The new iPod Touch apparently had a camera at one time, but Apple pulled this feature.  (Source: Mac Rumors)
The rumors of a leaked camera equipped touch prototype appear true

Despite an intense focus on secrecy, Apple products often leak.  The popularity of Apple's mobile devices, coupled with the fact that real leaks exist, has driven some to fabricate iPod and iPhone rumors in a ploy for attention.  It has become hard enough to distinguish from fact and fantasy when it comes to Apple, to the extent that even legitimate leaks seem unbelievable.

That appears to be the case with the reported leak of an iPod Touch third generation prototype with a camera module.  The radio show Covino & Rich first aired the leaked photos.  It now appears these leaked photos were for real.

Comparing them with an iFixit teardown of the newly released third generation Touch, there is ample photographic evidence that the rumor was, in fact, authentic.  The tear down reveals an identical layout, including almost all of the same circuit boards, with one crucial difference -- the release version has no camera.  Both the leaked prototype and the release version differ significantly in circuit board layout to the second generation Touch, further strengthening the argument for the images' validity.

For whatever reason, Apple appears to have late in the development process yanked the camera feature.  While the new nanos received cameras, as predicted, the Touch was left still camera-less.

Rumors continue that Apple will eventually reincorporate a camera into the device.  This certainly seems possible, as the Touch's bigger brother, the iPhone, already supports a camera module.  Until that feature lands on a release Touch, though, expect the rumors and intrigue to continue.

As long as they continue to offer one without the camera but equally as capable hardware, I'll be happy. I don't want a camera on my ipod. I want to be able to use it everywhere i go, not be restricted by federal regulations, etc, which impact any device with a camera on it. It's bad enough so many phones have cameras these days.

"robbed"?
Honestly, how many cameras do people need to carry? Everyone I know has one in their cellphone. I'll take the recent price drop over a feature that is semi-redundant in most of our lives.

Yes, but the iPod touch is itself pretty redundant for most potential buyers. It is, after all, just an iPhone without the phone.

Perhaps people don't want to deal with AT&T's bullcrap and just want a basic phone to make calls and text with and use their iPod Touch for fun. The fact that its been over two years and they still don't have a camera with flash on both the iPod Touch and iPhone is just sad. Not to mention no microSD slot for expansion. These are the basic things a cellphone should have STANDARD and something that should be on the iPod Touch as well.

IMO, they didn't put it on the Touch because they were worried fewer people would get the iPhone. They are realizing that nearly 1/2 of the iPhones out there are hacked to run on another network and if the iPod Touch's functionality becomes as good as the iPhones, fewer people will get it.

No build in micro, no camera. It sounds to me Apple was afraid of the IPod touch becoming IPhone alternative, via VOIP.

How can you be 'robbed' of a feature when it was never present to begin with? When you purchase something, you know what the specs are for that item, it's not like they advertised it with a camera and then never delivered it.

IDK, I don't expect MP3 players to come with a camera. I would expect a phone to come with a camera.... and the iPhone has one. All-be-it it's a POS, but it's got one.

As for redundancy.... well then you shouldn't be buying anything from Apple anymore. People have MP3 players, computers, phones, cameras, etc. An all-in-one device will never trump stand alone device.

Robbed is not the correct word.
But I still don't consider it being fair to the consumer when $250 is a premium device and the ability to put a camera in there was there to begin with.

MMS?

"Back in June Apple announced that it was adding MMS functionality with iPhone 3.0. Even though AT&T couldn’t make it happen until "later in the summer," iPhone owners were very, very happy. However, as the summer months wore on, AT&T couldn't (or wouldn't) specify a date for when it would support the function, despite the fact that most other countries had already rolled it out. Last week AT&T announced that customers using the iPhone would finally get MMS on September 25.

With 11 days left until September 25, several reports this morning indicate that many iPhone owners on AT&T can already send MMS. Are you one of the lucky ones? If so, welcome to 2005. It's all so exciting!

Just as an FYI, PC World reports that iPhone users who say MMS is working for them are typically running iPhone OS 3.1 with carrier file 5.0."

They should have added mms from the start, along with Forward, copy+paste etc. Terrible how marketing makes people a bit blind. Then again, they did get the UI and screen right so you can't take that away from apple.

The MMS debacle is 100% AT&T. This feature has been working just fine overseas with other carriers.

...And has been working just fine, thank you, (even in some countries that you yanks would consider 'third world') for years now.

... the attention given to what the heck Apple's supposed to include in their next generation products. Of course their secrecy on this matter is only a way of gathering attention to their lineup, they don't give a crap if people find out about it - in fact, they want people to know about it. It's all free publicity!

I guess that, if Ford would embrace such tactics, there would be lots of articles floating around showing leaked photos of Pintos with airbags - whith Ford neither confirming nor denying it.

Me? I don't give a damn.

It's a GPS and compass that I really wish they'd added, since I use mine for photo purposes, sun/moon angles and times, etc. But I don't really care to take a photo with it. :-P

It's stupid that the Nano gets one but the more powerful Touch doesn't deserve it. The reason according to Steve Jobs that they did not add a camera is because its a game machine. They sell quite a few games at the App Store. However, most free games, apps and even paid ones are complete crap. You play it once or twice, put it down, never play it again, some people even ask for refunds...They should've made the iPod Touch a tad thicker to include a decent sensor. This was probably the issue, it probably took crappy stills and even crappier video...so they dropped it. Steve has been sick for a while, next year if he survives, we'll hopefully see real complete re-designs for the iPhone, Touch, Classic and Nanos.
