G is either dumb or confused and this is exactly what they are trying to sell.

I agree. I think Apple may find that Verizon is not Microsoft and will not hold back if Apple sticks their nose to far in. The possibilities for responding to the Apple Commercials have seriously funny possibilities. Maybe a guy trying to use data and cellular simultaneously walking down a street and he keeps going back and forth between 3G and Edge networks then end with him walking into a building and everything just quits working.

I would just like to point out that as a data-heavy iPhone user, I find Edge coverage to be quite satisfactory for literally everything except Pandora which I use mainly at work and home (WiFi) anyway. I really don't see what the big fuss is about.

That being said, I would love to take my phone over to T-Mobile as soon as my contract expires for pricing purposes. If you're not looking for a specific phone, it is almost silly to have either ATT or Verison in this day and age.

Verizon: Best Network, average devices
AT&T: Coolest smartphone, fair but improving connectivity
T-Mobile: Good price and acceptable quality (little 3G)
Sprint: Best price, worst service and connectivity
Cricket or MetroPCS: I don't have any money and never stray far from the bus lines

It follows the same economic model as everything else

good function
good device
good price

Pick your order

I understand what you were trying to do, but you have it so wrong on quite a few points.

Verizon - Best 3g network, highest priced call network, locked in phones
AT&T - Trendiest smartphone, largest call/data network, smallest 3g network of the major 3.
T-Mobile - 2nd smallest player with 3g, price used to be good now way too high
Sprint - best priced 3g/call plans on a real network, pray you never have to call them
Criket/Metro PCS - Smallest networks with almost no 3g, priced however based on consumer reality

The hatred I see/hear for Metro/Criket is astounding. I have to chalk it up to people who are afraid to be without coverage in areas they never visit and pay the exhorbitant prices of the major carriers based on that. I have Metro simply because I can go anywhere I normally go and still make calls and use GPS and surf the web and make 411 calls etc... for $50 a month. Try that with any other carrier and see what your bill looks like. If I do someday stray off the beaten path and can't make a call I can still send a friend a text message and have him/her call a tow truck for me if needed. That's right if you get the $45 plan you can text where there is some type of phone service available to anybody. And if it's a real emergency 911 still works anywhere even with a disconnected phone.

What about talk on the phone while using GPS?
Data + voice!

What data is useful while you're on the phone?
What data is useful when you get a phone call?

GPS nav (say you're driving) shouldn't go away just because you get a phone call. The same with browsing the web, reading email, etc. It's called "multitasking".

The iPhone doesn't allow app multitasking, but it's got built in multitasking for maps, voice, email, web, SMS, and search.

RE: what the?

Good post. Also, the iPhone's push notifications solved 70-80% of any "multitasking" issues that I ever encountered while sacrificing very little battery life.

Speaking of 3.0 updates though, am I the only person in the world who wishes the phone never adopted cut/copy/paste? It has been useful to me maybe once while causing a world of pain when trying to put cursors on mistyped words.

...it would take a cellular Armageddon for me to go back.

In my area (North Eastern Connecticut), dropped calls and bad 3G connectivity aren't the only problem. There are literally several-mile long stretches along well traveled highways that have no service. I was lucky enough not to get stranded in any of those far-too-numerous areas while I had AT&T, but it defeated one of the primary reasons I always carry my phone. Changing a flat is no big deal, but I don't exactly have a spare alternator or fuel pump in my trunk.

AT&T can gloat about how awesome the iPhone is for now, but they had better have a bigger plan for the future. Otherwise they may be looking at a very grim situation in the next 5-10 years.

By GruntboyX on 11/23/2009 9:44:49 PM , Rating: 2
Ok AT&T makes a good point. But it doesn't do any good if you cant get 3G service. 3G service is necessary for that feature to work.

The point is: Features are great, but if you don't have coverage then its a pretty awesome brick you have there.

Coverage is everything. Its Number 1. AT&t fails in this department. Therefore all other things are mute.

Its like having a guy who is a really good base runner. But if he strikes out all the time and never gets on base, his talent is worthless. (sorry for the baseball analogy).

ATT can always improve signal but Verizon would have to change thier whole network structure to be able to do voice and data...at the same time. Again, I want to use all the features of my smartphone not just some...

Um, no. Most people talk on a cell phone by holding it up to the side of their face. You know, so they can hear what's being said, and talk into the microphone. I don't see how you can do any of the things you listed while holding the phone off to the side of your head. The youtube example is especially ludicrous, given that you wouldn't be able to coherently listen to both the phone call and the youtube audio at the same time.

Granted, you can resolve the issue by using the phone in speakerphone mode, if you don't mind that everyone around you is able to listen in on your conversation, or that everyone around you is going to think that you're a jerk for being so damned loud even if you don't care about them eavesdropping on your call.

I think the utility of being able to receive data simultaneously while on a call is extremely limited. Maybe it would be useful in gameshow "phone a friend" type scenarios, where you could google for the answer while keeping your friend on the line, but that's about it. I think that Apple either has a poorly thought out ad-campaign on their hands, or they seriously think that the majority of people are stupid enough to buy their argument that an almost useless feature makes their phone better than the competition.

All iPhones come with these things called headphones. you put each little ear bud in your ears and one side has a mic on it. Now you can talk on your phone without it next to your ear. They also make things things called bluetooth headsets that work in the same way but wirelessly and most of the time only go to one ear. None the less you'll see many business people with them on their ears all the time.

Point being most new phones are beyond having to have the phone next to your head in order for you to make a call.

The only big exception I've seen have been business-people, who very often have a bluetooth headset (though it isn't always being used with an iphone). I don't think most consumers are quite there yet, however. The average person on the street is still holding the iphone up to their face to talk just like they would with any other cell phone.

I just tested it.

On Verizon's Droid I can run any of my applications while on a voice call. So if you want to play games while attending a conference call (on speakerphone) knock yourself out. I think I would rather have a device that actually works well as a phone.

Every time I go to an NFL game I get a kick out of all of the people around me trying to get their phones to work (to check scores or call the wife) and they can't even connect. I still have not had a failure to connect or dropped call that wasn't caused by driving into a canyon.

Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one that experiences that. My wife does the same thing to me. She completely shuts down when she is freaking out. When I ask her a question, she just says, "I don't know!!!". Finally I tell her to use her own iPhone, and she says, "I don't know how to read a map". Then I say, "Well, I guess you are SoA" and hang up. By the way, we're still happily married. :)

The 5 bars means you have a good cell reception, the 3G is either on or off, it doesn't usually matter how many bars it has.

Hey, I live in the Twin Cities too. Perhaps I know you. FYI-I also get full bars out in the Burbs of Minneapolis.

Honestly, what do you two guys expect? You live in a densely populated metropolitan and suburban area. Why wouldn't you get good coverage there?

Try coming down south to the Mankato rural areas and see if you can make those claims.

AT&T: You are wonderful.
Verizon: Thank you; I've worked hard to become so.
AT&T: I admit it, you are better than I am.
Verizon: Then why are you smiling?
AT&T: Because I know something you don't know.
Verizon: And what is that?
AT&T: I... am not left-handed.
[Moves his sword to his right hand and gains an advantage]
Verizon: You are amazing.
AT&T: I ought to be, after 20 years.
Verizon: Oh, there's something I ought to tell you.
AT&T: Tell me.
Verizon: I'm not left-handed either.

Hehe... I've had both, and I love the apps on the iPhone, ocarina in particular, but Verizon has better coverage. :)

By the way, it's spelled REPETITIVE , not repeatative.

I was thinking the same thing along having read 4 out of the 6 paragraphs and still hadn't gotten to the point where AT&T is "throwing its hat into the ring." But it looks like it has been edited and some of the irrelevant filler removed.

How is 30 percent drop rate not relevant? Is this not about poor service? I would say 30 percent is pretty poor IMO.

reminds me of the initial Xbox 360 RROD rates. Problem solved, but problem still happened.

Being dubious about future Microsoft products is completely valid. (see "Windows Vista*")

(*eventually a good operating system, but did have some serious problems to start, first and foremost being the anti-Vista PR. while fine today, Vista will be a catchphrase associated with "rushed, garbage**" for a long time)

(**inb4 "iPod not garbage durf durf")

Because it's not verified and not even from AT&T, that's why. It's speculation from a guy working at the Genius Bar at an Apple store. He has no idea what the drop rate on the AT&T network is.

By Leper Messiah on 11/25/2009 9:35:08 AM , Rating: 2
AT&T and Apple both refuse to offer any concrete data on iphone drop rates in metropolitan areas. I'm sure with all the press that story has gotten on line, if they had something that would dispute it easily, they would jump at the opportunity to refute it.

because that is in one small location that people seems to fixate on and it doesn't even happen anymore. IT'S BEEN FIXED! It does not reflect ATT's service as a whole anyways. That is why it's irrelevant.
